JetBlue and Manhattan Portage Recycle Unused Uniforms to Create a Fashion-Forward Bag Collection
NEW YORK, NY — JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU), New York’s Hometown Airline™, today announced a partnership with Manhattan Portage, a brand known for pioneering and manufacturing the original New York City bicycle messenger bags. The environmentally-conscious airline partnered with Manhattan Portage to launch a fashion-forward, recycled bag collection perfect for those on the go and those wanting to carry a piece of the airline’s history. This limited edition unisex “JetBlue Uniform Bag collection” will be available starting on April 22 (Earth Day) online at http://www.manhattanportage.com/catalog/JetBlue.php and Manhattan Portage stores.
Last year, JetBlue introduced new uniforms across the airline for the first time in its history. At the same time, the airline worked to save old, never worn pieces from landfill. As part of JetBlue’s uniform recycling program overstocked uniforms were put to use in a smart way.
“The Big Apple is the fashion capital. As New York’s Hometown Airline, our new bag collection will give stylish New Yorkers, and those who simply want a piece of JetBlue history, an eco-friendly fashionable option,” said Sophia Mendelsohn, head of sustainability, JetBlue. “When we launched our new uniforms, it was important to us to keep the fabric from the old and unworn uniforms out of landfills by putting them to good use. So, we reached out to Manhattan Portage and put our heads together and came up with a new way to combine fashion and travel with responsibility. JetBlue and Manhattan Portage are based in New York, so we both wanted to have a little fun and showcase our love for our hometown.”
This recycled bag collection was designed and produced by Manhattan Portage, which was founded in 1983 in New York. Uniforms from various JetBlue functions were broken down and repurposed into a fully functional (and stylish) limited edition bag collection for men and women. Each bag not only saves valuable textiles from landfills, it holds unique value and has its own character, as its design elements were once worn by some of the most unique crewmembers in the airline industry.
Lauren Hoffman, from Manhattan Portage’s Sales and Marketing department, said, “By incorporating the technical aspects including high visibility reflective prints of the JetBlue ground operations crewmember uniform pieces and the aesthetics of the inflight crew uniform pieces such as the signature pilot wings, we were able to come up with a series of durable bags that are as fun and unique as JetBlue.”
Manhattan Portage’s iconic red label emblazoned with an outline of New York’s famous skyline is widely recognized in over 40 different countries. This landmark logo appears on several collections of bags and accessories available in a wide range of styles, fabrics and prices, including the new JetBlue collection.
JetBlue is known for its unique culture and award-winning service as well as its environmentally friendly focus. When introducing its first new uniforms in the airline’s history, JetBlue made sure that both its overstocked, unworn and previously worn uniforms were put to good use after they’d served their initial purpose. In 2014, when JetBlue switched to its new uniforms, the airline donated more than 18.5 tons of worn used uniforms, clothing and fabric to several non-profit partners including Planet Aid, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that collects and recycles worn clothing and shoes and, Loomstate, an end-to-end sustainable fashion house. Planet Aid is selling the clothing with the proceeds supporting health, agricultural, educational, and environmental programs in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates, in 2010 Americans rid their closets of more than 13 million tons of textiles, yet only 15 percent of that clothing was recycled or donated. In one year, more than 11 million tons of textiles were dumped in landfills within the United States alone. Decomposing clothing releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to climate change. There are also dyes and chemicals in clothing and shoes that can seep into the soil, contaminating water used to bathe and drink as well as grow food.

Joseph Abboud Opens First Store In New York City
NEW YORK, — Joseph Abboud announces the opening of its Flagship Store, located at 424 Madison Avenue in New York City, the first under the umbrella of Men’s Wearhouse, Inc. The 4,300 square foot location was designed and styled collaboratively by Jeffrey Hutchison & Associates and Joseph Abboud, and is reminiscent of London’s Savile Row.
“It’s our commitment to dress men in the finest quality designer menswear in America so it was only natural to support the Joseph Abboud brand with its own retail store and expand that product offering,” said Doug Ewert, Men’s Wearhouse CEO. “Joseph Abboud sets a high standard of affordable luxury offering collections that have style, quality and enduring value. We’re excited to open the flagship store in Manhattan and believe customers will appreciate both the environment and the merchandise within it.”
The store encompasses the full breadth of Abboud’s designer collection including tailored clothing made of fine Italian fabrics, sportswear, outerwear, dress furnishings, footwear, Joseph Abboud Custom, and the new Joseph Abboud fragrance. This merchandise is also available online at www.JosephAbboud.com.
