Microsoft, Intel and the Kenya Private School Alliance announce 4Afrika Youth Device Program
NAIROBI, Kenya — Microsoft Corp., in association with Intel Corporation East Africa and the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA), on Monday announced the launch of the 4Afrika Youth Device Program to provide a bundle of affordable devices, educational applications, online services, affordable data plans and smart financing to Kenyan learning institutions. This will deliver an immersive learning experience to institutions of primary, secondary and higher education at an affordable rate.
The 4Afrika Youth Device initiative is part of the Microsoft 4Afrika Youth Program, which was unveiled earlier this year to provide scholarships, fellowships and internship opportunities to thousands of African youth. The device program will be piloted in Kenya with plans to expand to the rest of Africa including South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. It aims to promote digital inclusion among Africa’s youth and educators across the continent, providing them with affordable access to the latest devices and services on the Microsoft platform coupled with popular learning applications.
“Through the program’s pilot in Kenya, we want to equip youth with critical 21st century ICT skills that will contribute to the growth of Kenya’s knowledge economy and facilitate the use of e-government services,” said Patrick Onwumere, director of youth enablement for Microsoft 4Afrika. The devices on offer include Windows-powered smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs. “The biggest value the Microsoft platform brings is our ability to offer a wide range of devices that deliver a connected experience across platforms and the services we provide,” said Onwumere.
Microsoft under the 4Afrika initiative is currently piloting three TV white spaces projects on the continent to deliver low-cost, high-speed, broadband Internet access to schools in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa.
Microsoft has also partnered with Intel to offer training for teachers on information and communications technology (ICT) integration via the Intel Teach curriculum and Microsoft’s Teaching With Technology course, which leads to the Microsoft Certified Educator certification. “Our goal is not only to offer a range of affordable devices with educational applications and online services, but to deliver experiences that students and educators love through strategic cost of ownership and training and support for the education partner ecosystem,” said Onwumere.
“At Intel, we believe the right technology can be transformative, driving student achievement and lifelong learning. That’s why we are focused on designing tools that bring learning to life, helping to make students more engaged. The devices under the program are part of the flexible, holistic Intel Education Solutions that includes a range of devices from tablets to laptops to two-in-ones, software, content services and professional development for teachers. We are committed to working closely with the Kenya Private Schools Association to promote digital education for the 21st century,” said Alex Twinomugisha, business manager, Intel Corporation East Africa.
“These devices based on Intel Architecture are purpose-built for education, are student-friendly rugged designs that can withstand dropping off a desk (from 70 cm), and provide water resistance and dust resistance to promote anytime, anywhere learning. The devices all come with Intel Education Software, a suite of eLearning tools including the newly launched Intel Explore and Learn, designed to promote deeper engagement with content, plus apps that enable science exploration, data analysis and promote creativity. These devices are available from a number of manufacturers and will be distributed locally by Mitsumi Distribution, one of Africa’s largest ICT distributors,” added Twinomugisha.
The 4Afrika Youth Device bundle also includes tailored data offerings from Safaricom, consisting of 5 gigabyte and 10 gigabyte packages for PCs and laptops. Financing will be available through Kenyan institutions in a variety of formats, including bank loans from Equity Bank and contributions through M-Changa, a mobile money-based way to contribute toward the purchase of the devices.
“We would like to thank our partners Microsoft, Intel, M-Changa, Equity and Safaricom, who have come together to help us supplement the government’s efforts in providing quality and affordable devices for use in e-learning,” said Peter Ndoro, CEO of KPSA. “The choice of Microsoft applications, including the latest and most security-enhanced versions of Windows 8.1 and Office 365, and content from Intel and other parties, will go a long way in providing a wholesome, quality education to our students. Kenya Private Schools Association is committed to integrate ICT in our schools with an aim of providing quality, holistic basic education.”

RadioShack Plans To Close Up To 1,100 Underperforming Stores In The U.S.
