AT&T Introduces First-Ever Nationwide TV and Wireless Combined Offer
DALLAS, Aug. 3, 2015 – AT&T will deliver the first-ever nationwide package of TV and wireless services – all from a single provider on one bill, with special discounts – beginning Aug. 10. The offer includes HD and DVR service for up to four TV receivers, unlimited talk and text for four wireless lines, and 10GB of shareable wireless data – all for $200* per month, an annual savings of $600 or more in the first 12 months.
AT&T is the only single provider that can deliver nationwide TV and wireless services with one point of contact for customer care on a single monthly bill.
“Today is the first of many planned moves to enable our customers to enjoy a premium entertainment experience almost anywhere,” said Brad Bentley, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, AT&T Entertainment and Internet Services. “We’re going to deliver more TV and entertainment choices to more screens – when and where our customers want it. And we’ll offer incredible value with more flexibility and convenience through our integrated packages that deliver a great experience.”
As part of this launch on Aug. 10, and for the first time nationwide, new DIRECTV subscribers will have immediate access to programming – on their mobile devices via a walk out and watch TV experience – at point of sale. They can view it on their compatible mobile devices after leaving the store before TV service is installed. The walk out and watch feature will be delivered through the DIRECTV app and customers will have a limited time to activate their mobile TV service. AT&T sales representatives will assist customers to set up the app on their wireless device in the store.
AT&T is now selling DIRECTV in more than 2,000 AT&T retail stores nationwide – integration built around customer convenience and simplification.
“AT&T is wasting no time extending the benefits of its DIRECTV acquisition to consumers,” said Roger Entner, founder, Recon Analytics LLC. “With this newly integrated offer, it’s clear AT&T is focused on offering value on top of convenience to win new customers and become a leader in entertainment and communications.
“All in One”: It’s Simple
With the new All in One plans, consumers can choose from a variety of DIRECTV plans available nationwide, or several AT&T U-verse TV plans, available in 21 states.
TV packages available for 12-month promotional pricing include:
DIRECTV Select or U-verse U-Family, $50 per month
DIRECTV Xtra or U-verse U-200, $70
DIRECTV Ultimate or U-verse U-300, $75
DIRECTV Premiere or U-verse U-450, $125
Customers may add AT&T’s coast-to-coast wireless services, with 10GB of shareable data and unlimited talk and text for four phone lines for $160 per month. When combined on a single AT&T bill with the basic TV plan for $50 (DIRECTV Select or U-verse U-Family), with service on up to four TVs, consumers will pay $200 per month for the All-in-One plan after a $10 a month combined bill discount.
Customers who combine TV services with eligible AT&T wireless services on a single monthly AT&T bill are eligible for the $10 combined bill discount. The discount will continue if the customer keeps both services on a combined bill – an annual savings of $120.
Additionally, DIRECTV and U-Verse TV customers who switch to AT&T wireless service from another wireless provider will receive a $300 bill credit when they buy a smartphone on AT&T Next and trade in an eligible smartphone.**
“All Included” Covers Costs and Brings in High-Speed Internet Options
As part of this launch, AT&T also is introducing a customer friendly “All-Included” pricing model with DIRECTV and U-verse TV packages. “All-Included” pricing plans start as low as $50 per month for TV programming and include up to four receivers, DVR functionality and HD technology fees for the first 12 months.
In addition to the $200 per month TV and wireless combined plan, where available, customers also can add AT&T high-speed Internet services “All-Included” plans. Facebook Releases New Milestones in Internet Access Connectivity Lab’s Aircraft and Laser Programs

Since we launched Internet.org, it’s been our mission to find ways to provide internet connectivity to the more than 4 billion people who are not yet online. Many of these people live within range of at least a 3G wireless signal, and our work in the last year with mobile operators across 17 countries has provided more than a billion people with access to relevant basic internet services. But 10 percent of the world’s population lives in remote locations with no internet infrastructure, and the kinds of infrastructure technologies used everywhere else — things like fiber-optic cable, microwave repeaters and cell towers — may be a challenge to deploy cost-effectively in these regions.
That’s where the Connectivity Lab comes in. Our goal is to accelerate the development of a new set of technologies that can drastically change the economics of deploying internet infrastructure. We are exploring a number of different approaches to this challenge, including aircraft, satellites and terrestrial solutions. Our intention is not to build networks and then operate them ourselves, but rather to quickly advance the state of these technologies to the point that they become viable solutions for operators and other partners to deploy.
