GM Invests in AI and Battery Materials Innovator Mitra Chem
DETROIT – General Motors (NYSE: GM) is leading a $60 million Series B financing round in Mitra Chem, a Silicon Valley-based, AI-enabled battery materials innovator. The company’s AI-powered platform and advanced research and development facility in Mountain View, California, will help accelerate GM’s commercialization of affordable electric vehicle batteries.
GM and Mitra Chem will develop advanced iron-based cathode active materials (CAM), like lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP), to power affordable and accessible EV batteries compatible with GM’s EV propulsion architecture, the Ultium Platform. GM’s funding will help Mitra Chem to scale its current operations and to expedite their novel battery materials formulation to market.
“This is a strategic investment that will further help reinforce GM’s efforts in EV batteries, accelerate our work on affordable battery chemistries like LMFP and support our efforts to build a U.S.-focused battery supply chain,” said Gil Golan, GM vice president, Technology Acceleration and Commercialization. “GM is accelerating larger investments in critical subdomains of battery technology, like cell chemistry, components and advanced cell production processes. Mitra Chem’s labs, methods and talent will fit well with our own R&D team’s work.”
Mitra Chem’s battery R&D facility can simulate, synthesize and test thousands of cathode designs monthly, ranging in size from grams to kilograms. These processes drive significantly shortened learning cycles, enabling shorter time to market for new battery cell formulas.
An “atoms-to-tons acceleration platform” powers Mitra Chem’s lab, using simulations and physics-informed machine learning models to accelerate formulation discovery, cathode synthesis optimization, cell-lifetime evaluation and process scale-up. The in-house cloud platform, purpose-built for battery cathode development, automates data ingestion across diverse synthesis, material characterization, cell prototyping, and standardized analyses and visualizations.
“GM’s investment in Mitra Chem will not only help us develop affordable battery chemistries for use in GM vehicles, but also will fuel our mission to develop, deploy and commercialize U.S. made, iron-based cathode materials that can power EVs, grid-scale electrified energy storage and beyond,” said Mitra Chem CEO and Co-Founder Vivas Kumar.
Mitra Chem is building the first North American lithium-ion battery materials product company that shortens the lab-to-production timeline by over 90%. Lithium-ion batteries are the key platform technology enabling electrification in transportation, consumer electronics, along with residential, commercial, and grid-scale energy storage. Mitra Chem’s first product category is iron-based cathodes for Western battery applications. Iron-based cathodes shift away from the use of elements such as nickel and cobalt, which are facing imminent supply crunches. Mitra Chem takes cathode products from lab to industrial scale faster than the competition by leveraging an in-house machine learning technology advantage to dramatically shorten the R&D timeline. The company’s goal is to transform the cathode from a specialty chemical to a platform technology that differentiates cell performance by end application.

BMW, Ford and Honda Agree to Create ChargeScape, a New Company Focused on Optimizing Electric Vehicle Grid Services
TORRANCE, Calif., – BMW Group, Ford Motor Company and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create ChargeScape, LLC, a new equally-owned company that will create a single, cost-effective platform connecting electric utilities, automakers and interested electric vehicle customers. Benefiting both EV customers and the electric utility industry in the U.S. and Canada, ChargeScape will unlock entirely new value that EVs can provide to the electric grid, while enabling EV customers to earn financial benefits through a variety of managed charging and energy-sharing services never before possible with traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. The closing of the transaction and subsequent formation of ChargeScape is pending regulatory approvals, with the company expected to be operational early next year.
Building on years of OVGIP cross-industry collaboration, ChargeScape’s single platform will eliminate the need for individual integrations between each automotive brand and each electric utility. ChargeScape’s platform will give electric utilities access to EV battery energy across a wide pool of EVs. Participating EV customers will have the potential to earn financial benefits by charging at “grid-friendly” times through flexible and managed schedules. Electric vehicle customers will also eventually have the opportunity for even more significant impact by sharing the energy stored in their EV batteries with the grid during times of peak demand through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications.
ChargeScape will enable the smart use of plugged-in EV batteries by securely providing energy data to electric utilities and system operators like aggregated demand response, alignment of charging and EV battery utilization with off-peak, low-cost hours and the availability of high renewable energy. Due to the efficient integration with participating automakers and the anticipation of high levels of EV customer enrollment, these energy services are expected to be a cost-efficient, operational benefit for electric utilities.
Transformational Opportunity for EV Customers and Electric Utilities
The development of this project comes at a time when electric vehicle sales and infrastructure growth are ramping up quickly, bringing new opportunities to address challenges for the electric grid. More EVs on the road means increased electricity demand on utilities to charge them. ChargeScape aims to provide energy management services to help support grid resiliency while looking ahead to the future of V2G capabilities that will benefit both EV customers and electric utilities.
Additionally, ChargeScape will play a role in helping to decarbonize the grid. The company’s efforts will reduce EV customers’ personal carbon footprints by utilizing electricity that comes from more readily available renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. While seamless integration between EV customers and utilities will be key to energy management success, participating EV customers will always remain in control of their charging and energy decisions.
“Electric grid reliability and sustainability are the foundation for an EV powered future,” said Thomas Ruemenapp, Vice President, Engineering, BMW of North America, LLC. “ChargeScape aims to accelerate the expansion of smart charging and vehicle-to-everything solutions all over the country, while increasing customer benefits, supporting the stability of the grid and helping to maximize renewable energy usage. We’re proud to be a founding member of ChargeScape and are looking forward to the opportunities this collaboration will create.”
“Electric vehicles are unlocking entirely new benefits for customers that can save them money while supporting grid resiliency and increase the use of clean, renewable energy,” said Bill Crider, global head of charging and energy services, Ford Motor Company. “ChargeScape will help accelerate the true potential of the EV revolution by providing significant benefits to both utilities and EV customers through smart vehicle-to-grid services.”
“As Honda seeks to achieve our global goal of carbon neutrality, we are counting on this platform to create new value for our customers by connecting EVs to electric utilities, strengthening grid resources and reducing CO2 emissions,” said Jay Joseph, vice president of Sustainability & Business Development, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With automakers accelerating toward the electrified future, we must find solutions like ChargeScape that enable all stakeholders to work together for the good of our customers, society and our industry by enabling greater use of renewable energy for and from mobility.”
Benefits of Working Together
ChargeScape, along with the work done to date through OVGIP, will bring managed charging benefits to more EV customers and can eliminate marketing and outreach costs for utilities trying to reach their individual customer bases. BMW Group, Ford Motor Company and American Honda have direct, multi-channel communication with their EV customers, solving a central problem for utilities that typically do not know or have an easy and cost-effective way to identify the EV customers in their service territory.
Additionally, by leveraging automaker telematics, ChargeScape intends to provide managed charge scheduling through vehicle connectivity without requiring Wi-Fi-enabled charging stations. This will support the many EV customers who do not use “smart” chargers at home, as their EVs would otherwise be unreachable for grid services.
