Companies in this industry provide scheduled domestic and international passenger transportation, as well as mail and freight transportation. Major US companies include American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, and United Airlines; leading companies based outside the US include AIR FRANCE KLM, China Southern Airlines (China), Emirates Group (Dubai), International Airlines Group (the UK), and Lufthansa Group (Germany).
Since its deregulation in 1978, the U.S. commercial air carrier industry has been characterized by boom-to-bust cycles. The volatility that was associated with these cycles was thought by many to be a structural feature of an industry that was capital intensive but cash poor. However, the great recession of 2007-09 marked a fundamental change in the operations and finances of U.S Airlines. Since the end of the recession in 2009, U.S. airlines revamped their business models to minimize losses by lowering operating costs, eliminating unprofitable routes, and grounding older, less fuel-efficient aircraft. To increase operating revenues, carriers initiated new services that customers were willing to purchase and started charging separately for services that were historically bundled in the price of a ticket. The industry experienced an unprecedented period of consolidation with three major mergers in five years.
As one of the most interconnected industries, it not only ties people and places but also contributes significantly to global economic activity. The sector directly employs millions of people in airlines, airports, and air navigation services, while sustaining further jobs through supply chains, logistics, and tourism.
Last year, the global airline industry was estimated to have generated over one trillion U.S. dollars in revenue, increasing from the previous year and boosting the recovery that began in 2021. The industry's net profit was also estimated to have grown that year, reaching an estimated 45 billion dollars. Europe and North America recorded the highest profits, while Latin America and Africa reported the lowest. Nevertheless, Africa was projected to see the fastest passenger demand growth in 2025, highlighting its long-term potential despite weaker short-term profitability.
American Airlines carried more passengers than any other airline group in 2024, while Delta Air Lines claimed the title of the most valuable airline brand in 2026. Meanwhile, Atlanta retained its position as the world's busiest passenger airport in 2025. On the freight side, air cargo revenue worldwide reached an estimated 151 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, with Hong Kong International remaining the leading cargo airport by volume in 2024.
Despite these positive signs, 2026 is forecast to be a difficult year for the industry. The U.S.-Israel War with Iran has put strain on the oil industry, which in turn has led to the average jet fuel price being forecast to increase by nearly 70 percent in 2026 over the previous year. Duly, fuel costs as a share of total expenditure for airlines worldwide are projected to increase to 31.4 percent in 2026, which would be the highest the figure has been since 2013.
The expansion of Africa’s aviation ecosystem will create growing demand for services and skilled personnel through 2045. Boeing’s Commercial Services Market Outlook forecasts a $140 billion market for maintenance, repair, overhaul and modifications (MRO), digital solutions.
Boeing’s Pilot and Technician Outlook forecasts that as airlines grow their fleets and expand route networks, they will need 75,000 new aviation professionals: 22,000 pilots, 25,000 technicians and 28,000 cabin crew.
Air France KLM
Since May 2004, Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have become the largest European airline group: 1 group, 2 airlines, and 3 businesses.
Together, Air France and KLM carry more than 77 million passengers per year. They operate 548 aircraft, enabling them to fly to 318 destinations in 118 countries. Members of the joint Air France KLM frequent flyer program Flying Blue earn Miles and claim rewards on both airlines ’routes.
Each airline has retained its individual identity, trade name and brand. The 3 core businesses are Passenger Business, Cargo, and Engineering & Maintenance. Both airlines run their own operations from their respective hubs Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam-Schiphol.
Air Taxis
The Air Taxi industry is a rapidly evolving sector, and is influenced by several key considerations.
Understanding regulatory frameworks is crucial, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is establishing guidelines for urban air mobility, including safety standards and certification processes. Challenges such as air traffic management, noise pollution, and public acceptance are significant hurdles that companies must navigate.
There are many Opportunities in urban areas where congestion is driving the demand for alternative transportation methods. Environmental concerns are key, as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft aim to reduce emissions and minimize noise in order to align with sustainability goals.
The competitive landscape is dynamic, with numerous startups and established aviation companies competing for market share. Researching potential players involves examining their technology, partnerships, and funding, as well as their approach to addressing regulatory and operational challenges.
Additionally, the global market relevance of air taxis cannot be overlooked, as many countries are exploring similar innovations, which may lead to international collaborations and competition.
Major companies in the air taxi business include:
Joby Aviation that is actively developing an air taxi service, having received its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate, which enables commercial operations. Their partnership with Delta Air Lines aims to integrate Joby's electric aerial ridesharing into the travel experience, promising to save time and offer a quiet, efficient mode of transport.
Boutique Air, offers premium air travel experiences and charter services, which could be relevant to the concept of 'Air Taxi' by providing stylish and comfortable travel solutions.
Atlas Air is a prominent global provider of aircraft leasing and charter flight services, which could relate to the air taxi concept through its expertise in efficient transport solutions. With a diverse fleet and a focus on maximizing service benefits, Atlas Air is well-positioned in the aviation operating services sector.
Bristow Group Inc. is focused on Advanced Air Mobility, highlighting their commitment to safety and innovative technology in their fleet of approximately 220 aircraft, which includes both small and large helicopters.
Other Air taxi companies include: Wisk Aero , Havens Aero, Tax-Air, Airshare, VistaJet
Booking Sites
Airline booking sites have mostly replaced the role of travel agencies across the world. These booking sites provide a way for travelers to compare ticket values and deals offered by various airlines. Notable among these sites include:

Some of these sites offer package deals that include hotel accommodation and car rentals…
Our take here at Cibunet is that the outlook of the aviation industry is very positive. The current challenge of high fuel prices presents an opportunity to develop electric powered aircraft. Low-capacity aircrafts usually engaged in regional flights would be the first group of aircrafts to transition into electric… Subsequently as battery powered engines attain longer range, more aircrafts of higher capacity would transition from fossil fuels…
Air taxis are an alternative that overcomes the high traffic congestion of major cities across the world. Though helicopters are in use in certain cities, the noise and pollution levels have made them unpopular in certain cities. Efficiency standards for air taxis would require a lot of collaboration…
