Entertainment And Sports Industry: Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Las Vegas Sands, Live Nation Entertainment, the New York Yankees, the Smithsonian Institution, and Walt Disney etc.
INDUSTRY OVERVIEW:
The U.S. media and entertainment (M&E) industry is the largest in the world. At $717 billion, it represents a third of the global M&E industry, and it includes motion pictures, television programs and commercials, streaming content, music and audio recordings, broadcast, radio, book publishing, video games, and ancillary services and products. The U.S. industry is expected to reach more than $825 billion by 2023, according to the 2018-2023 Entertainment & Media Outlook by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
Filmed Entertainment (Motion Pictures, Television, and Video)
The U.S. filmed entertainment industry encompasses films, movie theaters, TV subscriptions and electronic home video production, and distribution and consumption. Box office receipts are expected to surpass $11 billion in 2019 (this figure includes projected cinema advertising earnings of $991 million). TV and home video earnings are expected to reach $96 billion in 2019. Due to the rapid expansion of streaming video on demand (SVOD), television subscriptions are expected to experience a slight decline (to $91 billion) through 2019.
Box office numbers are expected to grow as theaters adopt digital screens, increase ticket prices, diversify concession options, offer consumer products such as movie or brand related merchandise, and offer membership discounts to attract viewership. Traditionally the film industry consisted of multinational umbrella corporations, major studios, and independent studios or “indies.” Today, multi-channel networks engage in the filmed entertainment sector and SVOD platforms are major drivers in the filmed entertainment sector.
Drawing on formidable strengths, the U.S. film industry has a proven ability to produce films that generate hundreds of millions of dollars, including revenues from distribution across strong domestic and international networks. Success in the industry is based on creativity and financing, and the industry is largely self-regulated. The U.S. market has a large talent pool of writers, actors, producers, directors and technical experts, and is home to a variety of film crews, post-production firms, backdrops, and infrastructure to support production. U.S. filmmakers also receive critical protections for their intellectual property.
Many of the leading motion picture studios are part of larger media conglomerates that often include television, video and streaming services, music services, newspaper, cable and magazine segments. The U.S. filmed entertainment sector enjoyed a trade surplus of $10.3 billion in 2016 (latest available data), which was roughly 4 percent of the total U.S. private sector services trade surplus that year.
The industry offers attractive possibilities for international companies, both large and small, and provides film production tax incentives. With the shift toward digital production and distribution, foreign firms are continually seeking out U.S. digital and animation expertise and new formats.
Music
The U.S. recorded music industry (including concerts and touring) grew to $22 billion in 2019. Collectively, it is the largest global music market. Aside from contracting physical music sales, all segments of recorded music are up, including digital, streaming, and sync licensing. Since overtaking physical music sales in 2014, digital sales have helped the music industry adapt to a fast-changing entertainment landscape (royalties are expected to reach $1.1 billion in 2019). Live and recorded music sales are rising, and digitally recorded music is expected to grow just under $1 billion in 2019. Many companies in the industry have diversified, signing sync deals with vertical businesses for TV ads, in-flight entertainment, satellite radio, restaurants, touring, live entertainment, and merchandise. The United States also has the world’s largest performance rights market and earns half of global sync revenues.
Digital technologies have revolutionized the music industry by creating high quality, low-cost recording technologies and digital distribution, along with the proliferation of devices to download and listen to music. Future industry growth is likely to come from diversified services as they capitalize on vertical business opportunities to license brand name products and services, packaging consumer experiences around touring and live music, bundling music services with other online content services and more. Streaming services will continue to grow and offer more personalized services for consumers. The consumer has more power to influence digital entertainment industries than ever before.
Video Games
The U.S. gaming industry accounts for a significant amount of the M&E industry, and revenues are expected to reach nearly $26 billion in 2019. Today’s consumers have access to multiple devices for gaming, including PCs, mobile phones, digital or physical consoles, and tablets. The sector is comprised of: physical, digital, and online games; mobile apps; and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). Electronic sports, also known as “eSports” or “e-sports”, includes professional gaming, in which players compete before a live audience, and the industry is growing quickly: $281 billion in 2019, more than double its size in 2016. In 2019, eSport media rights earnings will have quadrupled to $69 million in that same period. (NOTE: eSports earnings data are currently available for about ten key markets worldwide).