FORT WORTH, Texas,- RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) today reported results for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2013. Joseph C. Magnacca, chief executive officer, said, “Our fourth quarter financial results were driven by a holiday season characterized by lower store traffic, intense promotional activity particularly in consumer electronics, a very soft mobility marketplace and a few operational issues. Even in this environment, we’re continuing to make progress on the five pillars of our turnaround plan: repositioning the brand, revamping the product assortment, reinvigorating the stores, operational efficiency and financial flexibility.
“Our brand equity remains strong, reflected in the sales growth we’re seeing in our new Concept Stores which redefine the RadioShack store experience,” Mr. Magnacca added. “We have also been encouraged by the positive response to our new brand positioning around “Do It Together,” which we kicked off with our award winning Super Bowl commercial. Importantly, our key hires during the fourth quarter in merchandising, global sourcing, planning and allocation and, more recently, our new chief financial officer, round out our new leadership team as we continue to re-build the business.”
Mr. Magnacca continued, “Our focus on the brand, our operations, and the in-store experience has been unfolding in parallel with a strategic review of our store footprint. Over the past few months, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our portfolio from many angles – location, area demographics, lease life and financial performance – in order to consolidate our store base into fewer locations while maintaining a strong presence in each market. The result of that review is our plan to close up to 1,100 underperforming stores. We will continue to have a strong, unmatched presence across the U.S. with over 4,000 stores including over 900 dealer franchise locations.
“Without minimizing the challenges ahead, we have a detailed strategic path to profitability based upon the five pillars of our turnaround,” Mr. Magnacca concluded. “Our entire team is focused on execution as we work to improve our performance in the coming year.”
Note: All comparisons are versus the same period of the prior fiscal year unless otherwise noted.

It will also allow the management team to more efficiently track and measure the Company’s performance during the year.
As a result of this change, the Company will have a stub period between January 1, 2014, and February 1, 2014, that will be identified as Fiscal Year 2014 which will be reported separately in the Form 10-Q for the first quarter of Fiscal 2015. Samsung and Akamai Showcase Advanced Content Delivery Solutions for Mobile Networks
BARCELONA, Spain – At Mobile World Congress 2014, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a leading provider of mobile broadband network solutions, and Akamai Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications, will demonstrate advanced content delivery technologies for use in mobile networks. The ”proof of concept” demonstration is intended to highlight expected benefits to both end-users and mobile operators including improved user experience, faster mobile web access and more efficient delivery of web page contents over mobile networks.
Today’s mobile web content has become more complicated and heavier due to the inclusion of higher resolution images and videos. A rapid increase in media traffic demand from smart devices carries an associated cost of network congestion, which leads to unforeseen bottlenecks and lower quality of service to end-users. In this challenging environment, mobile operators are demanding better ways to deliver content over their networks in order to improve user experience.
To cater to the needs of mobile operators, at this year’s congress, Samsung will perform a demonstration of advanced content delivery solutions on its mobile network. Developed in coordination with Akamai, the demonstration will highlight how mobile content delivery technology can result in significant improvement in web page loading time, even in a heavily congested network environment.
Samsung’s demonstration will also highlight mobile traffic prioritization. This approach allows mobile operators to prioritize delivery of the premium contents over their network. For example mobile operators can serve faster and more stable web page access to subscribers that use critical services like mobile banking or e-commerce.
Additionally, combining the mobile traffic prioritization technology with Samsung’s unique mobile caching solution called Smart CacheTM, further enhancement can be made in end-user service quality by reducing the usage of network bandwidth and minimizing network latency by up to 100%. This will also allow mobile service providers the ability to offer premium services to content providers and an SLA (Service Level Agreement) for their services.
“Mobile operators are witnessing rapid growth in mobile web activities such as mobile banking and e-commerce. Mobile content delivery solutions and traffic prioritization over the mobile network will develop into a key differentiator for mobile operators in smart device era.” said Jungah Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of System Innovation Lab at Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. “Recently, Samsung is focusing on developing innovative solutions for mobile content delivery such as Smart CacheTM and mobile delivery acceleration technologies. Our solutions will not only provide superior mobile user experience by minimizing network latency, but will also open up possibilities for a variety of new business opportunities between the mobile operators and the content providers.”

Unilever and Internet.org Partner On Internet Study For Communities Across India
Today, Unilever announced a partnership with Internet.org, a Facebook-led alliance of partners, to understand better how internet access can be increased to reach millions more people across rural India.