Today our Connectivity Lab team announced two major milestones in this work:
A full-scale version of Aquila — the high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft designed by our aerospace team in the UK — is now complete and ready for flight testing. Aquila has the wingspan of a 737 but weighs hundreds of times less, thanks to its unique design and carbon-fiber frame. When deployed, it will be able to circle a remote region for up to 90 days, beaming connectivity down to people from an altitude of 60,000 to 90,000 feet.
Our laser communications team in Woodland Hills, California, has achieved a significant performance breakthrough. They’ve designed and lab-tested a laser that can deliver data at 10s of Gb per second — approximately 10x faster than the previous state-of-the-art in the industry — to a target the size of a dime from more than 10 miles away. We are now starting to test these lasers in real-world conditions. When finished, our laser communications system can be used to connect our aircraft with each other and with the ground, making it possible to create a stratospheric network that can extend to even the remotest regions of the world.
We still have a long way to go in this work, but we are excited by our early progress. And much like we’ve done with the Open Compute Project, we plan to engage with the broader community and share what we’ve learned, so we can all move faster in the development of these technologies.
Don’t Roll Back the Clock on Choice and Control – An Open Letter from Mozilla’s Chris Beard to Microsoft’s CEO
Satya,
I am writing to you about a very disturbing aspect of Windows 10. Specifically, that the update experience appears to have been designed to throw away the choice your customers have made about the Internet experience they want, and replace it with the Internet experience Microsoft wants them to have.
When we first saw the Windows 10 upgrade experience that strips users of their choice by effectively overriding existing user preferences for the Web browser and other apps, we reached out to your team to discuss this issue. Unfortunately, it didn’t result in any meaningful progress, hence this letter.
We appreciate that it’s still technically possible to preserve people’s previous settings and defaults, but the design of the whole upgrade experience and the default settings APIs have been changed to make this less obvious and more difficult. It now takes more than twice the number of mouse clicks, scrolling through content and some technical sophistication for people to reassert the choices they had previously made in earlier versions of Windows. It’s confusing, hard to navigate and easy to get lost.
Mozilla exists to bring choice, control and opportunity to everyone. We build Firefox and our other products for this reason. We build Mozilla as a non-profit organization for this reason. And we work to make the Internet experience beyond our products represent these values as much as we can.
Sometimes we see great progress, where consumer products respect individuals and their choices. However, with the launch of Windows 10 we are deeply disappointed to see Microsoft take such a dramatic step backwards.
These changes aren’t unsettling to us because we’re the organization that makes Firefox. They are unsettling because there are millions of users who love Windows and who are having their choices ignored, and the increased complexity put into everyone’s way if and when they choose to make a choice different than what Microsoft prefers.
We strongly urge you to reconsider your business tactic here and again respect people’s right to choice and control of their online experience by making it easier, more obvious and intuitive for people to maintain the choices they have already made through the upgrade experience — and easier for people to assert new choices and preferences, not just for other Microsoft products, through the default settings APIs and user interfaces.
Please give your users the choice and control they deserve in Windows 10.
Sincerely,
Chris Beard
CEO, Mozilla
We are calling on Microsoft to “undo” its aggressive move to override user choice on Windows 10
Mozilla exists to bring choice, control and opportunity to everyone on the Web.
It is bewildering to see, after almost 15 years of progress bolstered by significant government intervention, that with Windows 10 user choice has now been all but removed. The upgrade process now appears to be purposefully designed to throw away the choices its customers have made about the Internet experience they want, and replace it with the Internet experience Microsoft wants them to have.
tweet-button
On the user choice benchmark, Microsoft’s Windows 10 falls woefully short, even when compared to its own past versions. While it is technically possible for people to preserve their previous settings and defaults, the design of the new Windows 10 upgrade experience and user interface does not make this obvious nor easy.We are deeply passionate about our mission to ensure people are front, center and squarely in the driver’s seat of their online experience, so when we first encountered development builds of Windows 10 that appeared would override millions of individual decisions people have made about their experience, we were compelled to immediately reach out to Microsoft to address this. And so we did. Unfortunately this didn’t result in any meaningful change.
Today we are sending an open letter to Microsoft’s CEO to again insist that Windows 10 make it easy, obvious and intuitive for people to maintain the choices they have already made — and make it easier for people to assert new choices and preferences.
In the meantime, we’re rolling out support materials and a tutorial video to help guide everyone through the process of preserving their choices on Windows 10.