The industry is constantly innovating and bringing new applications to market. VR is the use of digital technology to replace reality with a complete and realistic, immersive simulation, while AR is interaction with computer-generated content overlaid with the “real world”. Using VR/AR, U.S. developers and scientists are producing cutting-edge solutions in healthcare, education, online shopping, and entertainment. VR gaming has grown more than 14 percent since 2018.
SPORTS
Over the past 20 or 30 years, the major trend in sports has been the tremendous growth in revenues, primed by televised broadcasting of games. This innovation led first to increased advertising sales, then to sponsorships, and then to stadium naming rights. Player endorsements provide a human (or superhuman) face to these sports-marketing efforts. Over time, teams and leagues have become much more business-minded, and revenues have increased many times over. This transformation has fueled the need for business people to wheel and deal, and squeeze as much money out of every sporting event or deal as possible.
However, sports consumers (whoops, make that “fans”) are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the transformation of sports into a money-making machine, one that has encouraged player hubris, corporate intrusion, and a general disregard for the fans. Older fans have voted with their, um, backsides, by keeping them at home rather than seating them in stadiums. And younger people have moved toward “action” sports more to their liking, such as snowboarding and BMX, as these are exactly the kinds of things they like to do themselves.
As consumers retreat, corporate sponsors are forced to be more selective in their campaigns, usually by targeting as closely as possible the demographic they are after. They are also demanding more from sponsorship deals. Valuation services is a growing segment of sponsorship, since it attempts to quantify and evaluate the return on investment of any such deal.
Companies in this industry sector produce or promote live entertainment and other events, operate amusement and leisure activity facilities, or preserve and exhibit objects and sites of historical or cultural significance. Major companies and organizations include Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Las Vegas Sands, Live Nation Entertainment, the New York Yankees, the Smithsonian Institution, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (all US-based); as well as Cirque du Soleil (Canada); Galaxy Entertainment (Hong Kong); IGT, Merlin Entertainments, and William Hill (all based in the UK); the Louvre (France); and Real Madrid (Spain).
The global recreation market is forecast to grow to more than $2 trillion in 2027 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7%, according to The Business Research Company.
The US arts, entertainment, and recreation sector includes about 140,000 establishments (single-location companies and units of multi-location companies) with combined annual revenue of about $265 billion.

DICK’S Sporting Goods Announces Partnership with Team USA and
the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games
As an Official Supporter, DICK’S plans to bring customers closer to the Olympic and Paralympic Games by showing their support in stores across the country, and through original storytelling, advertising and social content that feature athletes and the iconic Team USA brand. While DICK’S will continue selling an exceptional array of Team USA licensed products, this deal unlocks an opportunity for the brand to co-create exclusive LA28-branded gear with LA28 licensees for sale through DICK’S in-store and online.
The partnership will also include travel and training apparel, using DICK’S owned brands, for 11 Team USA national governing bodies, beginning with USA Canoe/Kayak this summer.
“We are thrilled to be a part of Team USA’s journey for years to come and are looking forward to welcoming the Summer Games back to the U.S. for the first time in more than 30 years in Los Angeles,” said Mark Rooks, VP Creative, Sponsorships and Entertainment at DICK’S Sporting Goods. “As the Official Sporting Goods Retail Provider of LA28, we are exploring ways to engage the community, celebrate with fans across the country and further our investment in youth sports.”
“We couldn’t be happier to have DICK’S Sporting Goods back in the Olympic and Paralympic family,” said Chris Pepe, Chief Commercial Officer at United States Olympic and Paralympic Properties (USOPP). “LA28 is reimagining the way the Games serve the world, and sport is at the core of that. Additionally, DICK’s ongoing involvement in youth sports will inspire future athletes across the world, during and well after the Games conclude.”
To celebrate this partnership and pinnacle moment in sport, DICK’S also released a new marketing campaign titled, Big Moments. Through a :30 compilation of user generated sports content, Big Moments showcases that the biggest moments in sports don’t just happen in sold-out arenas, on national TV, or with a world record on the line; they happen every day in youth sports, anywhere and everywhere people play, and have a powerful impact on young athletes’ lives. Big Moments is an extension of DICK’S Sports Change Lives campaign which launched in March 2023.