Just 13 per cent of the Indian population has internet access and as an initial step, Internet.org and Unilever will carry out a comprehensive study to examine the opportunities to increase internet adoption in rural communities. Apart from infrastructure and cost which are known barriers to connectivity, the partnership will carefully evaluate other educational and cultural factors that also limit internet use.
The mission of Internet.org is to bring the benefits of internet access to all and by leveraging Unilever’s vast expertise on the ground via a comprehensive research and activation programme, the partnership aims to better understand the barriers to connectivity in rural communities. Unilever and Internet.org will leverage this research to inform the development of a series of on-the-ground projects with the aim of improving lives in rural India through better connectivity.
Unilever has extensive experience developing and deploying programmes for rural consumers. For example, Lifebuoy, the world’s leading health soap, has been promoting handwashing awareness in rural India for several years and has successfully enabled women in remote communities to enhance their incomes through the Shakti ( 526KB ) project.
Lowering the barriers to internet access requires a collaborative effort. Through this partnership, Unilever and Internet.org are pursuing the mission of bringing the benefits of internet access to the two-thirds of the world who are not yet connected.
Keith Weed, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Unilever:
“Access to the internet is improving in countries like India but there is still a very high proportion of people that would love the opportunity to connect and engage but who cannot enjoy what many of us take for granted. Having no internet access naturally removes all associated opportunities that it brings which, in turn, can be a barrier to learning and ultimately hinder economic development. Through our long history of serving the Indian market we bring an in-depth understanding of rural Indian communities. We hope, together with Internet.org, we can use this know-how to understand better how a vital modern resource can benefit many more millions.”
Chris Weasler, Director of Global Connectivity, Facebook:
“The internet not only connects us to our friends, families and communities, but it’s also the foundation of the global knowledge economy and a way to deliver basic financial services, health and educational tools. In partnership with Unilever, we hope to break down the barriers to access and, in turn, provide millions of people with the information that can help them, and their communities, thrive.”
About Internet.org:
Internet.org is a global partnership between technology leaders, nonprofits, local communities and experts who are working together to bring the internet to the two thirds of the world’s population not yet connected. Founding members include Ericsson, Facebook, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Samsung and Qualcomm.

Global Multinationals Invest in BlackBerry Enterprise Mobility Solutions
Mobile World Congress 2014, Barcelona – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a world leader in mobile communications, today announced that Daimler AG and Airbus Group are among the latest multinational customers to adopt BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10 (BES10) and BlackBerry® 10 smartphones.
BlackBerry’s container offering delivers a best-in-class COPE (Corporate Owned Personally Enabled) management solution with BES10. Learn how Gartner views COPE offerings in the following report.
BlackBerry secures mobile communication for more than 80,000 enterprises. Enterprises choose BlackBerry for its behind the firewall protection. BlackBerry’s end-to-end, gold standard security capabilities help customers to rest assured that their mission critical data is safeguarded across every mobile device on the network.
Daimler AG, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, relies on BlackBerry 10 smartphones for employees with increased security requirements. “BES10 in combination with BlackBerry 10 smartphones offers us the safest environment for mobile device management,” said the automobile manufacturer’s CIO Dr. Michael Gorriz. “With BlackBerry Balance technology, we also offer our employees the opportunity to use two profiles on one device – a professional and a private one. While the professional site is controlled and protected by IT, the user receives individual user options in the private section. With this, private services and apps can be used without compromising company data.”
Airbus Group, a global pioneer in Aeronautics, Space and Defense-related Service, also chose BES10 and is upgrading its entire BlackBerry mobile fleet to BlackBerry 10 smartphones. This decision by Airbus was made after several months of testing and comparison with other offerings on the market. Airbus’ vigorous testing was conducted to ensure that their high standards and requirements for security, confidentiality, and Mobile Device Management capabilities were met by BlackBerry 10.