The three founding members welcome other automakers to join in and fully unlock opportunities provided by ChargeScape’s grid service offerings once the company is fully operational.

GM Launches Effort to Bring Assisted Driving Education Directly to Consumers
DETROIT – General Motors launched “Hands Free, Eyes On,” a consumer education program to encourage consumer confidence in the use of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as part of GM’s larger commitment to the safe deployment of these technologies 1, like Super Cruise 2 . To avoid concern and confusion about the benefits of ADAS as they become more widely available, GM intends to give consumers more information so that they are informed, excited and confident in the technology.
“We know that to help achieve our vision of zero crashes, we must increase the adoption of ADAS and proactively highlight the benefits they offer,” said Scott Miller, GM vice president, Software Defined Vehicle and Operating System. “To increase usage, we must help drivers understand how currently available technologies, like Super Cruise, work and the responsibility drivers have when using ADAS features. We want customers to be assured of what we are doing to safely deploy these technologies.”
The “Hands Free, Eyes On” program is designed to explain the current state of ADAS — from active safety to hands-free features like Super Cruise — available to customers, all of which require the driver’s constant attention to the road, versus fully autonomous driving which does not require driver intervention. With a hands-free enabled vehicle like one equipped with Super Cruise, the driver is responsible for the vehicle’s operation. That means their eyes need to be on the road at all times, even when their hands are free.
GM is committed to the safe deployment of current and future advanced driver assistance systems and believes part of this is helping consumers to understand their capabilities and how to properly use them.
Core elements of safe deployment include:
1. A commitment to testing and validation
2. Integrating a comprehensive set of sensor technologies
3. Ensuring technologies have driver attention systems
4. Keeping our maps updated by monitoring roads and working with the public sector
5. Educating consumers and other stakeholders
GM will share free ADAS educational resources and best practices on GM.com and GM social channels. Content will be continuously updated.

GM Leads $50 Million Funding Round in EnergyX to Unlock U.S.-Based Lithium Supply for Rapidly Scaling EV Production
AUSTIN, Texas AND DETROIT – Energy Exploration Technologies Inc. (“EnergyX”) and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced that GM Ventures is leading a $50 million Series B financing round in EnergyX, and has entered into a strategic agreement to develop EnergyX’s lithium extraction and refinery technology. The collaboration is focused on unlocking the North American supply of lithium, a critical material for EV batteries, by using EnergyX’s innovative process to maximize efficiency while improving sustainability for GM’s rapidly scaling EV production.
EnergyX’s direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology portfolio can make lithium metal directly from brine and potentially in anode-ready form for EV batteries, which enables more cost-effective and sustainable lithium recovery to unlock a vast lithium supply chain in North America that may otherwise be unviable.
GM is investing in every stage of the battery supply chain in North America, from raw materials, to processing, to cell components and full battery cell production.
The extensive collaboration between these two American companies includes three key components:
A technology development program to support commercialization of EnergyX’s advanced DLE and refinery processes, which could complement or replace traditional methods of evaporation ponds
An agreement enabling GM to access competitive lithium offtakes for GM’s exclusive use in EV production, including material sourced from North and South American mining companies contracted by EnergyX
Additional strategic financing for lithium production projects in North and South America, using EnergyX’s technology to drive potential supply chain opportunities for GM
“The EnergyX team of scientists and engineers have worked relentlessly for five years developing cutting-edge DLE technology to solve the immense bottlenecks that have limited global lithium production and supply chain,” said Teague Egan, CEO, EnergyX. “This single bottleneck (a massive lithium shortage) is the biggest challenge to scaling EV production. We will unlock lithium supply in the U.S., a pivotal move in expanding the EV industry. There are many ways of gauging success, but few are more rewarding than the support of leaders like GM. We’re energized by GM’s investment and will keep a ‘Day 1’ attitude as we pursue our goal of making EnergyX the biggest lithium company in the world.”
“We are committed to securing EV critical minerals that are sustainable and cost competitive to maintain our leadership position among automakers,” said Jeff Morrison, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “The investment in EnergyX is a further proof point of GM’s leadership position. EnergyX is developing a novel direct lithium extraction process that’s not only cost competitive but also will reduce energy, land and water usage as compared to the current extraction and processing process for brine-based lithium. We are excited to be partnered with EnergyX on their efforts.”
In 2022, EnergyX became the first firm to design, build and commission an in-field pilot plant in the Lithium Triangle, which encompasses over 65% of the known global lithium reserves. The company’s LiTAS™ technology increases lithium recovery rates to over 90% from the current industry standard of 30-40% using ponds and hit 94% during their field trials. After a successful five-month pilot program proving the efficacy of the LiTAS™ lithium refinery process, EnergyX will scale those systems to more robust market demonstration plants located at five regional test beds in North and South America, followed by full-scale commercialization.
This new round of financing, funded by GM and other investors, helps solidify EnergyX as one of the world leaders in DLE technology and will also enable the company to broaden its research and development efforts for pure lithium metal anodes and its solid-state lithium metal battery program, SoLiS™. Amid building a 40,000-square-foot innovation and manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, to house its growing operation, EnergyX currently counts over 50 employees and will increase that number to 100 in the coming months.

MINI USA Shocks Los Angeles With Giant Rc Car Controller That Can Charge Electric Vehicles
Los Angeles, Calif. – Before getting behind the wheel for the first time, many of today’s drivers found their love for cars at an early age with electric remote controlled, or RC, cars. Today, MINI USA looks to bring back that playful, childhood element to full-sized electric vehicles, many of which are expected at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show kicking off this week. Playing on MINI’s small size and fun-to-drive spirit, MINI has erected a giant 240V Level 2 electric vehicle charger in the shape of an attention-getting “MINI-fied” RC controller. The oversized charging station is located in close proximity to the Los Angeles Convention Center, at 698 West Olympic Boulevard at the corner of Flower Street.
The RC controller-shaped charger will be in place and fully functional November 18-19, the first two days of the LA Auto Show. EV owners interested in plugging into the RC charger can look for a parking space with the message “OUT-FUN THE COMPETITION” spray-painted within, as well as signage on either side pointing arrows and the message “CHARGE THIS WAY.”
“At MINI we always like to bring a splash of excitement that reminds people of the fun and creativity inherent to MINI’s culture,” said Rah Mahtani, Brand Communications Manager, MINI USA. “We strive to keep that fun and excitement alive for everyone that loves to drive, and this project unites the ideas of today’s electric vehicles with our collective nostalgia for the electric RC cars of our youth.”
The giant sized charger sits at approximately nine feet tall and is finished in Nanuq White, the newest color offered on the MINI Cooper SE, with a name chosen by MINI fans. The top of the charger is painted in a contrasting black which pays homage to the signature MINI contrast roof, and the giant wheel control on the side is an actual full-size MINI wheel and tire.
In the base of the charger is a 10-inch interactive screen that features video content of MINI USA’s most recent “Nanuq the polar bear”, campaign spot. A QR code is also displayed that allows people to access the MINI Electric augmented reality filter to explore and have fun learning about the MINI electric while they wait for their EV to charge.