“For young athletes, seemingly small moments can be extraordinary – whether it’s making the team, hitting a game winning shot, or scoring your very first goal,” said Kate Fedishen, VP Marketing at DICK’S Sporting Goods. “With our Big Moments campaign, we are taking these joyful, triumphant, real-world stories in youth sports and giving them the spotlight they deserve on the world’s biggest stage for sports.”
Today, Big Moments started running across social and streaming services, and will make its broadcast premiere during the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on NBC. The campaign will continue to run across NBC platforms throughout the remainder of the Games.
As part of the campaign, DICK’S Sporting Goods is asking fans to share their biggest sports moments on social, tagging @dickssportinggoods and using #BigMomentsEveryDay for an opportunity to be featured on the brand’s social channels. To further amplify this content, DICK’S is tapping Gabby Douglas, Tony Hawk, Dominique Dawes, Ezra Frech and more to share their own biggest moments and interact with fans.
Legends, a global premium experiences company, helped source the partnership between DICK’S Sporting Goods and LA28.

A2IM and IMPALA Launch Carbon Calculator Project For the U.S., Supported by Merlin
New York, NY – Independent trade associations, A2IM (USA) and IMPALA (Europe) in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle are launching a free one-year pilot project of IMPALA’s Carbon Calculator in the U.S. with the support of Merlin. This is the first step towards rolling out the tool in the world’s biggest music market, so the sector can measure and reduce carbon footprints in as coordinated a way as possible.
The project includes key North American labels, who will provide input on any developments needed to the tool for a full roll-out, as well as providing a pathway for future calculator adaptations in other key territories.
Already used by labels with U.S. businesses, the calculator helps companies report in a standardized way by scopes, in line with GHG protocol and Race to Zero/SBTi commitments. The calculator now displays the footprint in scopes 1,2 and 3 and it also allows labels to report on other impacts and actions beyond carbon.
Thanks to Merlin’s support, the project launched during this year’s Indie Week with participation from a group of A2IM members of different sizes. The session was delivered by a representative of IMPALA and Julie’s Bicycle. This event was an opportunity to gather interested companies, build capacity within the community and provide tailored support to the companies selected for the pilot project.
The project will also include workshops for A2IM members, serving as a platform to gather feedback, address potential questions, and ensure a smooth transition for users. 1-on-1 meetings between the developer team and company representatives will be available to guide companies in need of extra support.
IMPALA launched its Carbon Calculator in April 2022, in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle. The calculator is based on Julie’s Bicycle Creative Climate Tools, tailored specifically to meet the needs of independent record companies with IMPALA. The first membership Carbon Calculator report was released in 2023, with the second one in the pipeline.
Dr. Richard Burgess, President & CEO of A2IM commented: “We are very excited that the U.S. is the first territory in the internationalization of IMPALA’s Carbon Calculator. Thanks to Merlin‘s support, our members will be able to shape the tool for the U.S. market and play a key role in the expansion of its use.”
Karla Rogozar, Sustainability Lead, IMPALA added: “To help standardise the sector’s approach across regions, it’s important to have these projects in key markets. Merlin’s support is vital to facilitate internationalization of the IMPALA calculator.”
Jeremy Sirota, CEO of Merlin continued: “Our path towards a more sustainable future involves all of us working together. That’s why we are pleased to support internationalising the IMPALA Carbon Calculator. We are excited to see its roll-out in the U.S. to help more independents build that future together.”
Chiara Badiali, Music Lead, Julie’s Bicycle concluded: “This pilot is an invaluable opportunity to build new shared understanding and pathways between the European and US independent music companies, because meeting the climate crisis head-on means coming together, learning from and with each other, and taking action collectively.”
This project represents the first step towards internationalization and broader collaboration in the sector. IMPALA invites other interested parties to reach out and work together on this item.

Warner Bros. Discovery Announces ‘Olli,’ New First-Party Data Platform Powering Converged Audience Solutions
Warner Bros. Discovery (Nasdaq: WBD) today announced the launch of Olli, its proprietary first-party data platform powering the next generation of advanced advertising solutions for partners. By fusing data, audience intelligence and ad tech solutions, Olli allows for seamless campaign planning, activation and measurement across WBD’s entire portfolio of premium content and brands.