“Our customers recognize the value that BlackBerry 10 solutions bring to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile workforce and the sensitive nature of data shared across terminals and platforms – requiring the best end-to-end security technology,” added John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Services at BlackBerry. “Companies like Daimler AG and Airbus Group, as do all of our enterprise and government customers, need to share and access confidential information on a daily basis, making smartphone security a key priority. With BES10, security, productivity, communication and collaboration are the pillars for what BlackBerry aims to deliver to its customers.”
Today at Mobile World Congress, BlackBerry also announced a new promotional program for BlackBerry’s enterprise mobility platform that allows certain customers to deploy BES10 at no cost. Visit www.blackberry.com/ezpass and www.blackberry.com/pricingupdate for conditions and pricing information.
Additional customers include:
AirDolomiti, an Italian Airline with approximately 550 employees, has deployed BES10 and has migrated their existing BlackBerry smartphones to new BlackBerry 10 smartphones. “As an international airline, we need to provide our employees the most efficient, secure and cost effective communication tools. BES10 allows us to maintain our high standards of efficient, secure, real-time, international collaboration,” said Fabio Biancotto, ICT Director AirDolomiti.
Banca Ifigest, an independent bank, based in Florence, Italy, needed an EMM solution to manage its mixed mobile environment. “BES10 enables us to securely, simply and effectively manage our BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices from a single user-friendly graphical interface. A multi-platform solution is exactly what we needed and BlackBerry offers this with high security standards across personal devices in our BYOD environment,” said Daniele Grassi, IT Manager, Banca Ifigest.
Tokheim is one of the world’s largest providers of fuel retailing solutions. “Our data has always been secure thanks to BlackBerry, and we appreciate the single platform provided by BES10 to facilitate the management and control of BlackBerry and other devices,” said Corrado Fasano, Manager, Tokheim. “In addition, with the added bonus of BlackBerry Balance technology on BlackBerry 10 smartphones, and support for iOS and Android devices with BlackBerry’s Secure Work Space, our employees can enjoy all the benefits of a cutting-edge smartphone while we can rest assured that all corporate information is kept completely separate and secure from personal content.”
Vepica, a global industry leader with more than 40 years of experience in designing and developing construction projects uses BES10 to manage BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices. “The accelerated growth we’re experiencing as a company demands that we adopt a solution like BES10, which provides us with secure remote access to the different services and features of our business systems. At the same time, the platform increases productivity and continuous, real-time communications among our workforce,” says Marianela Gil, VP of Information Technology at Vepica. “One of the main reasons we chose the BlackBerry solution is that it gives us the flexibility to manage devices on multiple platforms, effectively and securely. Additionally, our corporate BYOD policy required the flexibility of the BES10 solution, which we viewed as a decisive value add,” explained Marianela.
PDVSA, the leading Venezuelan oil company in Latin America, chose BES10 to manage their BlackBerry devices and ensure compliance with their BYOD corporate policy. “At PDVSA, we work to maintain a high level of security and operating resilience to reach key objectives in Venezuela, aligned with our strategy for the country. This is why we need an EMM platform capable of offering excellent security, and that’s BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10,” said Keith Fernandez, who’s in charge of Information Assets Security at PDVSA, which falls under the Corporate Management Office of Loss Prevention and Control. “We’re very pleased with the security and flexibility that BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 offers for our devices, and having features included in them that enable our mobile workforce to be more productive, it’s really an easy decision to have chosen this solution.”
Odebrecht, a Brazilian organization with global presence, and a leader in the engineering, construction, chemical and petrochemical industry in Latin America chose BlackBerry solutions for its security. “BlackBerry 10 smartphones and BES10 provide the security and reliability we need for our daily operations,” said Odebrecht’s CIO Andre Schneiter. “In addition, BlackBerry Balance technology offers great flexibility and privacy to our executives, which was also a decisive factor.”

FREMONT, Calif.- SYNNEX Corporation (NYSE: SNX), a leading business process services company, today announced the completion of the initial close of the acquisition of IBM’s customer relationship management (CRM) business on January 31, 2014. IBM’s CRM business will be combined with Concentrix, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SYNNEX, to become one of the world’s foremost customer engagement services companies in the $55 billion+ CRM BPO market.