For example, IBM and Box can offer more streamlined collaboration between patients and physicians for hospitals and healthcare providers in a security-rich environment. A hospital can share test results with patients, while maintaining a formal review with the physicians and nurses coordinating patient care.
IBM and Box also plan to help the world’s leading retailers manage their omni channel experiences. For example, a fashion retailer will be able to deliver a consistent brand experience that extends to all physical and e-commerce stores by sharing advertising images, promotional materials and product lines easily through any device, while maintaining control of merchandising consistency, pricing and packaging across all channels.
An insurance underwriter will be able to capture and review inspection reports while mobile, to expedite the approval process; a field worker can access up-to-date manuals to solve problems in real time, while documenting work in a central location to drive collaborative scheduling and planning.

Teaming Up with Google to Innovate Wireless says John Legere President and Chief Executive Officer of T-Mobile
It’s a good day for US wireless!
You may have heard the news this morning about a very cool new project T-Mobile and Google have partnered on. Project Fi is going to make people think differently about wireless—and I love that. Anything that shakes up the industry status quo is a good thing—for both US wireless customers and T-Mobile.
Google has well established their brand as a technology innovator that has benefited customers in a ton of fantastic ways. So, when our friends in Mountain View approached us with their ideas for changing up wireless, it was a no-brainer to team up with them again.
T-Mobile and Google go way back. In fact, we got together to launch the world’s very first Android smartphone in 2008—the T-Mobile G1. Since then, we’ve worked together to bring several breakthrough innovations to market—most recently the Nexus 6, the very first Nexus that will have Wi-Fi Calling (coming soon to your T-Mobile Nexus 6!).
Disruption is what the Un-carrier™ does. Our mission is to change the wireless industry for the better on behalf of all wireless consumers and business customers. We’re on a relentless crusade to bring these changes to reality through our signature moves and our cutting-edge network technologies. So if you’re looking for a partner who lives and breathes innovation − and has a network built for today’s data-centric world and data-hungry customers − it’s easy! You’re going to want to come to the Un-carrier. And we’re glad Google did just that.
One of the coolest things about Project Fi − IMHO − is Google’s new technology that allows them to move customers between Wi-Fi and cellular partner networks based on the network that’s the fastest at any given time.
Last fall, T-Mobile led the industry in un-leashing Wi-Fi, basically turning every Wi-Fi connection in the world into a T-Mobile tower. Now, Project Fi lets customers easily access public Wi-Fi and cellular networks − there’s no doubt that we share a vision that is great for customers.
Since the cellular connection will be made based on network speed, we expect to capture the largest share of traffic coming from Project Fi customers – and chances are good that these customers are going to be riding on America’s fastest nationwide 4G LTE network. The T-Mobile Data Strong™ network! If Project Fi customers are anything like our own, we expect they’ll be data-hungry!
And, while Project Fi may not include all of T-Mobile’s latest network innovations − like HD Voice or next-gen Wi-Fi Calling for seamless handoffs between LTE and Wi-Fi –we’ve worked with Google so they can offer up international roaming in over 100 countries and destinations, and we’ve shared the Un-carrier playbook for providing industry-leading customer service in wireless.
Our MVNO partners all share a common denominator: they all target a unique customer set with a specialized value proposition. But in particular, it’s been a blast working with the team at Google. They are our kind of people! Google shares the same kind of customer-first focus and passion for innovation that we have at T-Mobile.
Let me be 100% clear. Not only is this a great opportunity to put the T-Mobile network into the hands of even more Americans who spend their days and nights Periscoping, YouTubing, tweeting and streaming, the brand association is a strong one. It’s been fantastic to pull together some of the biggest brains in tech to drive innovation that could directly benefit tomorrow’s American wireless customers. The carriers have dug in their heels and held US wireless back for too long. This industry needs all the fresh blood and fresh thinking it can get.
CSC Announces Plan to Separate into Two Independent, Publicly Traded Companies
FALLS CHURCH, VA, –Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) today announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously approved a plan to separate the company into two publicly traded, pure-play leaders: one to serve commercial and government clients globally and one to serve public sector clients in the U.S.
Concurrent with the separation, CSC intends to pay a special cash dividend to shareholders of $10.50 per share at closing, which is expected by October 2015.
“CSC began its turnaround three years ago,” said CEO Mike Lawrie. “That turnaround has progressed strongly, and our focus now turns to positioning the business for long-term growth and leadership. The best way to accelerate that transformation is by separating the company into two businesses, each uniquely positioned to lead its market by focusing strongly on the needs of its clients.”