Following its stint at the LA Auto Show, the MINI RC charger will go on tour, with its temporary installation at several local MINI dealers throughout California, before being packed up in a giant cardboard box and stored in the attic at mom’s house.

Volkswagen starts U.S. assembly of all-electric ID.4 flagship in Chattanooga, Tennessee
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., — Volkswagen of America (VWoA) today marked the start of production of its all-electric ID.4 compact SUV in Chattanooga, Tenn., the company’s first electric vehicle assembled in the United States.
The ID.4 is Volkswagen Group’s most popular all-electric model, with 190,000 units delivered to customers globally since its launch in 2021. Volkswagen aims to ramp up ID.4 assembly in Chattanooga to 7,000 vehicles per month later this year, with the goal to further increase output through 2023. Consumers can expect vehicles to be delivered as early as October 2022. Initially, the American-assembled ID.4 will be available in either rear-wheel- or all-wheel-drive 82kWh battery form. In addition, a rear-wheel-drive version with a 62kWh battery will go into production later in 2022, with a lower MSRP.
“We’re just starting to write a new chapter for Volkswagen in America, and it is very much an American story,” said Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the global Volkswagen brand. “When we promised to bring Volkswagen EVs to the millions, it always included American workers building those EVs right there in Chattanooga. We couldn’t be prouder to see that vision realized today with our ID.4 electric flagship rolling off the lines. This is another milestone in Volkswagen’s ambitious electrification strategy for the U.S. market and globally.”
The start of production is the result of Volkswagen’s $800 million investment into the electrification of its Chattanooga factory, including dedicated facilities for vehicle and battery pack assembly. The factory in Tennessee is now the sixth global site to produce vehicles for Volkswagen’s electric line-up.
The American-assembled ID.4, Volkswagen’s electric SUV flagship, will be mainly sourced in the North American region1, particularly the United States. The vehicle includes materials and components assembled in 11 U.S. states, from steel in Alabama and Ohio, to interior parts in Indiana and South Carolina, and electronics components in Kentucky and North Carolina. The EV battery will be supplied by SK Innovation located in Georgia.
As part of the preparation to launch the ID.4, suppliers have invested $2.7 billion throughout the North American continent, including the battery partnership with SK Innovation. More than 3,000 U.S. jobs on supplier side have been created.
“There has been a tremendous effort by thousands of VW Chattanooga employees to bring this vision to life,” said Chris Glover, President and CEO, Volkswagen Chattanooga Operations, LLC. “I’d like to thank all our highly motivated team members and the extended community of Chattanooga for supporting us as we begin assembly of the ID.4 for the North American market.”
Volkswagen Chattanooga employs more than 4,000 people, and is actively hiring more than 1,000 new production team members through 2022, to help meet high customer demand for the ID.4 and Atlas SUV family. To prepare for the EV transition, the factory has organized more than 75,000 hours of workforce training on battery-powered vehicle and high-voltage systems.
Volkswagen has committed $7.1 billion over the next five years in the North American region to boost its product portfolio, regional R&D and manufacturing capabilities. The brand will advance its electric line-up through 2030, including the American-assembled ID.4 in 2022, a fastback sedan and the ID. Buzz electric microbus in 2024, and new electric SUVs from 2026. Volkswagen aims for 55 percent of U.S. sales to be fully electric by 2030.

Hyundai Motor Group to Establish First Dedicated EV Plant and Battery Manufacturing Facility in the U.S.
SEOUL, South Korea and BRYAN COUNTY, Ga., May 20, 2022 — Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) today announced it has entered into an agreement with the State of Georgia to build its first dedicated full electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities in the U.S.
The Group’s U.S. investment decision will support its goal of becoming a leader in electric mobility in the U.S. market. It also highlights the Group’s commitment to sustainability through electrification and to supporting the economies where it operates.
The official signing ceremony was held in Bryan County, attended by Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp and other Georgia officials as well as Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO, Jaehoon Chang, and Hyundai Motor President and Chief Operating Officer José Muñoz. Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung joined the signing ceremony virtually.
“The future of transportation is in the Peach State as we announce the largest project in our state’s history – delivering high-quality jobs on the leading edge of mobility to hardworking Georgians,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “Not only are we thrilled to welcome Hyundai to Georgia’s coastal region, but it’s incredible that within a year of Georgia’s investment in the Bryan County Megasite, we are locating a world-class project here with a company with great Georgia history!”
“As one of the world’s most successful and advanced mobility leaders, we are incredibly proud to share our plan to open our first dedicated full EV and battery manufacturing facilities in the U.S.,” said Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung. “The U.S. has always held an important place in the Group’s global strategy, and we are excited to partner with the State of Georgia to achieve our shared goal of electrified mobility and sustainability in the U.S.”
The new EV plant and battery manufacturing facilities represent an investment of approximately USD 5.54 billion. The new facility will break ground in early 2023 and is expected to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025 with an annual capacity of 300,000 units. The battery manufacturing facility will be established through a strategic partnership, which the details will be disclosed at a later stage.
The Group plans to produce wide range of full electric vehicles for U.S. customers at the new Georgia EV plant. Details of production models will be shared at later dates. The local EV production will increase U.S. consumer accessibility to the Group’s innovative EVs. Through the battery manufacturing facility, the Group also aims to establish a stable supply chain and build a healthy EV ecosystem in the U.S.
The EV and battery manufacturing plant will be located on a dedicated 2,923-acre site in Bryan County Georgia, with immediate access to I-95 and I-16 highways which creates easy access to 250 major metro areas. It is less than 50 kilometers from the Port of Savannah, the single-largest and fastest-growing container terminal in the U.S. with two Class I rail facilities on-site provided by Georgia Central Railway. West Point, Georgia is already home to the Group’s Kia manufacturing hub in the US.
Hyundai Motor Group selected Georgia as the Group’s EV and battery production site due to a range of favorable business conditions, including speed-to-market, talented workforce, as well as existing network of the Group affiliates and suppliers.
Georgia is the Southeastern leader for EV registration per 1,000 registered automobiles. To support these drivers, Georgia is constantly developing access to publicly available EV charging stations and already offers more outlets per capita than anywhere else in the Southeast. The Group’s new investment will help accelerate the state’s sustainable shift to electrification.
Continuing the Group’s support for the U.S. economy, the project is expected to create about 8,100 new jobs.
The EV plant investment comes as a part of the Group’s 2021 announcement to invest USD 7.4 billion by 2025 to foster future mobility in the U.S., including production of EVs and offering smart mobility solutions.
Hyundai Motor Group to lead US electrified mobility industry
Hyundai Motor Group will be a leader in the U.S. auto market’s EV transition with the new facility.
The Group is accelerating its electrification efforts with the global target to sell 3.23 million full electric vehicles annually by 2030. To realize this goal, the Group plans to establish a global EV production network that will ensure a stable supply of EVs around the globe.
