Warner Bros. Television and Warner Bros. UK Announce New Company Name for UK Television Production Operation
LONDON and BURBANK, Calif. — Following its acquisition of 100% of the outstanding shares of Shed Media Group, the Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) and Warner Bros. UK today announced a new company name and senior management team for its UK-based television production business. Shed Media Group will be re-branded as Warner Bros. Television Productions UK, and key company executives Nick Emmerson and Claire Hungate have both been promoted to lead the new entity, with Emmerson tapped to serve as Managing Director and Hungate named Co-Managing Director.
Emmerson and Hungate will succeed current Shed Media Group CEO Nick Southgate, who has decided to leave the company upon the completion of the transaction that will see WBTVG take full ownership of one of the UK’s largest and most successful production companies, which is comprised of Wall to Wall, Twenty Twenty Television, Ricochet, Watershed Television, Renegade Pictures, Yalli and Headstrong Pictures.
As Managing Director of the newly named Warner Bros. Television Productions UK, Nick Emmerson will report to WBTVG President and Chief Content Officer Peter Roth on all creative matters, and he will work very closely with Mike Darnell, President, Warner Bros. Unscripted and Alternative Television. In his new role, Emmerson will be responsible for the overall operation of the new company and will have a primary focus on creative affairs across the group, with the heads of Wall to Wall, Twenty Twenty, Ricochet, Watershed, Renegade, Yalli and Headstrong reporting to him. Emmerson will also continue to build upon the company’s successful creative collaboration with WBTVG’s U.S. production units such as Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative Television (including Warner Horizon Unscripted Television, Telepictures and Shed Media US) as well as Warner Bros. Television and Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
As Co-Managing Director of Warner Bros. Television Productions UK, Claire Hungate will serve as the company’s top business, strategy and operations executive. Television Productions UK. We look forward to continued success across the globe with the combination of our U.S., UK and international television production businesses, including the recently acquired Eyeworks Group and the BlazHoffski Group.”
Roth, Schlesinger and Hunegs continued: “We also want to thank Nick Southgate for both his Creative and strategic success during his 15 years at the company and especially during the last three years of our partnership.”

Nick Emmerson said: “I’m delighted to get the opportunity to focus on giving the hugely talented and creative leaders of Wall to Wall, Ricochet, Twenty Twenty, Renegade, Watershed, Headstrong and Yalli all the tools they need to do what they do best — make great television programmes. I couldn’t be happier that I’ll be joined on this mission by Claire Hungate. I first worked with Claire back in our Princess Productions days, and I know from experience that she’s the first name you’d want on your team sheet.”
Claire Hungate said: “Having worked to grow Wall to Wall and ultimately the Shed Group alongside Nick Southgate, it’s now fantastic to be part of the leadership team taking the company to a new level, as Warner Bros. Television Productions UK. I look forward to working with Nick Emmerson and the great creative and strategic teams across the company to continue growing its presence and success in the UK TV production space.”
Immediately prior to being named to this new post, Emmerson had served as CEO of Ricochet Television since January 2013, leading of one of Britain’s most accomplished producers of high quality unscripted entertainment programming. Before that, he had been Executive Vice President of Ricochet Television USA since 2006. During his tenure with the company in the U.S., Emmerson executive produced many hit U.S. shows, including ABC’s Supernanny, Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City and Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog.
Previous to working in America, Emmerson was an executive producer at Ricochet Television in the UK, where he produced numerous unscripted specials and series, including co-creating/executive producing the British version of Supernanny, before developing it for ABC in the U.S. Prior to joining Ricochet, Emmerson was a series producer for Princess Productions, where he worked on Bedrock, a live children’s show for ITV2; Good Evening Rockall, a current affairs game show for the BBC; and Jailbreak, a reality-competition show for Channel 5. He was part of the London Weekend Television team that launched the ITV2 Network, and his credits also include producing a soccer-themed studio show for the 1998 World Cup.