About the Companies
Both businesses will be industry leaders from day one.
CSC – Global Commercial will move forward as the trusted information technology (IT) services and solutions partner for Fortune 1,000 companies and non-U.S. government clients, leveraging its industry, infrastructure and consulting expertise to lead customers on their digital transformation journey. With $8.1 billion in FY 15 revenue, CSC Global Commercial will have more than 1,000 customers (including 175 of the Fortune 500), 51,000 employees and 34 delivery centers globally. The business will retain its leadership status across multiple markets, along with innovative offerings and industry-leading strategic partnerships.
CSC – U.S. Public Sector will be a top three provider of mission-specific IT, infrastructure and business services to U.S. federal, state and defense agencies. Building on more than a half-century of government service, the business also will be a leading IT services provider to national security. The public sector business had FY 15 revenues of $4.1 billion and employs 14,000 people, including 3,500 U.S. military veterans.
Rationale for the Separation
CSC’s Board of Directors made the decision to separate the commercial and public sector businesses as a result of several factors.
The “Get Fit” phase of the company’s turnaround has been successfully completed. Over the last three years, CSC has implemented a common operating model, streamlined its cost structure, improved its go-to-market performance and brought in proven leadership.
At the same time, markets have evolved rapidly, with diverging opportunities and challenges. On the commercial side, clients seek partners with a deep understanding of their business who can help lead their digital transformations. In the U.S. public sector, technology demands are increasing, and clients want providers with specific experience in government-focused innovation. By separating, each business will have the scale – among the largest in their respective categories – as well as the focus to meet unique customer needs and market requirements.
The two segments have different growth profiles and cash flow dynamics. The separation will allow both companies to better optimize their capital strategies and cost structures, and will provide investors with distinct long-term investment opportunities.
The market for talent has become highly competitive. As two independent, focused and market-leading organizations, each business will be better positioned to recruit and retain the best IT talent.
Based on these factors, CSC’s Board of Directors believes that the next phase of the turnaround, focused on growth, will be enhanced by the ability of the two businesses to function as pure plays focused exclusively on their respective customer segments.
“Our analysis shows significant benefits of going with a pure-play strategy,” Lawrie noted. “We expect this change to enable both businesses to enhance innovation and improve delivery, in ways that are consistent with the rate and pace of the markets they serve.”
Moving Forward
CSC will operate on a “business as usual” basis while details of the separation – including leadership, locations and other details – are being finalized. When the separation is concluded, it is expected that both businesses will have:
Operational and financial scale;
Adequate capital, consistent with investment-grade credit profiles; and
Industry-leading partnerships – built on CSC’s existing partner ecosystem – that have proven instrumental in the company’s recent success.
“During the first three years of CSC’s turnaround, we benefitted from taking a unified approach,” Lawrie concluded. “The progress we’ve made, coupled with the changing demands of the market, make this a good time to give these two businesses room to thrive as independent companies, able to move decisively to capture the opportunities in front of them.”
About the Transaction
The separation is intended to qualify as a tax-free transaction to CSC shareholders. Immediately following the separation, which is expected to be completed by the end of October 2015, CSC shareholders will own shares of both CSC – Global Commercial and CSC – U.S. Public Sector.
Completion of the separation will not require a shareholder vote but will be subject to customary conditions, including final approval of the CSC Board of Directors, the receipt of a favorable opinion from counsel with respect to the tax-free nature of the transaction, and the effectiveness of a Form 10 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Amazon Web Services Announces AWS Educate to Accelerate Cloud Learning in the Classroom
SEATTLE- Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ:AMZN), today announced the launch of AWS Educate, a program that helps educators and students use real-world cloud technology in the classroom to graduate students ready to enter the cloud workforce. AWS Educate is designed to make it easy for educators to quickly and easily find cloud-related course content, incorporate cloud technology into their teaching curriculum, and provide students with hands-on experience with cloud technology – with AWS credits to make the cloud more affordable than ever. AWS Educate is free for educational institutions, educators and students to join, following AWS’s approval of their application. To learn more about AWS Educate, visit: http://www.awseducate.com.
Cloud computing has rapidly transformed the way businesses and organizations across industries operate and innovate, such as researchers using the cloud to study genomics, non-profits using data analytics to better target donors, startups creating disruptive new applications, or established companies bringing new innovations to market faster. Cloud computing has become the default environment not just for building and deploying applications, but it has also become a key driver for transforming organizational innovation and business operations. As such, there is a growing demand for developers, information technology (IT) professionals, and forward-thinking business leaders with demonstrated knowledge of cloud computing. AWS Educate empowers educators with training, tools, and technologies to help students develop the skills to design, deploy and operate applications on the AWS Cloud.