“We decided to build our first dedicated EV plant in the U.S. because America embraces change and drives innovation,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor. “This new EV plant is the future of our business, and It will help us meet the growing demands of our US customers who want leading edge design, safe, zero-emissions vehicles now and in the future”.
With the additional EV and battery production capabilities in the U.S., the Group aims to become one of the top three EV providers in the U.S. by 2026. The Group plans to lead the EV market not just in sales, but also in terms of design, technologies, and mobility solutions optimized for electric mobility era.
The investment is in line with the U.S. government’s roadmap to accelerate electrification, as global OEMs are announcing plans to expand their local EV production in the U.S. Last year, the U.S. government announced a new initiative under which sales of zero-emission vehicles should account for at least half of OEM’s new vehicle sales by 2030.
Showcasing the Future of Group’s Smart Manufacturing: Intelligent, Sustainable and Data-driven
The new plant will boast a highly connected, automated, and flexible manufacturing system, which organically connects all elements of the EV ecosystem to realize customer value.

Club Car To Acquire Danish Electric Vehicle Manufacturer Garia From Lars Larsen Group
AUGUSTA, Ga., — Club Car today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire Garia A/S (“Garia”), a Denmark-based manufacturer of electric low-speed vehicles for the utility, consumer and golf markets, from Lars Larsen Group. Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter.
Garia, founded in 2005, is best known as an innovator of luxury golf and leisure cars that feature elevated performance and distinctive Scandanavian design. The company launched Garia Utility in 2015, a growing line of compact vehicles for utility applications, including: public sector (municipalities, hospitals, universities, parks), facility management (industrial sites, hotels, resorts), leisure and outdoor (zoos, amusement parks, forestry and agriculture), and last-mile delivery (mail, packages, food delivery).
The acquisition also includes Melex, which Garia acquired in November 2021 to accelerate its growth in the utility space. Melex is a manufacturer of lightweight utility vehicles based in Poland and offers an array of street and non-street legal products, including multi-passenger and compact cargo utility vehicles.
“We have great respect for Garia and Melex, which design and build some of the most impressive electric golf, leisure and compact utility vehicles in the world,” said Mark Wagner, president of Club Car. “We are excited to welcome their teams to the Club Car family.
“Our product lines complement each other nicely with very little overlap,” he added. “Which is great news for our dealers and customers in Europe and the United States who will have access to a wider range of zero-emission, on and off-road vehicles at a greater variety of price points.”
Garia’s golf and consumer cars are primarily luxury products geared toward the high end of their respective markets. Garia and Melex’s utility products are mostly model types that Club Car doesn’t currently manufacture.
“Club Car is the perfect partner and will immediately open new opportunities for growth across our entire product portfolio,” said Garia CEO Jakob Holstein. “Club Car’s extensive dealer network, combined with the operational benefits we can achieve with substantially increased scale, will help us take our brands to a new level.”
Club Car is a portfolio company of Platinum Equity, which acquired the business in 2021.
“Around the world demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to grow,” said Platinum Equity Partner Jacob Kotzubei. “The addition of Garia and Melex’s all-electric fleets will strenthen Club Car’s ability to meet that demand globally, and in the European utility market in particular, where governments and businesses are modernizing and electrifying their vehicle fleets.”
The Garia and Melex transaction is Club Car’s first add-on acquisition under Platinum Equity’s ownership.
“A big part of our ambition for Club Car is to expand its addressable market geographically and into new product categories,” said Platinum Equity Managing Director Matthew Louie. “This acquisition is an important step in delivering on that strategy. We will continue seeking more opportunities to grow the business organically and through additional acquisitions.”
Morgan Lewis, Bech-Bruun, and Sołtysiński Kawecki & Szlęzak are serving as legal counsel and Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP is providing debt financing counsel to Club Car and Platinum Equity on the Garia acquisition. Goldman Sachs is leading the debt financing on the transaction.

BMW Manufacturing to Expand Plant Logistics Operations
Spartanburg, S.C. BMW Manufacturing announced today that it will expand its logistics operations to a new building being developed across Interstate 85 from the plant. The facility, located off Freeman Farm Road, is being constructed by Becknell Industrial. Total investment in the project is approximately $100 million. When completed, the new logistics center will be nearly one million square feet in size with an opportunity for future expansion.
“For nearly three decades, BMW has called South Carolina its second home. This expansion in our logistics operation represents our continued commitment to this state, and it will prepare Plant Spartanburg for the future,” said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing. “The new warehouse will allow us to consolidate our logistics processes as well as implement efficiency measures for a more sustainable logistics operation.”
When the new logistics center opens in the middle of 2022, it will allow BMW to consolidate two offsite warehouse operations – one for returnable containers and another for body shop parts – into one efficient onsite location. Inside the warehouse, shipments from suppliers will be sorted, then delivered to their respective Plant Spartanburg technologies. The result is a faster, leaner, more efficient supply chain.
To minimize the impact of truck traffic in the area and allow for easy access to BMW, two private bridges will be constructed to connect the logistics center to the BMW campus: one over Freeman Farm Road and the other over Interstate 85. The bridges are being built by United Infrastructure Group. Construction of the new bridges is currently underway.
Update on New BMW Training Center
Construction continues on the new $20 million, 67,000 square foot training center on the BMW campus, which was announced in February. When completed in the summer of 2022, the building will feature multiple classrooms for both professional development and technical training, an outdoor amphitheater, and a unique concept of outdoor meeting and workspace that includes wireless capabilities. The training center will also be home to BMW’s well-known apprenticeship program – BMW Scholars.
Since 1992, the BMW Group has invested more than $11.4 billion in its South Carolina factory. BMW Manufacturing is the largest BMW Group plant in the world, producing more than 1,500 vehicles each day. The plant exports more than two-thirds of its models to 125 global markets. For seven consecutive years, it has been the largest exporter by value in the United States. The model portfolio includes five top-selling BMW X models, four Motorsport X models, and two plug-in hybrid electric X models. The factory has a production capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles and employs more than 11,000 people.

BMW of North America And California Bioenergy Expand Partnership Utilizing Innovative Dairy Technology to Provide Clean Energy for EV Charging in California
Mountain View, Calif- Nov. 8, 2021 … As the first automaker to collaborate with dairy farms on renewable energy projects, BMW of North America and California Bioenergy (CalBio) today announced an expanded partnership to include Bar 20 Dairy, a farm based in Kerman, CA. The collaboration aims to power EVs in California with clean energy, and generate cleaner air in the state by leveraging the latest biodigester technology to create renewable energy by capturing methane from manure to feed back into the power grid.
The new, next generation climate-smart dairy technology captures methane from manure and turns it into renewable energy without combustion, offsetting 100% of carbon emissions and sending renewable energy back to the electric grid to power EVs in a clean way. It will also result in critical methane reductions to help the state meet its short and long-term climate goals. The methane emission reductions at the farm, when combined with the renewable energy generation, result in carbon emission reductions equivalent to providing clean power to over 17,000 electric vehicles per year. The project will also provide significant local air quality benefits in Northern and Central California, while furthering the state’s ambitious clean transportation goals.