Before being named Co-Managing Director of Warner Bros. Television Productions UK, Hungate had been Chief Operating Officer of Shed Media Group since November 2010. In this role, Hungate was responsible for overseeing the commercial, digital, legal and business affairs strategy across the Group, and she also managed the post-production, information technology and operational aspects of the business. She also worked closely with the divisions of the Warner Bros. Television Group, including Warner Bros. International Television Production, on the effective distribution and format sales of the Group’s intellectual property around the world. Hungate served as a key advisor to the CEO on the Group’s acquisitions, new business and growth strategy, and she was part of the executive team which helped to shape the eventual acquisition of Shed Media by WBTVG and the acquisition of Renegade Pictures by Shed Media in 2012.
For nearly six years prior, Hungate worked at Shed subsidiary Wall to Wall, where she served as Managing Director since 2008 after joining the company in 2004 as Legal and Commercial Director. FAA to Consider Exemptions for Commercial UAS Movie and TV Production
WASHINGTON –The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration today announced that seven aerial photo and video production companies have asked for regulatory exemptions that would allow the film and television industry to use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with FAA approval for the first time.
If the exemption requests are granted, there could be tangible economic benefits as the agency begins to address the demand for commercial UAS operations. However, all the associated safety issues must be carefully considered to make sure any hazards are appropriately mitigated. The petitioner must still obtain operational approval from the FAA.
The Motion Picture Association of America facilitated the exemption requests on behalf of their membership. The firms that filed the petitions are all independent aerial cinematography professionals who collectively developed the exemption requests as a requirement to satisfy the safety and public interest concerns of the FAA, MPAA and the public at large.
The FAA has been working for several months to implement the provisions of Section 333 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 and move forward with UAS integration before proposing a small UAS rule. Companies from three industries besides film production have approached the FAA and are also considering filing exemption requests. These industries include precision agriculture, power line and pipeline inspection, and oil and gas flare stack inspection.
The firms are asking the agency to grant exemptions from regulations that address general flight rules, pilot certificate requirements, manuals, maintenance and equipment mandates. They are also asking for relief from airworthiness certification requirements as allowed under Section 333. Under that section of the law, certain airworthiness requirements can be waived to let specific UAS fly safely in narrowly-defined, controlled, low-risk situations.
To receive the exemptions, the firms must show that their UAS operations will not adversely affect safety, or provide at least an equal level of safety to the rules from which they seek the exemption. They would also need to show why granting the exemption would be in the public interest.
Currently, Certificates of Waiver or Authorization are available to public entities that want to fly a UAS in civil airspace. Common uses today include law enforcement, firefighting, border patrol, disaster relief, search and rescue, military training, and other government operational missions. Commercial operations are authorized on a case-by-case basis. A commercial flight requires a certified aircraft, a licensed pilot and operating approval. The exemption process under Section 333 provides an additional avenue for commercial UAS operations.

Technological Progress and Economic Crisis Reshape Media Landscape, According to New UNESCO Report
© UNESCO
Advances in technology and innovative business models have opened avenues for freedom of expression across the world, but new challenges have also emerged in the form of internet censorship, filtering, blocking and surveillance, according to a UNESCO report released today in Stockholm.
The study, World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development, recognizes that new technologies have empowered individuals with unprecedented opportunities to access, produce and share media content across multiple platforms. At the same time, the Report warns that the increasing control of online content by Internet intermediaries, such as search engines and social media networks, threatens transparency in the free flow of information and raises concerns about the “privatization of censorship.” According to the Report, journalists and online media actors face new threats related to their safety in the digital sphere.
For UNESCO, the findings of the Report call for reinforced action in support of press freedom.
“Freedom of expression is essential to dignity, dialogue, democracy and sustainable development”, said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO. “We need to act on the ground – to strengthen national legislative frameworks, to train journalists, to build capacity and advance media and information literacy. We must continue to support media independence by promoting professional standards and self-regulation,” she added.
