WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program announced today a partnership with Uber that will help the company bring 50,000 veterans, service members, and military spouses onto the Uber platform as partner drivers over the next 18 months. Uber is making its commitment as part of the U.S. Chamber’s Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign. The company will utilize Hiring Our Heroes resources including its job fairs and online programs to help meet the goal.

“A commitment of this scale by one of America’s fastest growing companies sends a powerful message to both the business and military communities,” said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “By pledging to bring on 50,000 veterans and military spouses, Uber is telling them that this is not about charity – this is about finding the strongest candidates in the civilian workforce. We look forward to working with Uber over the next 18 months to connect them with the best talent our country has to offer.”

“Veterans are some of our nation’s most talented and skilled leaders, and Uber has already benefitted from the leadership and reliability veterans bring to our platform,” added Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. “Uber and veterans working together is a win-win, and we are excited to expand their presence throughout our network and bring greater economic opportunity to military communities across the country.”

The Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign launched in March 2012 with a goal of securing commitments from businesses of all sizes to hire half a million veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses by the end of 2014. Uber’s pledge to onboard 50,000 military men and women is one of the largest commitments to date and brings the campaign close to its goal. To date, more than 1,700 companies have committed to hire over 460,000 veterans and military spouses and 275,000 hires have been confirmed.

Uber will work with Hiring Our Heroes through the new UberMILITARY program, which launched in conjunction with today’s announcement to help streamline the onboarding process for the military community. Uber’s recruiting efforts will include free rides to job fairs, special referral bonuses for UberMILITARY partners, waived city fees or deposits, and special information sessions and office hours.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce dedicated to strengthening America’s long-term competitiveness by addressing developments that affect our nation, our economy, and the global business environment.