“At BMW, we continue to pursue new ways to bring sustainability to all aspects of our vehicles – including the electricity powering our EVs,” said Adam Langton, energy services manager, connected eMobility, BMW of North America. “Our partnership with CalBIO represents an innovative way to help drive renewable energy investment, which not only powers our vehicles with clean energy, but also reduces methane emissions at dairy farms and brings a new revenue source to agricultural communities. We hope to expand this forward thinking model in the future, bringing more biodigester investment to farms throughout the U.S. and continuing to provide clean energy to EV drivers.”
What makes the digester at Bar 20 Dairy farm unique is how the fuel cell technology creates ultra-clean renewable electricity on site. The system is efficient, producing twice as much electricity as conventional generators using the same amount of biogas. By capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and efficiently making clean, renewable electricity, the project is one of the cleanest sources of energy in the state. The use of electric fuel reduces carbon emissions, as well as smog producing emissions and other pollutants that impact air quality.
“In bringing together the best technology from Silicon Valley with the best technology from the Central Valley, we’re really doing something special for California,” said N. Ross Buckenham, CEO of CalBio. “This ultra-clean, biogas-fueled, on-dairy, self-generation power system scales from small to large dairies. We’re excited to now be able to demonstrate a large-scale system capable of generating one megawatt base load 24 x 7 that provides grid resiliency, and greatly improves local air quality while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
In addition to the varied environmental benefits, the partnership also brings new revenue to family farms and agricultural communities through this production of clean transportation fuel. Under the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program, BMW generates environmental credits with dairy farms for these partnerships, both sharing the value of these credits. This type of innovative, cross-sector alignment not only helps farm communities with new revenue, but also serves as a model to accelerate the adoption of biodigesters at more farms in California and beyond.
Commitment to Sustainability.
BMW Group is dedicated to social and environmental responsibility and is leading the charge for increased efficiency and state-of-the-art sustainability solutions. The company takes a holistic approach to sustainability that extends beyond the vehicle, from design and engineering, to supply chain and procurement, manufacturing, and charging. Through its partnership with CalBio and other dairy farms, BMW is reshaping how EVs are charged by off-setting all BMW EV charging carbon emissions with this innovative approach.
Two All-New Fully-Electric BMW Vehicles Arrive Early Next Year.
BMW’s efforts to provide clean energy for electric vehicle charging in CA, comes in advance of the launch of the all new, fully-electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW i4 Gran Coupe, which will arrive in the U.S. early next year. Each of these vehicles are built on BMW’s 5th generation edrive technology and represent the latest in BMW technology, innovation, connectivity and performance.

Sustainability, Diversity, Innovation, Profitability And Optimism – The MINI Future Strategy.
1. INTRODUCTION.
Blue-skies thinking, seeing challenges as opportunities, taking the wishes and needs of individuals into account openly and unconventionally – all these facets are firmly anchored in the tradition of the MINI brand. MINI is now charting the course for the future on the platform of this self-assured mindset. This involves MINI taking up the current challenges in the areas of mobility, energy economy and climate protection and facing up to them with independent solutions for the driving fun of tomorrow that is so typical of the brand. The strategy developed for this is based on the campaign slogan BIG LOVE. This symbolises the close commitment of the brand to the fundamental natural requirements of our planet, to human beings in all their diversity, to technological progress and to profitable growth as a manufacturer of premium cars.
The classic Mini was the ideal answer for contemporary issues of the time. It was developed during the era of the Suez oil crisis and was primarily an economical car that took a creative approach to space, occupied a minimal amount of space on the road and fitted into tiny parking spaces in urban centres. The classic Mini had a small footprint but offered enough space for four people and their luggage. Its revolutionary vehicle concept helped the pint-sized car to achieve its status as a classless car, which boasted a broad community of enthusiasts for unique driving fun all over the world. For the past 20 years, the modern MINI has been transferring these principles to the premium segment of small cars. Sustainability, social diversity, a spirit of innovation and the opportunity to tap into new target groups and markets are therefore elementary strengths of the brand. MINI is deploying these characteristics to meet the current challenges in the area of urban mobility and adopts a confident approach.
A clear acknowledgement of sustainability is expressed in a continuous reduction of the CO2 footprint for each car over the entire production lifecycle. This encompasses the supply chain and the exclusive use of green electricity in production. Further contributing factors will be complete electrification of the model range by the early 2030s and a steadily increasing proportion of natural and recyclable materials used in the vehicles.
There is much more to the social responsibility being taken on by MINI. The classless car of yesteryear has long become the ideal vehicle for a diverse community. Male and female MINI drivers are individualists and at the same time part of a big community that interprets diversity as an enrichment for everybody. The team developing, producing and selling MINI models is diverse. As a manufacturer of premium cars operating on the global stage, MINI is committed to social diversity and supports initiatives that promote tolerance and an open society. The extent to which MINI feels committed to the positive zest for life of people is also demonstrated by a further commitment. MINI progresses solutions through the accelerator URBAN-X which improve life where the majority of people live: in towns and cities.
MINI is working up fresh ideas on the design of urban mobility in the future. Alongside innovative vehicle concepts such as the MINI Vision Urbanaut, this entrepreneurial approach includes pioneering developments in the area of digital services and products. Consequently, the User Experience associated with the use of the display and control system of MINI makes a major contribution to the driving fun so typical of the brand. Seamless integration of their smartphones empowers MINI customers to remain fully connected with their digital life while they are in their car. Furthermore, the MINI App is morphing into a community platform that not only deepens the relationship between driver and car but also connects MINI fans with each other.
“MINI was always the answer to very special challenges for individual mobility. And the willingness to rethink the status quo defines the brand to the present day,” commented Bernd Körber, Head of MINI. “Alongside electromobility, the development of new target groups and sales markets is a key factor for the future of MINI.” Starting as early as 2023, MINI is presenting a new generation of all-electric models. Two of the models developed from the ground up for pure electric mobility are being produced in China. Local production offers MINI optimised opportunities as a provider to participate more extensively than before in the dynamic growth in the Chinese automotive market. From 2023, the successor to the current MINI Countryman will be built at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig, powered by an electrified drive and with a combustion engine. All other MINI models will be produced at the MINI Plant Oxford, which remains the heart of MINI production. The United Kingdom will continue to be the home of the MINI brand.
2. BIG LOVE FOR THE PLANET. THE MINI STRATEGY FOR CONSISTENT SUSTAINABILITY.
Anyone selecting MINI will always be opting for sustainability. The principle of achieving more with less is part of the brand’s tradition. Way back in 1959, the designer of the classic Mini, Alec Issigonis, showed how effective and sustainable a car can be if it has a footprint on the road with a length of slightly over three metres while providing transport for four passengers and their luggage from A to B. The revolutionary design principle with the four-cylinder engine fitted crosswise at the front and the wheels positioned at the corners of the car also resulted in exceptionally agile driving characteristics at a low fuel consumption.