Highlights of the Spring/Summer 2015 collection include beautiful linen suits, textured twill sport coats, lightweight cotton sportswear jackets, and cable knit cotton/linen blend sweaters. Prices for suiting starts at $795, $495 for sport coats, $795 for tuxedos, $595 for outerwear, $295 for shoes and $150 for dress shirts. Joseph Abboud Custom ranges from $795 to $1,095 for suits and tuxedos and $595 to $895 for sport coats.
“The location of the store is in the heart of Midtown, which is quickly becoming a menswear shopping destination,” said Joseph Abboud, Chief Creative Director of Men’s Wearhouse, Inc. “Inspired by London’s Savile Row, I wanted to bring an American curated experience for men to Madison Avenue… a place where they cannot only shop but explore.”
The store features architectural details that complement the luxurious quality of the merchandise. Mixtures of menswear textile patterns in shades of sepia have been used throughout the store to complement Abboud’s collections. Decorative elements are eclectic with a mixture of vintage, classic and modern pieces such as original hand-drawn charcoal fashion illustrations by renowned artist Bill Rancitelli and a vintage terracotta bust, found by Abboud in a local antique shop in Connecticut. The store has an impressive fifteen foot ivory Venetian plaster vaulted ceiling, lit with brass and hand blown glass chandeliers. Abboud designed custom-made wing chairs; upholstered in his own gray chalk-stripe fabric and leather, trimmed with brass nail heads. Shoes are displayed on a striking art-deco inspired table made of tapered bronze with a deep chocolate shagreen top.
An iron staircase leads up to the Joseph Abboud Custom clothing experience, one of the highlights of the store. At the top of the mezzanine level, customers encounter a wall of over 250 of the finest Italian fabrics on oversized swatches displayed on specially-made bronze hooks. A custom specialist will help customers choose from options including suit silhouette, fabric, lining, pick stitching and functioning button holes.
Custom and tailored clothing is made in America by dedicated craftspeople at the Joseph Abboud factory in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The factory has over 700 employees, making 1,200 suits per day, and supports the Joseph Abboud brand reputation for high quality, great value, and superior design.
About Joseph Abboud
Since the age of sixteen, Joseph Abboud has been passionate about fashion. He started his career in menswear at Louis of Boston and later Polo Ralph Lauren. Abboud joined Men’s Wearhouse (NYSE: MW) as its Chief Creative Director in December 2012. Abboud was reunited with his namesake brand in August 2013 when Men’s Wearhouse acquired JA Holding Inc., the parent company of the celebrated American clothing brand, Joseph Abboud. Abboud re-launched his label, reestablishing the brand as a sophisticated modern-American lifestyle collection. The Joseph Abboud designer collection launched in October 2014 on JosephAbboud.com and is now available at the Joseph Abboud Flagship Store in New York City.

P&G Unveils Latest Innovations in Fabric Care Based on Cognitive Science
NEW YORK–The worlds of fabric and fashion came together in various dimensions for the senses today as P&G Fabric Care exclusively revealed how it is evolving to meet multi-sensorial fashion trends and solve the challenge of maintaining clothing beauty and longevity for its consumers. Hosted by style expert George Kotsiopoulos, the second-annual P&G Future Fabrics event in New York City brought together members of the media and influential guests from the fashion, home and lifestyle communities to experience first-hand the latest advances in fabrics and insight into how our own unconscious decisions affect our clothing perceptions.
The event consisted of presentations by a prestigious mix of fashion, fabrics and human psychology experts and culminated with a reveal of the next stage of the Washable Fashion initiative in a runway show cultivated by renowned fashion designer Giles Deacon. This was the second-annual P&G Future Fabric event in NYC, preceded by an event for global media that took place in Berlin last November.
P&G Fabric Care’s brands Tide® and Downy® will now have a stronger focus on macro fashion and fabric trends to ensure that the proprietary technology within its products can clean, protect and enhance the clothes consumers wear and love. Understanding that consumers are influenced by multi-sensorial (look, feel and smell) properties of fabrics, P&G’s Fiber Scientists will use the cognitive science of perception to analyze why consumers make their fashion and style choices.
Advancing P&G’s unique 3-Step FiberSCIENCE approach to prolong and improve the sensorial properties of clothes
“Our closets are full of clothes, yet 80 percent of the time, we wear only 20 percent of them,” said Margarita Bahrikeeton, Research Fellow for P&G Fabric Care. “Looking at that the other way round, why are 80 percent of the clothes we at one time loved left unworn in the closet?”