In partnership with UNESCO, an Advisory Group of 27 international experts from civil society and academia contributed to the study, which analyzes trends in press freedom along four dimensions: freedom, pluralism, independence and the safety of journalists. The Report explores major trends in these areas since 2007 around the world, with a particular focus on global media and the gender dimensions of press freedom.
According to the Report, progress towards greater media freedom has lost momentum in some regions that have experienced political transitions, and press freedom laws have not always been effectively implemented. Direct and self-censorship remain challenges to journalists worldwide.
Despite the continued economic dominance of a handful of companies in both traditional and online media, the vast expansion of information sources and platforms has positively impacted media pluralism.
The Report also finds that State or public advertising continue to affect independent reporting. At the same time new business models are prompting the emergence of independent journalistic organizations, such as non-profit investigative journalism groups.
International awareness of the importance of journalists’ safety has significantly risen over the last six years. This is due in large part to the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. However, the number of journalist killings has continued to rise. According to UNESCO’s data, 430 journalists were killed between 2007 and 2012, including 23 women, who face rising forms of intimidation and abuse, including sexual assault. Although conflict zones remain the most dangerous places for journalists, between 2007 and 2011 more were killed outside of these areas, and impunity for these crimes remains the norm, the Report notes.
Additional regional sections in each of the four thematic chapters will be published as an online companion to the Report later this spring.
World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development was produced with support from the Government of Sweden.

Michael Roth, Chairman and CEO of Interpublic, commented, “Outdoor advertising’s transition to a more digital channel has made it one of the fastest growing media disciplines and has put Rapport Worldwide at the forefront of how agencies and clients can deliver innovative messaging on the channel. Working with ADstruc, we expect Rapport’s leadership position in the industry to continue and strengthen.” Roth continued, “The IPG Media Lab is unique in its ability to identify key partners that can jumpstart greater efficiency and accountability in the ad industry. They know all sides of the business and have a successful track record when it comes to honing in on companies that can move the needle for our clients’ businesses. This strategic partnership with ADstruc will be equally effective.”
Chad Stoller, Managing Partner, IPG Media Lab commented, “ADstruc has managed to do what no player in the ad space has done before. It has obtained the buy-in of all the major operators as well as hundreds of smaller regional owners of outdoor, in order to seamlessly consolidate, track and buy outdoor media.”
In addition to the IPG investment, Rapport U.S. has entered into a strategic agreement with ADstruc. The agreement includes the implementation of a new model that will shift the purchase of Rapport’s OOH buys to a more automated system, in keeping with IPG Mediabrands’ commitment to automate half of its media buys by 2016.
Mike Cooper, President of Rapport U.S., stated, “Outdoor advertising can be an efficient and accurate channel for clients. However, buying and planning OOH can also be a cumbersome, disjointed process. This deal streamlines the process and puts Rapport where we need to be. It frees up our account teams to think and plan more creatively, focusing on service and results for our clients.”
The ADstruc platform connects each component of Rapport’s planning and buying through its third-party integrations, including Mediaocean and Telmar. It will enable Rapport’s OOH planners to quickly and easily plan and buy OOH audiences in line with other media, making their campaigns more measurable and accountable.
John Laramie, the CEO and Founder of ADstruc added, “This long-term commitment from one of the industry’s most important players in advertising is a big step for the OOH industry. It sets the standard for how OOH media will be planned and bought going forward, and brings efficiencies to both sides of the market. We are excited to work with IPG and Rapport and look forward to a long-term successful partnership.”

Omnicom and TBWA acquires the Brazilian agency Mood
NEW YORK,– TBWA Worldwide today announced the acquisition of an advertising agency in Brazil, Mood. TBWA, an Omnicom Group Inc. (NYSE: OMC) advertising network, will take a majority share in Mood, headed by Augusto Cruz Neto.