As a brand of the BMW Group, MINI is also dedicated to the strategic sustainability goals of the company. In 2020, the BMW Group developed its own agenda, which was even more ambitious than the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, to limit global warming to less than two degrees Celsius. The company is therefore ready to meet the requirements of the EU programme “Fit for 55”, which provides for reducing the CO2 emissions of new car fleets by 55 percent from 2030. The contribution by MINI includes consistent electrification of the model range. As early as the beginning of the 2030s, MINI will be an all-electric brand.
Consistent CO2 reduction over the entire value chain.
In order to achieve this objective, the CO2 footprint will be consistently reduced over the entire value chain, including production and upstream supply chain. By 2030, the BMW Group is planning a per-vehicle reduction of CO2 emissions in this area by at least 40 percent compared with 2019. Over the long term, the BMW Group has defined the objective of establishing a climate-neutral business model over the entire value chain by the year 2050.
Binding environmental standards ensure that the CO2 emissions within the supply chain will undergo a 20 percent reduction by the year 2030. The fact alone that the suppliers involved in the production of battery cells for vehicles powered by an electric drivetrain use exclusively green electricity means that over the coming ten years around ten million tons less CO2 will be released into the atmosphere. MINI uses comparatively small energy storage systems for the design of high-voltage batteries. These ensure a range appropriate for urban mobility while simultaneously not impairing electricity consumption and the agility of the vehicles through excessively high weight. Transparent procurement monitored by the BMW Group ensures that the raw materials necessary for the construction of high-voltage batteries are compliant with environmental and social standards. The high-voltage batteries developed for electrically-powered models of MINI secure a long lifetime. After their application in the car, they can also be used in stationary storage systems for buildings also over a very long period. The storage units only have to be recycled after this repurposing and secondary use has finished. At the present time, more than 90 percent of the raw materials used in the batteries can be recycled.
Also after the year 2030, a reduction of CO2 emissions by 80 percent is projected in the production of each vehicle. This means that the sustainability standards already achieved in BMW Group plants to date will be once again ramped up. At present, each MINI is already manufactured with a carbon-neutral footprint. Use of 100 percent green electricity at the MINI Plant Oxford makes a contribution to this. A proportion of this electricity is generated on site locally. One of the biggest photovoltaic generation systems in the United Kingdom has been installed on the roof of the production facilities. Around 11 500 solar cells with an output of around three megawatts generate electricity from solar energy and thereby save around 1 500 tons of CO2 each year. 18 LNG-operated trucks are also being deployed in Oxford. They are powered by organic Liquid Natural Gas and thereby contribute to additional CO2 reduction in the production process. The successor to the current MINI Countryman will be manufactured at the site of the BMW Group Plant Leipzig from 2023 onwards and wind turbines located here generate green electricity for vehicle production.
By 2030, a reduction of at least half of the CO2 emissions compared with 2019 is projected for each vehicle and each kilometre driven. The electrification of the drivetrain plays a key role here. At an early stage, MINI took on a pioneering function in the development of local emission-free premium mobility. The field trials launched with a test fleet of 600 MINI E cars in 2009 yielded important findings about the use of an all-electric drive under practical, real-life working conditions in everyday urban traffic.
The brand already has two models in its product range with plug-in hybrid model MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 1.7 l/100 km, combined electricity consumption: 15.5 – 14.8 kWh/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 47 – 39 g/km in compliance with WLTP) and the all-electric powered MINI Cooper SE (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km, combined electricity consumption: 17.6 – 15.2 kWh/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km in compliance with WLTP) that permit local emission-free driving fun. If the high-voltage battery of the MINI Cooper SE is charged with energy from the conventional EU electricity mix, the CO2 footprint is reduced by around 36 percent in comparison with a like-for-like MINI 3-door car powered by a petrol engine. If electricity is only used from renewable sources, the reduction is even as much as up to 70 percent.
The MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper SE meanwhile make up 15 percent of the total global sales of MINI. This proportion is projected to increase to 50 percent by 2027. At the beginning of the 2030s, MINI will only have all-electric powered models in its range.
Innovative materials, greater use of secondary raw materials.
Engineers at MINI are always finding new ways to provide maximum protection for natural resources in their selection of raw materials. For example, the proportion of secondary raw materials used in each vehicle is gradually being significantly increased for this purpose. By comparison with primary materials, this approach once again permits a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions in production. An increasing proportion of secondary aluminium is another measure that will be used in future.
Recycled materials will also be employed in areas such as the roof liner, and for upholstery materials, seats, foot mats and floor coverings. In future, natural-fibre materials and plastics obtained from recycled PET bottles will be used instead of leather. Recycled fishing nets will form the raw materials for floor mats. The potential for renewable materials is used particularly comprehensively in the study MINI Vision Urbanaut. The entire interior is free of leather and chrome. Instead, natural materials like cork are used for the steering wheel and on sections of the floor, and removable covers made of knitted textile are also used. This creates a pleasant ambience in a natural way.
Tailor-made sustainability and with maximum consistency: MINI STRIP.
MINI STRIP was recently presented as an unconventional example so typical of MINI, demonstrating how creative thinking can pave the way towards more sustainability. This custom special was created in a collaboration between MINI and the British fashion designer Paul Smith. A tailor-made one of one was designed on the basis of a MINI Cooper SE incorporating the themes “Simplicity, Transparency, Sustainability”. As the name of the car suggests, this vehicle was reduced to its structural essence. Ultimately, only those elements regarded by Paul Smith as absolutely essential were used.
This consistent focus on sustainability resulted in features such as a radically reduced interior where the conventional four-part instrument panel is replaced by a large, semi-transparent component with a smoked-glass look and the customer’s smartphone takes on the function of the central instrument. Untreated panels and recycled materials from a 3D printer are the dominant feature in the exterior. Visible bolts on the mounted parts indicate that the individual components can be easily dismantled and fed back into the raw-material cycle at the end of the vehicle lifecycle.
Support for initiatives benefiting sustainability.
MINI is pursuing a large number of activities beyond the boundaries of manufacturing cars which are targeted at enhancing the quality of life and sustainability in the urban environment. These measures include, for example, cooperation between MINI and the non-profit organisation Earthwatch Europe in the United Kingdom called the “Tiny Forest” initiative. Just as a small space in MINI is used highly efficiently, MINI also supports the “Tiny Forest” initiative being implemented by the environmental conservationists. Alongside the British body-pressing plant in Swindon, MINI has commissioned the planting of around 600 trees very close to each other, which will be allowed to grow in a completely natural way. This initiative captures additional CO2 and creates a habitat for more than 500 species of animal and plant. Another “Tiny Forest” is planned at the MINI Plant Oxford in 2022.