P&G is looking at Fabric Care from a new angle to find out the answer – breaking new ground by applying the latest research in the cognitive science of human perception to understand WHY consumers fall out of love with their wardrobe and how our relationship with clothes changes over time. By applying this knowledge to their FiberSCIENCE expertise, they strive to redefine what Fabric Care means for consumers and their clothes. Bahrikeeton also revealed that P&G Fiber Scientists are introducing new advances in the 3-Step FiberSCIENCE approach; to Clean, Protect and Enhance, which focus on prolonging and improving the multi-sensorial fabric properties that influence people’s perception of their clothes: the look, the feel and the scent.
The life cycle of our clothes is often cut short because these qualities are not cared for properly. Combining this cognitive knowledge with an unrivalled expertise of the fiber aging process, P&G is bringing a new approach to fabric care innovation (for brands like Tide and Downy) to maintain all the sensorial attributes of clothes and improve their quality of life.
Cognitive Science meets Fashion and Fabrics
P&G Future Fabrics’ official partner and respected fabric trends forecaster Première Vision opened with a presentation given by Associate Fashion Director Sabine Le Chatelier on fashion as a multi-sensorial experience, which illustrated how fabrics are more than visual – an alchemy of look, feel and handle or behavior. Also revealed was the current industry trends in textile and fabric innovation where imagination and technology are combining to produce exciting sensorial fashions that are also washable, easy to care for and sustainable.
This fashion trend toward the multi-sensorial was further explored by a presentation from leading Cognitive Psychologist Dr. Lawrence Rosenblum who revealed that the last years of research in perceptual psychology has given rise to a “multi-sensory revolution,” showing that our senses are always influencing one another and impacting our preferences and moods much more than we realize – often in ways in which we are not even aware. Dr. Rosenblum’s collaboration with P&G demonstrates how the myriad of cross-sensory influences on our experiences with our fashions – what you see, how it feels to touch, what your nose smells – impact the relationship we have with clothes and our final decision on what to wear.
Exclusive machine-washable collection for P&G Fabric Care by renowned fashion designer Giles Deacon unveiled
In a special fashion show at P&G Future Fabrics, runway models showcased 14 machine-washable looks exclusively designed by P&G Fabric Care’s Global Fashion Consultant Giles Deacon for Tide and Downy.
“High fashion shouldn’t mean high maintenance,” said Deacon. “When I design clothes, I want them to last, which is why the fiber science innovation led by P&G is so important to the longevity of fabric. After a year of working with P&G Fabric Care, I have been inspired by what Tide and Downy can do to ensure that clothes remain beautiful long after they were designed.”
“For this new collection, I was inspired by the macro-trend of multi-sensorial fashions and fabrics,” Deacon added. “Aware that both Tide and Downy have the capability to preserve and protect these fashions, I set about creating designs that bring the best of each brand to life. For Tide, it was all about making lasting first impressions, color, confidence and impact. For Downy, I focused on giving people the confidence to wear an item all day and feel as great in it in the evening as they did when they first put it on in the morning.”
The P&G vision
“P&G Fabric Care has had innovation at its heart for more than 60 years, and today is no different,” said Shailesh Jejurikar, President, P&G Fabric Care North America and Corporate New Business Development. “In fact, it’s more important than ever. In a world of new and ever-developing fabrics and heightened consumer expectation, we are taking action. We are not just cleaning clothes, we are protecting and enhancing them.”
“Born out of the challenge to maintain the beauty and performance of clothes, our mission is to redefine and elevate what cleaning and caring for clothes means,” added Jejurikar. “We are doing this by engaging more closely with fashion and fabric partners, like Première Vision and continuing our tradition of leadership in consumer understanding by engaging with cognitive psychology expert Dr. Lawrence Rosenblum to better understand how the sensorial attributes of garments plays into our fashion choices. We are also looking to the fashion and fabric trends which are coming down the catwalks to inspire the development of new fabric care technologies to support these future fabrics.
“It is these macro trends and the deep dive into the mind-body connection that have been guiding our most recent product innovations. This is an exciting time in a space full of opportunities for us to build meaningful partnerships and bring innovation to the market, and I look forward to advancing fashion and fabric care together,” Jejurikar added.
Tide, innovating for 60+ years, is redefining what fabric care and cleaning means
Responding to the trends in sensorial fashion and the unconscious multi-sensory influences behind human perception, Tide’s 3-step FiberSCIENCE approach – to clean, protect and enhance – acts on the fibers, not just stains, to maintain the sensorial qualities (look, feel and scent) of fabrics that impact people’s relationship with their clothes. Tide’s formulas help protect and improve the look of clothes via a process of fiber purification and preservation, which removes and prevents impurities from re-depositing back on fibers. This can cause clothes to appear dull and dingy and influence people’s emotions and preference.