With the conclusion of the deal, Cruz will retain a significant minority share in the company and will continue in the role of president for Mood. The agency will keep its original name, clients and team. “I was courted by many international groups, but I chose a partnership with Omnicom and TBWA because it is a group which respects entrepreneurship and creativity, and also because of my relationship with Luiz Lara, who has always respected our total independence to work,” Augusto Cruz Neto said.
The acquisition comes at one of the best times for the agency, which finished 2013 with a 25% growth rate over the previous period. In the first two months of 2014, Mood also announced it had won business from restaurant chain Giraffas, the sandwich franchise Tostex and the American portable electrical appliances brand Oster.
James Fenton, CFO of TBWA Americas, commented “Mood is an agency I’ve admired since first being introduced to them several years ago, and I’m excited that they are now part of the TBWA Network. They are an impressive agency with an outstanding creative team and expertise in a broad range of disciplines, taking a truly integrated approach. We see this as a strategic move to continue expanding the capabilities of the TBWA Brazil Group in the fast-moving Brazilian market. Mood’s culture of innovation and depth of talent will strengthen our business capabilities, not only in Brazil, but around the TBWA Worldwide network.”
Augusto Cruz Neto highlights that taking on a new partner was inevitable in order for Mood to keep growing. “We realized that we needed to partner with a great network to enable us to keep evolving at this pace,” he states. “TBWA’s proposal recognized the philosophy of an agency based on integrated communications, what we call the ‘3D Concept.’ Therefore the proposal recognized not only Mood’s economic value, but also — and most importantly — the brand’s potential for the future,” he added.
In the market for seven years, Mood is a success case among young agencies in a sector dominated by international groups responsible for a major part of the advertising budget. The company, at first conceived to carry out promotions, activations and events, has proven effective by betting on its multidisciplinary aptitude to gain market share. Driven by contributing to the business success of its clients, Mood’s scope of work includes advertising, digital, direct marketing and design. Mood has 85 employees in its Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro offices.

CBS Launches Dynamic AD Insertion Capabilities for On-Demand Programming
NEW YORK, N.Y. – CBS Corporation today announced the launch of dynamic ad insertion capabilities for the CBS Television Network’s on-demand programming. The dynamic ads will be delivered through Canoe, an advertising technology company that enables national television networks and other content providers to explore further monetization of their content beyond the traditional three-day window. The availability of dynamic ad insertion enables CBS to offer advertisers increased audience reach and the flexibility to easily change advertisements at any time within its on-demand programming.
As the most-watched network on-demand[1], CBS’s introduction of dynamic ad insertion allows advertisers more opportunities to reach key demographics as time shifting through VOD, as well as streaming and DVR, continues to grow. This increase in multiplatform audiences has brought new viewers to the CBS Television Network and built on its standing as the #1 network in the business. The addition of dynamic ad insertion will further expand the Network’s ability to monetize beyond the live +3 and live +7 day windows.
“With the launch of dynamic ad insertion we are unlocking new and valuable on-demand inventory for our advertisers with added reach and flexibility,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Entertainment, Sports and News, CBS Interactive. “The rollout of dynamic ad insertion for our VOD programming is another key step in our multiplatform distribution and monetization strategy as we continue to see meaningful lift in online, mobile and on-demand viewership.”
“As the on-demand platform and the viewing it delivers continues to evolve and grow, we’re pleased to offer our clients even greater scheduling flexibility and reach through dynamic ad insertion,” said Jo Ann Ross, President, CBS Network Sales. “Our advertisers recognize the value of delayed viewing both in terms of sheer volume and the quality of the audience it delivers. Having the ability to switch creative copy in a significant portion of this footprint makes VOD an even more attractive option for clients moving forward.”

Warner Bros. To Acquire The Eyeworks Group In Deal That Grows International TV Production Business
Amsterdam, London, Burbank – As part of the studio’s television growth strategy, Warner Bros. Television Group today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire¹ all Eyeworks’ businesses outside the US, in 15 countries across Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand, adding 13 new territories to its network of production companies. Once completed, this acquisition will further strengthen Warner Bros.’ international television production capabilities and see Warner Bros. take over all of Eyeworks’ international distribution activities.