Olli powers WBD’s new, converged Data-Driven Video offering, which can identify one audience across all endpoints, creating the most efficient and precise way to maximize reach, improve engagement and mitigate waste. Enhanced by VideoAmp to further increase campaign efficiency, Data-Driven Video allows clients to exclude heavy linear TV viewers early in the planning process, and then redistribute the focus to balance the target audience across WBD’s linear and digital platforms to ensure optimized reach and frequency. Additional efficiencies include in-flight optimizations that would further reduce unneeded exposures across the target audience. This approach simplifies media planning and delivers impactful audience solutions to audiences to inform smarter investments and enhanced measurement data.
WBD is currently partnering with OMG, RPA and Wayfair, among others, on providing Data-Driven Video solutions. IPG Mediabrands will begin testing in the third quarter of this year.
“With the introduction of Olli and Data-Driven Video, Warner Bros. Discovery offers a transformative approach to how media strategies are crafted and executed. Our goal is to ensure that every connection between brand and audience is reached in the most efficient and effective way across our vast expanse of digital and traditional platforms,” said Ryan Gould, Head of Digital Ad Sales, Warner Bros. Discovery. “We’ve already seen early success with this offering, and we look forward to bringing it to the wider marketplace working with marketers looking to activate advanced audience segments to achieve their advertising, sales and marketing objectives.”
With Olli, WBD can enhance the following pillars throughout a client’s media strategy:
Data and Identity: Olli’s comprehensive audience graph, derived from direct consumer relationships from over 100 million households and 700 million devices across the U.S., offers in-depth insights into user behaviors and preferences. This enables more effective audience identification, leading to stronger engagement and strategy development. Leveraging first-party data from active users, Olli constructs detailed audience profiles, ensuring precise first-party targeting and enhanced campaign performance.
Activation and Automation: Olli streamlines WBD ad tech processes with unified planning across the portfolio, integrating marketer data with WBD’s robust first-party audience library, delivering unmatched targeting fidelity and campaign relevance with increased speed to market and cost efficiency. Leveraging Data Clean Room solutions from Snowflake, Olli enhances privacy compliance and data security that are crucial for today’s digital advertising environment.
Insights and Measurement: Olli arms WBD with actionable ad analytics and industry-leading measurement strategies designed to prove efficacy and attribution throughout the consumer journey. With planned fully integrated measurement partners such as ABCS Insights and LoopMe, Olli provides insight and measurement that is more accurate and actionable for partners than ever before.

Nike Ignites New Frontier of Innovation With 40 Elite Athletes in Unforgettable Experience in Paris
The company that brought you Air Max, the Jumpman and Breaking2 is making history again. Leveraging its proprietary Nike Air; its world-class and unmatched roster of athletes; and its passion for combining creativity, irreverence and bold exploration, Nike hosted “Nike On Air,” an exhibition and live performance at the Palais Brongniart in Paris that marked the final countdown to the biggest stage in sport.
Nike is the brand of athletes
The Nike On Air event was occasion to unveil the footwear and apparel that the brand’s athletes will wear this summer — and it was also a moment to celebrate the hard work and technology that brought it all to life. This was conveyed through an immersive and sensorial experience that underscored three truths: Nike is the brand of athletes, its innovations continue to lead the sports industry, and its proprietary Air technology uniquely enables the company to serve all athletes with unrivaled performance product.
The experience began outside the Palais Brongniart, where, since April 3, all Parisians were invited to view and interact with colossal AR-enabled statues of six titans of sport, poised in midair and glowing in signature Nike orange: Nike athletes LeBron James, Alexia Putellas, Bebe Vio, Kylian Mbappe, Sha’Carri Richardson and Victor Wembanyama. Each statue was between 8 and 11 meters high and had an augmented-reality interface that unlocked the athletes in action and their Air-powered footwear. Their AR heroics communicated their relationship with Nike Air, the shoes that energize them and ultimately position them as timeless athletes among us.