Tide also helps protect the feel of clothes through FiberSCIENCE technologies specialized in optimizing the wash conditions to help protect fiber integrity and preserve that “like-new” feel. Tide FiberSCIENCE experts also focus on improving the cognitive-emotional connection to clothes thanks to a combination of unique fresh scent technologies and impeccable cleaning against invisible stains that can cause odor.
Downy – fiber protection and long-lasting freshness for clothes that look and feel like new for longer
Downy scientists have applied the latest learning in P&G FiberSCIENCE and cognitive science to protect and enhance the sensorial attributes of clothes (their look, feel and scent) at a fiber level. By understanding what drives people’s perceptions of their fashion, Downy’s formulation helps preserve the texture and construction of clothes and provides an uplifting perfume experience. Inspired by the link between people’s emotions and scent, Downy enhances garments and moods with sophisticated scent technology and perfume oils that provide an irresistible freshness experience and long-lasting fragrance throughout the day.
Furthermore, Downy penetrates in the layers of fabrics to condition the fibers and reduce friction between fabrics during the wash and day-to-day wear. This helps minimize the chances of damage to the texture of fabrics and premature aging of clothes. When you use Downy to enhance the fragrance, feel and life of your fashion pieces – both high and low – you can upgrade your wardrobe to the next level. When your clothes look great, feel soft, and smell amazing – it’s the difference between “just an outfit” and “next level fashion.”

Old Spice Partners With Second Chance Toys And Names Actor Nolan Gould and Isaiah Mustafa as HoliSPRAY Ambassadors
CINCINNATI- Paying homage to the brand’s new “Dadsong” holiday TV spot, the nationwide used toy drive rewards acts of kindness with the gift of manhood (Old Spice Re-fresh Body Spray).
Old Spice partners with Second Chance Toys and names actor Nolan Gould and Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa as HoliSPRAY Toy Donation Exchange Ambassadors for Dec. 10 collection event in Los Angeles.
Bringing attention to the massive quantities of boxed up children’s toys in garages and attics around the country, Old Spice today launched a first-of-its-kind, phil-MAN-thropic holiday toy donation program with non-profit Second Chance Toys, an organization dedicated to keeping plastic toys out of landfills by donating them to children in need throughout local communities in the U.S. The inaugural Old Spice HoliSPRAY Toy Donation Exchange, which runs from Dec. 3 through Dec. 15, encourages moms and dads to donate their children’s gently used plastic toys in exchange for Old Spice Re-fresh Body Spray, the gift that keeps on giving one spray at a time.
Inspired by the hilarious moment from the new Old Spice “Dadsong” (:60) TV ad when the dad runs over his son’s childhood toys with a riding lawnmower, signifying his boy’s entry into manhood, the Old Spice HoliSPRAY Exchange is designed to rescue all of those used dump trucks and fire engines to bring joy to the lives of disadvantaged children during the holidays.
“We’re excited to partner with Second Chance Toys and bring attention to a cause that is so important to helping today’s youth,” said John Sebastian, Old Spice Brand Director at Procter & Gamble. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to illustrate our message about a boy’s transition to manhood than with a toy drive that rewards a simple act of kindness with the gift of manhood – Old Spice Re-fresh Body Spray.”
According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, nearly 14 million children in the U.S. – 22 percent of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level. This has been a driving force behind Second Change Toys since the organization was established in 2006.
“Toys provide children with laughter, fun and exploration of the world and are especially needed this time of year,” said Bronna Lipton, Executive Director of Second Chance Toys. “We’re thrilled to work with Old Spice on this particular program, as we’re both dedicated to providing young guys the right tools to help them grow up and eventually become confident young men. We can’t think of a better way to bring holiday smiles to kids and grown-ups of all ages.”
HoliSPRAY Toy Donation Event at Hollywood High
To help drive awareness and participation for the program, Old Spice has recruited actor Nolan Gould and Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa to act as HoliSPRAY Toy Donation Exchange Ambassadors. On Dec. 10, Gould and Mustafa will host a toy collection event at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, which will serve as one of many toy collection locations across the U.S. participating in the program.
To find Old Spice HoliSPRAY Toy Exchange locations, please visit www.secondchancetoys.org/corporate-sponsorships/oldspice. Old Spice HoliSPRAY Toy Exchange Ambassadors received an Old Spice t-shirt and a variety of Old Spice products, including Re-fresh Body Spray, to hand out in exchange for used toy donations. For those interested in becoming a future toy collector, the program’s Getting Started Kit can be found on the Second Chance Toys website, including a step-by-step guide on rescuing, cleaning and donating toys through local organizations that serve children in communities across the country.