“For years, the AWS educational grants program has put cloud technology in the hands of educators and students, giving them the ability to put big ideas into action. We’ve seen students develop assistive computer vision technology in collaboration with the National Federation of the Blind, and aspiring entrepreneurs take a web startup from conception to launch within 60 hours,” said Teresa Carlson, Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector, AWS. “Based on the feedback and success of our grant recipients and the global need for cloud-skilled workers, we developed AWS Educate to help even more students learn cloud technology firsthand in the classroom. We’re pleased to offer AWS Educate to educators, students and educational institutions around the world.”
By joining the program at http://www.awseducate.com, educator and student members receive several benefits, including:
AWS credits: Educators and students can apply for and redeem AWS credits for eligible services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon CloudFront, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR), Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Glacier. While students and educators at any educational institution may join the program, those affiliated with an institution that becomes a member may receive additional AWS credits.
Web-based training and self-paced labs: Access to self-paced labs can help educators and students gain hands-on experience working with AWS technologies; additionally, educators receive online access to AWS Essentials courses for a thorough technical overview of AWS products and common solutions.
Collaboration forums: Educators and students can attend in-person and virtual events designed to help the AWS Educate community incorporate cloud technology into coursework; additionally, educators have access to a forum in which they can join discussions with other AWS Educators.
AWS resources: All AWS Educate members have access to a wide library of learning materials they may use in their classrooms, including webinars on best practices, instructional videos on AWS services, and customer case studies.
Educator content: Educators can access and share professional development materials to help them incorporate cloud technology into their coursework. Currently, AWS Educate houses over 100 educator-uploaded materials from many of the top computer science universities around the world, including Harvard University, Stanford University, and Cornell Tech. Materials include a wide range of full courses, syllabi, lectures, and homework assignments, for example: lectures, videos, and assignments from University of Pennsylvania Professor Zack Ives’ Scalable and Cloud Computing class; University of Toronto’s Eyal de Lara’s Introduction to Cloud Computing class; and University of Washington’s Magdalena Balazinska’s Introduction to Data Management class.
Dr. Majd Sakr, computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, said, “Three years ago, I began incorporating AWS services into my cloud computing courses. The cloud resources AWS provided me has allowed me to really challenge my students to develop real-world solutions to problems they might face in their careers. One such project involves giving students 1.2 terabytes of Twitter data and asking them to compete against other students by building a tweet query web service that meets correctness, budget and throughput requirements. So far, we’ve had over 770 students complete this course, and as an institution, we are committed to expanding our use of AWS technology in the classroom over the next several years through AWS Educate.”
Professor Zack Ives at the University of Pennsylvania shared complete course materials and assignments (jointly developed with his colleague, Professor Andreas Haeberlen) from two classes with AWS Educate. Professor Ives said, “I am a big believer in course projects that fully exercise what the students are learning in the class, and simultaneously demystify the popular services they use every day. We give them realistic projects, such as a full-fledged social network with friend recommendation, or building a Web crawler and search engine. AWS Educate completely changes the scope of the resources we can make available for the project — even in a large class, they see what it takes to truly harness Hadoop, cloud key-value stores, and clusters of virtual machines. This experience is imperative to giving them the ability and confidence to succeed in their future careers. I’m happy to share my coursework with the AWS Educate educator community, and look forward to learning from fellow computer science professors.”
The Los Angeles High Impact Information Technology, Entertainment & Entrepreneurship, and Communications Hubs (LA HI-TECH) is a regional consortium of eight community colleges with a mission of building and sustaining a skilled and competitive workforce that contributes to the economic growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). “By providing content, training resources, and access to AWS credits for students, AWS Educate helps us create clear career pathways in IT for almost 2,000 community college students,” said Dr. Patricia Ramos, Dean of Workforce and Economic Development, Santa Monica College and West Regional Hub Chair of LA HI-TECH. “Our regional consortium of eight Los Angeles-area community colleges, LA Unified School District, and four other school districts and charters, relies on access to new technology and knowledge sharing between educators to equip our students with the skills needed to succeed in a competitive workforce.”