Nike innovations lead the sports industry
Inside the Palais, guests walked through gallery-style rooms that evoked the sounds, sights and feelings of the rich history and limitless future of Nike Air — its genealogy, culture and reinvention — and highlighted the company’s product innovations in running, basketball, global football, skate, breakdancing and lifestyle. Here, attendees could see a first look at the 2024 national uniforms and kits athletes will wear on the fields of play in Paris this summer. Nike is proud to partner with more than 100 federations across team and individual sports, as well as support hundreds of individual athletes who will compete in the games. The company also unveiled previews of the captivating Air products to come, including the sculpted Air unit in the new Pegasus Premium, Nike’s biggest breakthrough in Air since its revolutionary VaporMax line and Alphafly super-shoe system of speed. Contoured to the natural profile of the foot, the sculpted Air Zoom unit in the Pegasus Premium carries a runner’s power through their transition from heel to toe, giving a super-shoe-like ride to the everyday runner.
Nike’s proprietary Air technology is its differentiator
Complementing the Air immersion rooms was the Nike On Air performance. Forty elite athletes from around the world joined Nike to unveil the latest Nike Air footwear and team kits for the summer and present the future of athlete co-creation with iconic and visionary looks that highlighted their self-expression and incredible athleticism.
In the finale of the show, 13 athletes declared their visions of the future of Air through radical AI-explored, 3D-printed, one-of-one footwear that Nike’s innovation teams helped bring to life in a project called A.I.R. — Athlete-Imagined Revolution.
“These groundbreaking Nike Air designs forecast the future of performance footwear, co-created to the exact specification of championship athletes,” says Heidi O’Neill, NIKE, Inc. President, Consumer, Product & Brand. “At the heart of all we do is the athlete. We exist to push boundaries and take risks on their behalf. This summer, the difference-maker is the massive energy return of Nike Air — what you’ll see athletes wear on the road, court, pitch and track. A multiyear cycle of Nike innovation is upon us, and here in Paris, we’ve shown only the beginning of what’s to come.”
The event represented 46 years of research and innovation of Nike Air. Since Air debuted in performance product in 1978, Nike innovation and design teams have consistently found new tools and methods to enhance what it can do. Air is the window into Nike; it represents the company’s constant reinvention and never-ending progress.
That progress is what Nike On Air signaled for this summer and beyond. As shown by A.I.R., for Nike, the best is always yet to come. With expanding digital capabilities and the expertise, creativity and passion of Nike teams, the company is giving all athletes more support, more choice and more inspiration than ever to make their dreams real.
As it always has, Nike Air flows in one direction — toward the new frontier of innovation.

NMPA Announces Top Gold & Platinum Songwriters and Certifications for First Quarter of 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. –The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) Gold & Platinum Program today announced the top songwriters for the first quarter of 2023 including the top artist-songwriter and top non-performing songwriter for the period. During January, February and March, 1,736 Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum certifications were awarded.
Luke Combs was the top artist-songwriter overall with 26 certifications including the 9X Multi-Platinum Beautiful Crazy, the 8X Multi-Platinum Hurricane and the 4X Multi-Platinum Forever After All, all published by Big Machine. He is now published by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG).
The top non-performing songwriter was Ray Fulcher who scored 12 certifications for songs including When It Rains It Pours, Does to Me and Reasons, which are published by Sony Music Publishing. He is published by UMPG and River House/Sony Music Publishing.
Luke Combs said, “Man, kind of speechless to be honest. All of the credit goes to my fans. They buy and stream the songs and albums, so none of this happens without them. This is honestly an award that should have their names on it. Huge thank you to them and everyone else who made this happen.”
Ray Fulcher added, “Pretty unreal to be included in this group, much less to be at the top for any period of time. Thanks to country music fans and supporters for listening to these songs and believing in the music. I’m going to keep writing songs from the heart, and hopefully, y’all keep listening. Thanks!”
NMPA President & CEO David Israelite congratulated the honorees saying, “The first quarter of this year was a big moment for country music. Fueled by the success of Luke and Ray, we saw the growth of country dominate the Gold & Platinum certifications. Huge congratulations to Luke Combs for consistently creating timeless music, and to Ray for working with him on such enduring, massive songs.”
About the NMPA G&P Program:
NMPA’s Gold & Platinum Program, in partnership with RIAA’s Gold & Platinum Program, identifies and honors the songwriters behind today’s biggest hits. NMPA confirms songwriters with their music publishers to ensure all appropriate songwriters are recognized for their contribution to an RIAA certified single. Certifications count both sales and on-demand streams towards gold (500K), platinum (1M) and multi-platinum (2M+) thresholds. Thousands of songwriters have been certified since NMPA’s program began in 2007. For more information and to view our Gold & Platinum database, visit www.nmpa.org/gold-platinum-program/.