The Company also announced that Christopher Caldwell has been promoted to Executive Vice-President and President of Concentrix Corporation, and will lead the combined organization. “This transformational acquisition makes Concentrix a global Top 10 player in a growing market,” stated Kevin Murai, President and CEO of SYNNEX Corporation. “Our collective strengths in the CRM BPO market including a strong team of executives and recurring revenues from IBM’s blue-chip client base have created a truly compelling value proposition for our shareholders.”
Concentrix is now a global leader in customer engagement, technology and process innovation, due to the combined scale, tools and industry expertise of IBM and the agility, flexibility, velocity and client focus of Concentrix. Through this acquisition, as well as the ongoing, long-term strategic partnership with IBM as preferred provider for CRM solutions for their clients, Concentrix will provide organizations with the innovative solutions and customer engagement capabilities to differentiate their brand and services from those of their competitors.
“Enabling our clients’ customer strategy and supporting transactions with operational excellence has always been the foundation of our success. This acquisition continues to extend our portfolio, delivery capabilities and geographic reach to help organizations around the world deliver innovative, high-value interactions at every stage of the customer engagement lifecycle” said Chris Caldwell, President, Concentrix Corporation. “Upon final closing, Concentrix will provide customer engagement and industry process services for clients in 10 industry verticals with an expanded global footprint of more than 43,000 staff in over 36 countries.”
Estimated Financial Impact of Acquisition to Consolidated SYNNEX Corporation Financials:
Approximately $120 million of EBITDA weighted towards the latter part of the first 12 months following the initial close due to a higher cost structure in the near term as the business moves from IBM to Concentrix. The amount excludes one-time acquisition related expenses and restructuring charges.
One-time acquisition-related expenses – primarily professional fees and transaction-related expenses -are estimated at $35-45 million for the fiscal year end November 30, 2014.
Amortization expense is estimated to be $40 million for fiscal 2014.
Depreciation expense is estimated to be $15 million for fiscal 2014.
As part of the $505 million purchase price, SYNNEX has delivered approximately 1.27 million shares of SYNNEX common stock valued at $75 million to IBM.
Interest expense related to the financing of the initial $355 million cash purchase price and working capital needs will approximate $8-10 million for the balance of fiscal year 2014. $75 million of the purchase price payment is deferred until subsequent closings are completed.
Total revenues from the IBM CRM business will be dependent on the timing of successive closings, the timing of novation of customer contracts, and the fact that some contracts will be conducted under sub-contract from IBM. We expect, however, that successive closings and novation will occur within the next 12 months. Updated U.S. GAAP revenue projections from this transaction will be provided during the Company’s first quarter 2014 earnings release and in subsequent quarters.
Excluding one-time acquisition related charges, the one month impact of the IBM CRM business will not be material to SYNNEX’ fiscal first quarter results for the period ended February 28, 2014.
“We are excited about the client base coming over from IBM. After the initial integration and planned expiration of certain lower margin contracts, we expect to grow revenue and earnings for the combined business,” stated Kevin Murai, President and CEO of SYNNEX Corporation. “We have long been committed to delivering high quality, innovative services and this acquisition will significantly extend our portfolio and our delivery capabilities.”

Majority of Organizations That Accept Payment Cards Fail to Maintain PCI Security Standards
NEW YORK – A new Verizon report has found that too many businesses, following their annual assessment for meeting the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, fail to maintain ongoing compliance – putting the businesses at an increased risk for data breaches, and financial and reputational damages.
The “Verizon 2014 PCI Compliance Report” affirms that payment card transactions remain a prime target for attackers, and the rate at which data breaches are occurring appears to be increasing. It is estimated by The Nilson Report that global credit cards fraud exceeded $11 billion in 2012 alone.
According to the report, in most cases, payment card data breaches are not a failure of security technology or of compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, but rather a failure to implement appropriate compliance and security measures as intended.
“We continue to see many organizations viewing PCI compliance as a single annual event, unaware that compliance needs to have a 365 day-a-year focus,” stated Rodolphe Simonetti, managing director, PCI practice, Verizon Enterprise Solutions.