Visualead’s Technology Powers Alibaba Group’s New Product Engagement and Anti-counterfeiting Platform
HANGZHOU, May 18, 2015 - Visualead, an Israeli startup and pioneer of Visual QR Code technology, revealed today its new standard for O2O (Offline to Online) -- Dotless Visual Codes, designed to provide superior connectivity experiences for Offline to Online transactions. The new codes resemble QR Codes in their distinct square markers, which intuitively inform consumers that the codes should be scanned with a mobile device. However, as opposed to monochrome QR Codes, Dotless Visual Codes are designed to embed a colorful image, logo, or a visual call to action on 90% of the code's surface, making them far more visually appealing and engaging to consumers. The new standard also utilizes multiple information security and computer vision methods that make Dotless Visual Codes more secure than regular QR Codes.
The new Dotless Visual Codes were debuted today as part of an event organized by Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA) to launch its "Blue Stars" platform for product engagement and anti-counterfeiting. Alibaba’s new platform, for which Visualead is a leading technology partner, enables product manufacturers to print labels with unique codes for each individual product package. When consumers scan the Blue Stars codes with Alibaba Group’s Mobile Taobao application they receive information about the specific product, such as feedback on the authenticity of the product they are holding or targeted online promotions directly from the product brand. Leading brands, such as L’Oréal and Ferrero, have created millions of unique Dotless Visual Codes for their product packages sold in China.
"Alibaba Group is dedicated to providing our community of merchants with innovative solutions to help them grow in today’s mobile era. We are happy to work together with Visualead to introduce its new Dotless Visual Codes standard to our merchants as an important part of our Blue Stars platform,” said Zhang Kuo, director of Alibaba Group's mobile business division.
Dotless Visual Codes are part of Visualead's new "Secure O2O" offering, which enables enterprises to connect with their customers Offline and Online in a secure and effective way. The new codes use Visualead's patent-pending technology and require a secure scanner application to scan the codes. Alibaba's popular Mobile Taobao application, the #1 e-commerce app in China, has already integrated Visualead's secure scanner SDK. Visualead's Secure O2O connectivity solutions are applicable not only for product packaging and anti-counterfeiting, but also for social networks, website login and authentication, mobile payments, mobile coupons, and mobile ticketing.
"Visualead is leading the O2O technology market since its foundation in 2012, introducing innovative technology standards such as our patented Visual QR Codes, Animation QR Codes and Video QR codes," said Nevo Alva, co-founder and CEO of Visualead. "Our Secure O2O offering answers a growing market demand by leading enterprises worldwide for secure solutions to power Offline to Online transactions on smartphone devices. The new Dotless Visual Code standard, which is based on our team's deep expertise in computer vision, machine learning and O2O user experience, answers the enterprise's need for security while increasing consumer engagement with the brand. "
Visualead's Secure O2O offering, including the new Dotless Visual Codes, is demonstrated in a new video the company released. You can watch the video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE-1924kjfQ.

Verizon Announces Software Defined Networking Strategy – SDN Initiative Means Rapid Time-to-Market and Agile Network
NEW YORK – Verizon, working closely with a number of its key technology partners – Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper Networks and Nokia Networks – announced today it is transforming its network by implementing a software defined network architecture, laying the groundwork for new innovative services and applications. This SDN-based architecture is designed to introduce new operational efficiencies and allow for the enablement of rapid and flexible service delivery to Verizon’s customers.
SDN is a new approach to designing, building and managing communications networks.
It enables network programmability leveraging a centralized controller and orchestrator to program network flows. This centralized network control will drive a number of key customer facing benefits, including:
Elastic, scalable, network-wide service creation and near real-time service delivery.
Operational agility via dynamic resource allocation and management as well as automation of network operations.
Verizon has a long history of driving significant technology shifts with support from its technology suppliers. Verizon was the first major carrier to deploy a large-scale fiber-to-the-home strategy; the first to launch a nationwide 3G network; and the first national carrier to broadly deploy LTE. Today’s announcement highlights Verizon’s ongoing efforts to change the way it designs, develops and manages its networks.
To enable its network vision, Verizon and its technology vendors have co-authored a comprehensive SDN network architecture document, which includes all interface specifications and reference architectures plus requirements for both the control layer and forwarding box functions. This network architecture document will enable Verizon’s key technology partners to develop solutions to achieve the business and technical benefits of an SDN-enabled network.
Much of the foundational work required to deliver on Verizon’s next-generation network has been underway for several years. Verizon has created live lab environments in San Jose, California; Tampa, Florida; and Waltham, Massachusetts, and has commercial data center environments on both the East and West Coasts.