Local initiatives are also presented on the platform MINI VOICES. These have the potential to change the world. One example of this is provided by the architect Clarisse Merlet showcased by MINI France. She developed a method of obtaining environmentally benign construction materials from clothing that cannot be recovered. Her FabBRICK start-up based in Paris produces bricks made from recycled textile waste. The Swiss start-up Umami also presented on MINI VOICES produces microgreens, which are grown in an aquaponics system. The nutritious plants form a closed-loop circulation together with fish and freshwater shrimps. They are cultivated here without any artificial fertilisers. The microgreens from the start-up are supplied to prestigious restaurants in Zurich.
3. BIG LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE. THE ENGAGEMENT OF MINI
FOR DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.
MINI promotes diversity – inside and outside the MINI organisation. As an international company, community and social responsibility are a top priority at MINI. This also includes a clearly-defined commitment to diversity within the company. “We are all different, but pretty good together” – employees at MINI all over the world are cooperating successfully in accordance with this motto. MINI perceives diversity as a strength. The company is convinced that diverse teams are more creative and more innovative. They are therefore a key factor for success in competition for new markets, customers and qualified up-and-coming talent.
The approach has been firmly anchored in the DNA of MINI since its foundation in 1959. The designer of the classic Mini, Alec Issigonis, was born in Turkey in 1906 as the son of a mother originating from Bavaria and a British father of Greek origin.
Open, free of prejudice and respectful corporate culture.
MINI – building on the diversity strategy of the BMW Group – has set up the MINI Diversity Programme in order to continue to strengthen the awareness for all dimensions of diversity within the company and to exert a positive impact on the corporate culture. At MINI, this means living and promoting a corporate culture, in which all employees are treated with equal value and respect, regardless of their origin, identity, age, sexual orientation, and whether or not they have a disability. This is all about creating an optimum working environment in an open and respectful corporate culture that is entirely free of prejudice.
MINI has always been a brand that brings together different people. This is also demonstrated in the motto asserted by the global premium car manufacturer on its journey to an inclusive future: “We are all different, but pretty good together”. The company raises the awareness of its employees and its managers to topics associated with diversity through training sessions, presentations and dialogue formats.
The everyday working environment at MINI has a long track record of demonstrating progress for absolute equality in the staffing structure for departments, responsibilities and management positions of all types. Today, there are already more women than men working in the total workforce at MINI.
The company has defined targets in relation to the proportion of women for sustainable promotion of women in management functions. In order to achieve these targets, MINI has carefully analysed existing measures and programmes and strategically optimised them. These include new formats for strategic promotion of female junior managers and the possibility of organising management functions with two persons in joint leadership. Furthermore, MINI ensures a high proportion of women in the junior management promotion programmes and is committed to seamless return to the world of work after parental leave.
Experience driving fun: MINI Safety Training for people with disabilities.
Outside the company’s own organisational structure, MINI is committed to openness and diversity. As part of this engagement, the BMW and MINI Driving Academy programme now includes a safety training course for people with disabilities and this enhances driving fun for them.
In order to achieve this target, training vehicles are converted so that they have hand controls. This means that both hands can always remain on the steering wheel. An additional ring on the steering wheel is used to accelerate. A special brake lever is configured directly alongside. These conversions allow vehicles such as the 170 kW/231 hp MINI John Cooper Works (combined fuel consumption: 7.1 – 6.8 l/100 km in compliance with WLTP, 7.1 – 6.9 l/100 km in compliance with NEDC; combined CO2 emissions: 161 – 155 g/km in compliance with WLTP, 163 – 158 g/km in compliance with NEDC) to be driven confidently and with sporty verve at the training location after some practice.
4. BIG LOVE FOR PROGRESS. DIGITALISATION AND INNOVATIONS FOR TYPICAL MINI DRIVING FUN.
Global challenges like climate change and urbanisation provide the impetus for MINI to drive forward innovations. These improve customer experience and generate positive impacts for society and the environment. MINI is dedicated to progress not simply through innovative vehicle technology but also with activities in the area of community life on a social level. The focus here is on vehicle concepts for urban mobility, technologies for more sustainability, digital services and initiatives that enrich life in towns and cities with new momentum.
The consistent electrification of the model range plays the key role in the development going forward towards greater sustainability. The second key area of the future is digitalisation. MINI is cooperating with experts from Critical TechWorks in Lisbon to develop digital services and products for all markets with the aim of continuously driving forward change and improvement in urban mobility.
Smartphone integration and MINI App: driving fun and digital lifestyle combined.
In order to align the experience of mobility with the requirements of contemporary target groups and to define trends for driving fun in the future, MINI is working on pioneering developments in the area of digital services and products. Urban mobility is increasingly being transformed into an integrated component of the customer’s digital lifestyle. This is why the user experience associated with the use of the display and control system in MINI makes a major contribution to the driving fun so typical of the brand. Seamless integration of their smartphones enables MINI customers also to remain fully connected with their digital world of living in the vehicle.
The MINI App is offered for iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded by users free of charge from the Apple App Store or in the Google Play Store. The app offers continuous information on the status of the vehicle, optional remote functions such as locking and unlocking the doors and direct contact with the driver’s MINI Service Partner. The latest functions include more transparent route planning through Trip Detail Enhancement. After selecting the destination, if users click on “Display Route”, they can see the traffic situation on the planned route, the distance and the driving time directly in the MINI App. The function Fuel Prices empowers users to search for filling stations and easily compare fuel prices without having to open another app. The MINI App includes the Explore MINI Tab that continuously offers relevant and interesting editorial content about the products, services and values of the MINI brand, initially in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom. This content can be shared with other users.
MINI also defines benchmarks in the area of shared mobility. The MINI Sharing App is easily accessed using a link in the MINI App and it enables family members and friends to issue invitations to each other, provided that they also have the app. If a friend wants to use the vehicle for a certain period of time, they can use the app to send a request to the owner. This is then displayed in the calendar function of the new MINI Sharing App and the owner can confirm and manage the request there. After approval has been given, the vehicle can be unlocked, started and locked using the smartphone.
Digital technology for a community platform and for typical MINI individualisation.
MINI also makes use of the opportunities offered by digitalisation to enhance the community activities typical of the brand. MINI fans across the world exchange views extensively with each other, in a dialogue that often extends beyond models, vehicle segments and national borders. At the same time, they are also open to digital technology and make use of it for lively and spirited communication with each other. MINI gears the digital services it develops closely to the interests of these target groups. The future expansion stage of the MINI App is growing into a community platform. The users can take advantage of services from MINI in this digital ecosystem and at the same time get in touch with each other. The MINI App will be transformed into a digital platform that deepens the relationship between driver and vehicle and strengthens the community of MINI fans.
New opportunities typical for MINI are continually being created in the area of individualisation as a result of digitalisation. In the next model generation of MINI, the instrument panel located in the interior will have surfaces acting as “canvases” that can be tailored by the customer to suit their requirements using the vehicle’s control system. Various colours and patterns can be created on these surfaces by projection. This enables each driver to create their very own personal interior – to match their individual style since they are able to refresh it whenever they want.