However, there is a bright spot in the report: Organizations’ initial compliance with the PCI standard has shown some improvement. In 2013, more than 82 percent of organizations were compliant with at least 80 percent of the PCI standard at the time of their annual baseline assessment, compared with just 32 percent in 2012.
There were also regional differences due to breach notification laws, varying legal requirements and levels of adoption. The Asia-Pacific region took the top spot (75 percent), followed by the U.S. with 56 percent and Europe with 31 percent in meeting at least 80 percent of the PCI requirements.
Areas where businesses struggle the most in achieving initial compliance include: security testing (23.8 percent); security monitoring and the ability to effectively detect and respond to data compromised (17 percent); and protecting stored sensitive data (55.6 percent).
“Anything less than 100 percent compliance is an issue for businesses today,” said Simonetti. “We have seen time and time again that noncompliance leaves an organization open to credit card theft, which can potentially cost hundreds of millions of dollars when you factor in all the damages, not to mention lost consumer trust and the impact on brand reputation. Organizations need to rethink how they factor in maintaining a PCI-compliant environment, whether it’s devoting more resources or working with a managed security services provider.”
Report Takes In-Depth Look at Each of 12 PCI Requirements
In addition the report examines in detail how well organizations comply with each of the 12 specific PCI requirements; provides recommendations that organizations can implement to help them earn and maintain compliance; and explains how noncompliance with each requirement can lead to a data breach.
Simonetti points out that “compliance activities should be planned; integrated with largest organizationalwide governance, security and compliance initiatives; and automated as much as possible to help ensure compliance is sustainable and cost effective.”
PCI Report Findings Based on Actual PCI Assessments
The report is based on findings from hundreds of PCI DSS assessments conducted by Verizon’s team of PCI Qualified Security Assessors, from 2011 through 2013. Like Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) series, the PCI Compliance Report is based on actual casework and is believed to be the only report of its kind in the industry. This report analyzes PCI Data Security assessment data, with a specific focus on the retail, financial services and hospitality industries across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Broadcom Delivers First Global Location Chip for Wearables
Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced the industry’s first Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) system-on-chip (SoC), designed for low-power, mass-market wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smart watches. Broadcom will showcase its mobile innovations at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 24-27. For more news, visit Broadcom’s Newsroom.
The Broadcom® BCM4771 GNSS SoC with on-chip sensor hub enables consumers to more accurately track and manage their health and wellbeing by delivering precision activity tracking and location data while consuming less power than traditional architectures. This enables location intelligence and the extended battery life needed by the growing wearable market. Wearable wireless device revenues are projected to exceed $6 billion in 2018 with sports, fitness and wellness as the largest segment with 50 percent share of all device shipments1.
“Today’s wearables like fitness trackers have surged in popularity, but often miscalculate speed and distance,” said Mohamed Awad, Broadcom Director, Marketing, Mobile and Wireless Group. “As the largest supplier of discrete GNSS solutions, Broadcom brings its location expertise to deliver more precise fitness and health measurements to the accelerating wearable market.”
Broadcom’s new chip constantly monitors user activity levels and location history to improve accuracy while adding advanced features such as location batching. In addition, Broadcom’s BCM4771 significantly reduces power consumption and board area by combining its location capabilities with an integrated sensor hub, contextual awareness, and GNSS. The solution is complimented by Broadcom’s Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED™) Smart and WICED Direct software development kits (SDKs) to provide additional wireless connectivity to the platform.
Key Features
Designed in 40 nanometer (nm) process technology, Broadcom’s BCM4771 GNSS SoC includes a sensor hub that integrates sensor inputs for its on-chip algorithms to detect the user’s context, accurately compute speed and distance traveled, and provide fitness applications with the GNSS track. Power savings and advanced accuracy are achieved by intelligently leveraging context detection through the tight coupling of sensor inputs and GNSS on a single SoC. Broadcom’s BCM4771 also realizes a lower overall bill of materials (BOM) cost through the integration of a multipurpose sensor hub.
Availability
The BCM4771 will be sampling by the end of Q1 2014.

Facebook Has Acquired WhatsApp
MENLO PARK, CALIF. – Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire WhatsApp, a rapidly growing cross-platform mobile messaging company, for a total of approximately $16 billion, including $4 billion in cash and approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares. The agreement also provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp’s founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing.