####
Following are quotes from executives at Verizon and its major SDN technology partners:
“Verizon and our key technology partners have always focused on providing high-performance networks for our customers, and with this SDN architecture we will continue to ensure our network and services meet the needs of our customers, today and in the future.”
Roger Gurnani, Verizon chief information and technology architect
“Verizon shares our vision of a future network that provides seemingly limitless capacity and is able to instantly adapt to the needs of businesses and consumers. We know this can be possible with virtualization, SDN technology and the ability to tap into the power of a strong, tightly paired IP and optical backbone network capable of handling people’s insatiable appetite to connect, share and consume content.”
Marcus Weldon, Alcatel-Lucent president of Bell Labs and chief technology officer
“Verizon and Cisco have a long-standing technology and business relationship, and we are pleased to play a key role in Verizon’s next-generation, software-defined network architecture. This will become the foundation for innovative, new Verizon services and applications. Both companies share a vision to transform the entirety of the network architecture to achieve the speed and operational efficiency required to meet the needs of today, as well as capture the growth opportunities to monetize with the Internet of Everything over the next decade and beyond.”
John Chambers, Cisco chairman and chief executive officer
“We look forward to joining forces with Verizon in defining the industry shift towards SDN-based network architecture. Our joint efforts started in 2009, with the successful large scale introduction of LTE. We are now ready to leverage Ericsson’s strength in software and services to provide a robust network transformation that will benefit Verizon and its customers.”
Hans Vestberg, Ericsson president and chief executive officer
“Juniper is pleased to continue its long-standing collaboration with Verizon. We share a common vision for agile, automated and accelerated service creation enabled by SDN. Network innovation is fundamental to deploying highly scalable, secure and efficient cloud environments that adapt in real time. As a leader in high-performance networking, Juniper will team up with Verizon to deploy their SDN initiative to serve their customers’ ever-changing needs.”
Rami Rahim, Juniper Networks chief executive officer
“Cloud technologies hold the promise for true innovation in our industry. We are pleased to extend our strong relationship with Verizon beyond core software, rich communication technologies and services into the exciting area of software defined network solutions for the next generation of their intelligent, connected network.”
Google’s Unique Approach to Increasing the Diversity of its Workforce
When we released the composition of our workforce almost a year ago, it confirmed what many people suspected: the tech industry needs to do a lot more when it comes to diversity. Since then, the question I get asked most is—so what are you doing about it?
You may have heard about some of the work we’ve been doing: embedding engineers at Historically Black Colleges and Universities; partnering with Hollywood to inspire girls to pursue careers in computer science; building local initiatives to introduce coding to high school students from diverse communities; and expanding our employee unconscious bias training.
But these programs represent only a sampling of all the work that is going on behind the scenes. If we’re really going to make an impact, we need a holistic plan. Today, we want to share our diversity strategy, which is focused on four key areas:
Hire diverse Googlers: In the past, our university-focused hiring programs have relied heavily on a relatively small number of schools. But, we know those schools aren’t always the most diverse. For example, while 14% of Hispanic college enrollment is at 4-year schools, Hispanics make up just 7% at the 200 most selective schools. In the past two years, we’ve doubled the number of schools where we recruit, to promote student diversity. This year, nearly 20 percent of the hires we make from a university are from these new campuses.
Foster a fair and inclusive culture: We want to ensure that we have an environment where all Googlers can thrive. We’ve raised awareness around unconscious bias—half of all Googlers have participated in our unconscious bias workshops—and we’ve now rolled out a hands-on workshop that provides practical tips for addressing bias when we see it. We’re also drawing on the idea of 20 percent time to enable employees to use their time at work to focus on diversity projects. In 2015, more than 500 Googlers will participate in Diversity Core, a formal program in which employees contribute—as part of their job—to the company’s diversity efforts.
Expand the pool of technologists: Making computer science (CS) education accessible and available to everyone is one of our most important initiatives. Our CS First program is designed to help anyone—a teacher, a coach, or volunteer—teach kids the basics of coding. And since research tells us that to inspire more girls, we need to show them that computer science isn’t just for boys, we started Made with Code—and we’re working with the entertainment industry to change the perceptions around CS and what it means to be a computer scientist.
Bridge the digital divide: We also want more underrepresented communities, including women and minorities, to share the benefits of the web, and to have access to the economic engine it provides. The Accelerate with Google Academy helps business owners get online, grow and drive economic impact.
With an organization of our size, meaningful change will take time. From one year to the next, bit by bit, our progress will inch forward. More importantly, our industry will become more inclusive, and the opportunities for currently underrepresented groups will grow. We’ll share our updated diversity data for 2015 soon. We’re gradually making progress across these four areas, and we’re in it for the long term.