Progressing new impulses through cooperation with start-ups.
The MINI start-up accelerator URBAN-X has been working with start-up companies since 2016. These enterprises are aiming to use their innovations to make life in towns and cities better, more agreeable, more convenient, more sustainable or simply an improved experience. Since the start of this venture, more than 70 start-ups from different countries have already been through the accelerator programme.
The founders of the selected start-ups are supported in developing their business model further in a creative exchange with designers, engineers and developers from MINI. The innovations brought about in the course of this process relate to some of the most urgent urban challenges, ranging from building technology and infrastructure, through mobility and energy supply to public health and services for citizens.
5. BIG LOVE FOR THE BRAND. MINI MODEL RANGE,
PRODUCTION AND MARKET PRESENCE WITH CLEAR ALIGNMENT ON PROFITABLE GROWTH.
The realignment of the model range, the expansion of production capacities and conquering new target groups and markets are the focus of the strategy that allows MINI to create the enablers for profitable growth as a global manufacturer of premium cars. The strategy will empower MINI to develop into a brand that increasingly contributes to the sustainable profitability of the BMW Group. MINI consistently concentrates on the vehicle segments, drive technologies and services of the future. There is a particular focus on electromobility, on enhanced commitment in the crossover and in the premium compact segment and on strengthening the market position in China. In this endeavour, MINI is committed to the capacity firmly embedded in the brand’s tradition of rethinking existing concepts, questioning the status quo and seizing challenges as an opportunity.
Six decades ago, the classic Mini succeeded in impressing different target groups with driving fun and creative use of space in a variety of different ways. The spectrum of developments ranged from the Mini Van with expanded cargo capacities to the exclusive versions Wolseley Hornet and Riley Elf. Furthermore, only about one year after the debut of the revolutionary little car, the Mini Cooper was already on the scene – the basis for enhanced driving fun on the road and subsequent success in motor sport.
Once again after the relaunch of the brand and the commencement of sales for the modern MINI 20 years ago, the typical attributes of the new premium compact were soon being transferred to other model versions. The current model range in the small car segment comprises the models MINI 3-door, MINI 5-door and MINI Convertible. Furthermore, MINI succeeded in penetrating the premium compact segment. This is where the equally practical and extravagant six-door MINI Clubman and the MINI Countryman as robust all-rounders in the popular crossover style deliver the go-kart feeling typical of the brand so that it can also be experienced in the realms beyond urban mobility. In addition, the MINI community’s awareness of individual style is also taken into account now and in the future with attractive editions and exclusive small series.
The sub-brand John Cooper Works has now been integrated under the umbrella of MINI and it is represented with two extremely sporty models in both the small-car and compact segment. The MINI John Cooper Works GP (combined fuel consumption: 7.3 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 167 g/km) produced in a small series specifically embodies intense passion for motor sport powered by its 225 kW/306 hp four-cylinder turbo engine.
Consistent electrification, typical MINI driving fun.
In parallel with this, the characteristic MINI feeling is enriching the world of electromobility. The roadmap to this is smoothed by a plug-in hybrid model based on the MINI Countryman. In 2019, the MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 1.7 l/100 km, combined electricity consumption: 15.5 – 14.8 kWh/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 47 – 39 g/km in compliance with WLTP) alone represented a share of five percent of total sales for the brand on vehicles with electrified drive. Only a few months later and after the launch of the all-electric MINI Cooper SE (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km, combined electricity consumption: 17.6 – 15.2 kWh/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km in compliance with WLTP), this share doubled to ten percent of all new registrations of the brand. In the first half year of 2021, the proportion of electrified models in total global sales of the British premium brand had already reached more than 15 percent.
In 2023, MINI will present the first model of a new generation of purely electrically powered vehicles. The future core portfolio of electric cars will include the MINI 3-door and a crossover model in both the small-car and in the premium compact segment. The brand’s small-car models and a crossover model in the premium compact segment also provide a parallel choice powered by conventional combustion engines. Cars with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines will continue to be an ideal solution in future for target groups and regions where the mobility requirements are not met or not yet met with all-electric drivetrains. MINI is assuming that electric vehicles will already make up 50 percent of total global sales of MINI by 2027. Already in 2025, the last new MINI model powered with a combustion engine will come onto the market. At the beginning of the 2030s, MINI will be an all-electric brand.
Consistent electrification also presents new perspectives for the John Cooper Works brand. MINI is working intensively on concepts for electric John Cooper Works models. This brand was inspired by intense passion for motor sport and the objective is to transfer the performance character to electromobility. This approach will combine sustainability and extreme sportiness in a unique way.
Model offensive in the crossover and in the premium compact segment.
Another component in the strategy for profitable growth is the enhanced commitment by MINI in the class of crossover models. This enables MINI to combine driving fun so typical of the brand in this segment with sustainable drivetrain technology. In order to be able to benefit even more intensively than previously from global growth in the vehicle class, MINI will also offer a crossover model in the small-car segment, which will only be available with a purely electric drivetrain. 2023 will see the production launch of the successor to the current MINI Countryman, which is e available with an electrified drive and a combustion engine.
Today, MINI already achieves around 40 percent of global extremely successful in the premium compact segment. It will bvehicle sales with models for the premium compact segment. The successor to the current MINI Countryman is geared towards making more extensive use of this potential than has been the case to date. Furthermore, MINI is working on the development of a new vehicle concept for the premium compact segment. This will meet the wishes of many customers for space and comfort, and increased variability. A host of creative solutions in this area were presented with the MINI Vision Urbanaut. The vehicle provides a particularly fascinating vision with its especially sustainable interior supporting versatile uses and the selection of materials and functionality. The study transfers the typical MINI principle of creative use of space to the future of urban mobility. This vehicle concept therefore meets the claim to pack maximum driving fun, available space and individuality typical of MINI onto the smallest road footprint in the competitive environment.
New production locations, strengthened commitment in China.
The world’s biggest automotive market in China continues to undergo dynamic growth and its importance for MINI will increase significantly in the future. At the present time, around ten percent of all new vehicles of the brand produced are delivered to customers in China. In order to take part in the positive development of the market in China and to have the capability to sell a significantly higher number of cars, MINI will soon move from the status of an import brand to a locally produced car brand.
From 2023 onwards, the new models of the small-car segment developed for e-mobility will be produced in China. Production will be located at the newly constructed automobile plant in the east of China. MINI will use the cars produced there to meet the increasing demand in China and the other global markets for local, emission-free driving fun. The cooperation with the Chinese partner is based on a clearly defined principle: Production follows the market. MINI will be able to serve the growing Chinese automotive market with locally produced cars and at the same time keep production stable at other production facilities.
Production of the next generation MINI Countryman will also be launched in 2023 and the car will be built at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig, making it the first MINI Made in Germany. All other MINI models will be produced at the MINI Plant in Oxford, which remains the heart of MINI production. The United Kingdom will continue to be the home of the MINI brand.