WhatsApp has built a leading and rapidly growing real-time mobile messaging service, with:
Over 450 million people using the service each month;
70% of those people active on a given day;
Messaging volume approaching the entire global telecom SMS volume; and
Continued strong growth, currently adding more than 1 million new registered users per day.
The acquisition supports Facebook and WhatsApp’s shared mission to bring more connectivity and utility to the world by delivering core internet services efficiently and affordably. The combination will help accelerate growth and user engagement across both companies.
“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO. “I’ve known Jan for a long time and I’m excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected.”
Jan Koum, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO, said, “WhatsApp’s extremely high user engagement and rapid growth are driven by the simple, powerful and instantaneous messaging capabilities we provide. We’re excited and honored to partner with Mark and Facebook as we continue to bring our product to more people around the world.”
Facebook fosters an environment where independent-minded entrepreneurs can build companies, set their own direction and focus on growth while also benefiting from Facebook’s expertise, resources and scale. This approach is working well with Instagram, and WhatsApp will operate in this manner. WhatsApp’s brand will be maintained; its headquarters will remain in Mountain View, CA; Jan Koum will join Facebook’s Board of Directors; and WhatsApp’s core messaging product and Facebook’s existing Messenger app will continue to operate as standalone applications.
Upon closing of the deal, all outstanding shares of WhatsApp capital stock and options to purchase WhatsApp capital stock will be cancelled in exchange for $4 billion in cash and 183,865,778 shares of Facebook Class A common stock (worth $12 billion based on the average closing price of the six trading days preceding February 18, 2014 of $65.2650 per share). In addition, upon closing, Facebook will grant 45,966,444 restricted stock units to WhatsApp employees (worth $3 billion based on the average closing price of the six trading days preceding February 18, 2014 of $65.2650 per share). The Class A common stock and RSUs issued to WhatsApp shareholders and employees upon closing will represent 7.9% of Facebook shares based on current shares and RSUs outstanding.
In the event of termination of the Merger Agreement under certain circumstances principally related to a failure to obtain required regulatory approvals, the Merger Agreement provides for Facebook to pay WhatsApp a fee of $1 billion in cash and to issue to WhatsApp a number of shares of Facebook’s Class A common stock equal to $1 billion based on the average closing price of the ten trading days preceding such termination date.
Facebook was advised by Allen & Company LLC and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP; and WhatsApp was advised by Morgan Stanley and Fenwick & West, LLP.

With a national network of more than 52 sites and 2,500 vehicles, UK Mail needed a mobile strategy to help embrace new technologies, provide a platform for growth, enhance the customer experience within their sector and to enable them to drive business innovation. Motorola’s Mobility Lifecycle Management (MLM) service has allowed UK Mail to lower costs by keeping mobile devices up to date and available to its workforce, allowing employees to concentrate on the needs of their customers.
MLM helps ensure the successful introduction of mobile device technologies across an enterprise by speeding rollout and providing operational support for mobile device and application planning. The postal courier and delivery industry is typically a very harsh environment for mobile devices with high repair and return rates. UK Mail introduced MLM and immediately saw dramatic results. Scanning rates from depots in the first roll-out phase hit 100 percent and across the business the scanning rate has risen to 96 percent. The enhanced customer visibility regarding packages is also leading to a decrease in calls to UK Mail’s customer support center. When a device does require repair, UK Mail has elected to use Motorola‘s Fast Track support service program which provides a “ready for business” replacement unit the following business day.
Click here to see a new video from Motorola Solutions that illustrates how UK Mail is using and benefiting from the Mobility Lifecycle Management solution.

Ideum and 3M Collaborate to Enable High-Performance Android OS for 3M Multi-Touch Displays
LAS VEGAS–As Android development continues to surge in popularity and the expectations for multi-touch interactivity becomes the norm for commercial applications, developing a high-performance Android OS solution for large-format, multi-touch devices, such as touch tables, kiosks and wall displays, has become increasingly important. Now, thanks to the collective effort of Ideum and 3M engineers, Android developers in key markets, such as gaming and entertainment, retail, trade shows, museum exhibits, and corporate environments, can create large-format, multi-user Android applications that utilize 3M’s multi-touch technology (up to 60 simultaneous touches) incorporated into Ideum’s line of table and kiosk products.