Microsoft Empowers Windows, iOS, Android, Mac and Linux Developers to Reach Billions of New Customers
SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday announced new features in Windows 10 and unveiled a set of software development kits (SDKs) to help developers bring their code for the Web, .NET, Win32, Android and iOS to Windows 10. At the company’s annual Build developer conference, Microsoft also announced new Microsoft Azure data services for intelligent applications; Visual Studio and .NET tools and runtimes for Windows, Mac and Linux; and APIs that enable developers to build rich apps with Office 365.
“Microsoft has bold ambitions for platforms that empower developers across Windows, Azure and Office,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Together, we will create more personal and more intelligent experiences that empower billions of people to achieve more.”
Windows 10 offers unique scale and opens up new platform opportunities for developers
Microsoft showcased several new features in Windows 10, from new capabilities to scale applications across devices to new ways for developers to build code for Windows 10. Capturing the breadth of opportunity, the company declared its ambition to have 1 billion active Windows 10 devices by FY18.
The company further detailed ways in which developers can create a single app that scales across all Windows 10 devices, automatically adapting to different screen sizes. With the Universal Windows Platform, developers can tailor their apps to the unique capabilities of each device, integrate Cortana and Xbox Live into their apps, offer trusted commerce, create holograms, and publish their apps into the Windows Store. Also as part of the Universal Windows Platform, the company shared how apps can scale using Continuum for phones, enabling people to use their phones like PCs for productivity or entertainment.1
The Windows Store will also offer a single unified experience for Windows 10 customers across devices and make finding great content easier than ever — across apps, games, music, video and other content.2 Transactions will take advantage of a range of popular payment options, including the largest carrier billing footprint of any ecosystem supporting 90 mobile operators. USA Today, WeChat, Disney and Netflix Inc. are a few of the partners referenced in the keynote already building apps for the Windows Store.
Microsoft welcomed all developers to the Universal Windows Platform by announcing four new software development toolkits that will make it easy to bring their code for the Web, .NET, Win32, iOS and Android to the Windows Store with minimal code modifications. This will enable developers to start with an existing code base such as Android or iOS, integrate with the Universal Windows Platform capabilities, and then distribute their new application through the Windows Store.
New features for Microsoft Edge, the new browser for Windows 10, were also unveiled, offering developers better discoverability of their apps and future extensibility with JavaScript and HTML.
Highlighting the opportunity with Windows 10, Microsoft shared the progress it has made in fewer than 100 days since unveiling Microsoft HoloLens — the world’s first untethered holographic computer powered by Windows 10 — and showcased how customers like Trimble, Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic are using this innovative new technology.
More information on Windows 10 and Microsoft HoloLens can be found at Blogging Windows.
Azure and Visual Studio help developers build intelligent apps on multiple platforms and devices
Microsoft previewed Azure SQL Database elastic database, which allow ISVs and software-as-a-service developers to pool capacity across thousands of databases, enabling them to benefit from efficient resource consumption and the best price and performance in the public cloud. To help developers manage massive datasets, Microsoft introduced Azure SQL Data Warehouse, the industry’s first enterprise-class cloud data warehouse as a service that can grow, shrink and pause in seconds. Microsoft also announced Azure Data Lake, an open and massively scalable data repository that supports petabyte-size files and provides high-speed integration with Azure HDInsight, Azure Machine Learning, Cloudera and Hortonworks to quickly derive insights from vast amounts of data.
To help every developer be more productive, Microsoft announced new best-in-class tools and runtimes for multiple platforms and devices. In preview on Windows, Mac and Linux, Visual Studio Code is a free code-focused editor optimized for Web and cloud applications. Furthering its work with open source and .NET communities, Microsoft released a preview of the .NET Core for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Microsoft also released Visual Studio 2015 Release Candidate, which makes it easier for developers to build and deploy applications to Windows, Linux, iOS and Android platforms.
Office gives developers opportunities to reach more users and build intelligent solutions
Microsoft introduced more ways for developers to reach 1.2 billion Office users, including the new Office Graph API, expanded add-in capabilities for the iPad and Outlook, and unified APIs. The Office Graph API allows customers and developers to access, add to and build with the Office Graph, an intelligent store of Office 365 user, service and relationship data. Unified APIs across OneNote, Outlook and OneDrive, combined with the Office Graph, will enable developers to help consumers and organizations take advantage of some of their most valuable and useful data.