The announcement was made by Jeffrey Schlesinger, President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, Craig Hunegs President, Business and Strategy, Warner Bros. Television Group, Peter Roth, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Television Group and Reinout Oerlemans, Founder and current Chief Executive Officer of the Eyeworks Group.
Founded in The Netherlands by Oerlemans in 2001, Eyeworks is a major international independent producer and distributor of scripted and non-scripted content across a range of genres, including entertainment, drama and film, which airs in more than 150 countries worldwide.
The pending acquisition of Eyeworks marks a milestone for Warner Bros. International Television Production, led by Ronald Goes, Executive Vice President & Head of Warner Bros. International Television Production, which was originally formed by WBTVG in 2009 to establish operating production companies.
Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment said: “Our proposed acquisition of Eyeworks’ 15 local production companies, represents a significant next step in our strategy, further strengthening Warner Bros.’ position in global television .”
Hunegs, Schlesinger and Roth added: “This is an important move for the Warner Bros. Television Group, as we establish local production companies around the world, each with a mandate to develop original local programming and adapt the output from the studio. We see Eyeworks as a strong complement to our existing US and international production capabilities.”
This follows the acquisition in 2010 of Shed Media, one of the leading production companies in the UK, and in 2011, BlazHoffski in The Netherlands and Belgium.
In connection with the transaction, Reinout Oerlemans would move to Los Angeles for his new role in the industry, as Chairman of Eyeworks USA, leading the further expansion of that company in the USA. Reinout will step down as CEO of the Eyeworks Group once the acquisition has been completed.

For Eyeworks, this is a defining step towards our ongoing objective to be a major player in content production around the globe. I realize this is the end of an era, because I will no longer be the CEO of the Group, after an amazing period of 12.5 years since I’ve built the company from scratch together with Ronald van Wechem and Robert van den Bogaard. Together with CFO Jan Peter Kerstens we have created Eyeworks as what it is today: a creative and versatile content company, operating as a tight knit web around the world. I know Ronald Goes will be a tremendous leader for this fantastic group of talented people going forward”.
¹The acquisition of Eyeworks is expected to be complete later in 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.

DIRECTV and DISH Revolutionize Political TV Advertising Landscape
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 26, 2014 – DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV) and DISH Network L.L.C., a wholly owned subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), have joined forces to offer an addressable advertising platform of unprecedented scale and reach for political campaigns. The strategic relationship will allow participating statewide political campaigns to target their TV ads at the household level within 20+ million DIRECTV and DISH homes.
The DIRECTV-DISH arrangement will focus on political TV advertisements only, while the companies’ other media sales efforts will continue to operate independently.
“The DIRECTV/DISH addressable advertising platform utilizes highly sophisticated and targeted technology that will allow political campaigns to specifically reach swing voters with TV ads. Campaigns can focus their message to a precise set of potential voters and eliminate the spending waste,” said Keith Kazerman, senior vice president of ad sales, DIRECTV. “The platform not only uniquely monetizes big data, which has become critical to every political campaign, but it does it at scale. It’s the perfect complement to local DMA cable buys and a fiscally compelling alternative to local broadcast.”
“Individually, DISH and DIRECTV have pioneered household-addressable advertising across a national footprint for more than two years,” said Warren Schlichting, senior vice president of DISH media sales. “As campaigns utilize more and more data, household-addressable advertising introduces a powerful tool to deliver a tailored message to a precise and measurable audience. Together, DISH and DIRECTV reach nearly one out of every five U.S. television households and usher TV into the modern political age.”
DIRECTV and DISH utilize the same technology to deliver addressable advertising at the household level to a combined audience of more than 20 million households.
Using the same methodology of direct mail, addressable advertising allows advertisers to reach their desired audience with accuracy and combines the emotional impact of TV with nationwide reach and scale.