The first example of this high-performance Android OS will be exhibited on Ideum’s popular Platform 46 Coffee Table (www.ideum.com/coffee-tables), which will preview a wide variety of multi-touch Android applications in the 3M booth (#1600) at the Digital Signage Expo (DSE) 2014, February 12-13, Las Vegas. This table will run Android Version 4.1 (Jellybean) on Intel’s x86 architecture and will be available for purchase from Ideum later this year. Additional Android offerings from Ideum are planned throughout the year, including dual-boot Android and Windows 8 systems.
“We think developers will be excited about the ease of authoring on the popular Android platform and the amazingly fast performance on our tables,” says Jim Spadaccini, CEO, Ideum. “Native Android OS support expands the possibilities for our multi-touch tables giving developers new options and providing end customers new and dynamic software solutions.”
“High-performance multi-touch Android applications are key in expanding the reach of 3M multi-touch systems and displays,” says Diego Romeu, Global Business Unit Manager, 3M Electronic Solutions Division. “And we are thrilled to work with Ideum’s engineering team to help bring Android applications to their multi-touch enabled tables.”
Ideum Platform 46 Tables combine Ideum’s innovative design and build-quality with 3M’s high-performance, multi-user 46-inch 3M Multi-Touch Display C4667PW display to create a rugged turnkey touch table with ultra-fast touch response time for fluid multi-touch interaction. The table’s 3M multi-touch display has a bezel-free, full HD 1080p LCD with a chemically-strengthened glass surface and IP54 waterproof rating. The table’s pedestal is constructed with high-grade aluminum.
Ideum Platform 46 Tables perform in virtually any lighting environment since 3M projected capacitive technology – the same touch technology found in popular tablets and smart phones – is inherently unaffected by ambient light.
With its exceptional build-quality and easy-to-start “push of a button,” the Ideum Platform 46 Tables are ideal for public spaces and other heavy-use environments. A small form-factor PC is inside the chassis, allowing for easy upgrades and comes equipped with an Intel i7 3.7GHz Hyper-threaded Quad Core Processor with 16GB of RAM and a 500GB Hard Drive (specific to Coffee Table model).

Target Announces $5 Million Investment in New Cybersecurity Coalition
The recent Target data breach has fueled conversations about high-level cybercrime and phishing scams. It’s a field that, unfortunately, is only likely to continue to evolve as technology and cybercriminals become more sophisticated.
Today, in an open letter published in newspapers across the country, Target Chairman, President and CEO, Gregg Steinhafel announced a new coalition to help educate the public on the dangers of these scams. Target is now able to share some additional details.
A group of nationally recognized, respected organizations in cybersecurity and consumer protection will launch a campaign to accelerate the dialogue around cybersecurity threats and the dangers of consumer phishing scams. Target will invest $5 million in a multi-year campaign for this effort.
“Target has a longstanding history of commitment to our communities, and cybersecurity is one of the most pressing issues facing consumers today,” said Steinhafel. “We are proud to be working with three trusted organizations — the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA), National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Better Business Bureau (BBB)—to advance public education around cybersecurity.”
Target will learn from the experts at these organizations who best understand the complexities and growing challenges associated with cybersecurity—particularly phishing scams— and how to educate consumers in trusted, accessible and understandable ways.
“Cybersecurity is fast becoming one of the biggest marketplace challenges for businesses, and a huge concern for their customers,” said Mary E. Power, CAE, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.
Effectively addressing such digital crimes and concerns demands a new and collective response, said Maria Vello, CEO, NCFTA. “Organizations from the public and private sectors must come together.”
Michael Kaiser, executive director of the NCSA, echoed her sentiment: “We believe that cybersecurity and online safety can only be achieved through sharing the responsibility and working together. This effort exemplifies that approach.”
The coalition will convene for the first time later this week in Washington, D.C., and we’ll share more following the inaugural meeting.