While the adults in Tom’s life certainly mean well, they just can’t manage to lead by example.

FIFA And WHO Collaborate On Health Through Sports
Geneva – FIFA and WHO have agreed to extend their collaboration and to continue to use the power of football to promote healthy lifestyles and equal access to health services worldwide.
During the Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and FIFA President Gianni Infantino signed a four-year extension to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which has been in place since 4 October 2019.
“Health and football are perfect teammates. Promoting healthy lifestyles, safe stadiums and the physical and mental benefits of physical activity are among the many health goals WHO is proud to keep scoring with FIFA for the next four years,” said Dr Tedros. “WHO’s partnership with FIFA has already succeeded to share evidence-based messages to help people of all ages lead healthier and safer lives through the power of football and sport. WHO looks forward to continuing this journey.”
“We are proud to have signed and renewed the Memorandum of Understanding with the World Health Organization – we are proud to continue our relationship to pass important physical and mental health messages through our global football audience,” Gianni Infantino said. “I extend my gratitude to Dr Tedros, to his wonderful team, to everyone that helps in the healthcare sector – from doctors to nurses to healthcare professionals and health ministers – and to everyone who contributes to make our lives better.”
Reflecting on the past four years, he added: “Both Dr Tedros and I felt that in a world that is more and more divided, maybe if the World Health Organization and FIFA join forces, we can achieve something, we can have even just a little impact to make our lives a little bit better. Since 2019, we have worked together with our colleagues at the World Health Organization to try to use the impact of football, that helps drive health for one and all.”
During the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, FIFA and WHO launched the Football Unites the World campaign. Supported by Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Hassan Al-Haydos, Karim Benzema, Lucy Bronze, Giulia Gwinn, Kaká, Robert Lewandowski, Carli Lloyd, Édouard Mendy and Emmanuel Petit as well as by two of the WHO’s Goodwill Ambassadors for Sport and Health, namely Alisson Becker and Didier Drogba, it illustrated football’s unrivalled ability to bring people together.
The support of the Qatar Ministry of Public Health, FIFA and WHO collaborated on a number of initiatives to promote the importance of access to physical and mental health for all. Health and well-being were prioritized through the staging of the tournament, and included several initiatives such as:
the implementation of mass gathering and surveillance strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases;
enhanced policies to protect people from the harms of tobacco, including making stadium seating areas smoke-free; and
healthy food options at all 64 matches with healthy and vegetarian food reaching a 30% quota across all FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums, thus showing that healthy, sustainable and high-quality food environments are possible at major sport events.
Since 2020, the two organizations have joined forces on various digital campaigns and initiatives to address a range of health-related issues. These, include (#ReachOut), domestic violence (#SafeHome), an appreciation of the work of health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic (#HumanitysHeroes), equitable access to vaccinations and vaccines, diagnostics, oxygen and other life-saving tools (#ACTogether) and “Pass the message to kick out coronavirus campaign”, where FIFA Legends called on people around the world to take five steps to stop the spread of the disease. Several of these initiatives have also received active support from other institutions such as the African Union, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Commission to help spread the message to a global audience.
For three years, the two organizations have also championed the need to #BeActive to promote regular physical activity. WHO recommends that healthy adults do a minimum of 30 minutes physical activity per day, while children should do a minimum of 60 minutes daily. However, current WHO data has reported that 80% of adolescents are not getting enough daily exercise.

In 2004, SSFF & ASIA, became an Academy Award accredited film festival and has submitted the festival’s Grand Prix film as eligible for nomination at the Oscars the following year. In addition to the Live Action Competitions, the Non-Fiction Competition and Animation Competition, there are the Cinematic Tokyo Competition, films with Tokyo as the central theme and the Smartphone Film Competition, supported by Sony’s Xperia™, as Sony continues to expand the range of visual expression and opportunities for creators with the aim to encourage new visual creativity unique to smartphones. SSFF & ASIA also starts calling for entries for the U-25 Project, which calls for short films of 5 minutes or less by Japanese directors under the age of 25, and BRANDED SHORTS, which feature branded movies by companies and organizations.
