Women Driving Auto Industry’s Technology Advances Making history in Propulsion, Infotainment and Communication
DETROIT – General Motors CEO Mary Barra says the automotive industry will experience more dramatic change in the next decade than it has in the past 50 years. In a male-dominated industry, women engineers are leading the way in some of the technological advances that could make Barra’s prediction true.
Electrified vehicles, infotainment and software development, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication are critical to changing the way we drive. Here are three women driving those advances:
Trista Schieffer, Lead Development Engineer for Battery Electric Vehicles
While gasoline-powered cars remain the top sellers, electric vehicles are becoming mainstream. At GM, the Chevrolet Volt, Spark EV, Cadillac ELR and the forthcoming battery-power car based on the Chevy Bolt concept are part of GM’s commitment to manufacture 500,000 vehicles a year globally with some form of electrification in 2017. In addition to extended-range electric and pure EV, technologies include start-stop, eAssist and hybrid.
Trista Schieffer is responsible for making sure everything works together to meet the customer expectations of an electric vehicle.
“I love problem solving,” said Schieffer. “I collaborate with people to deliver efficient solutions to solve ride, handling, noise, vibration, comfort, storage, heating, cooling, safety, energy efficiency – all aspects of a vehicle. Together we make sure the parts and systems are integrated so the vehicle performs in the manner our customers anticipate. As vehicles rely less and less on traditional fuel systems – or, in certain cases, not at all – we face new challenges.”
Rebecca Roth, Infotainment Product Owner
A key part of the connected car is infotainment that allows occupants to do practically anything on wheels they can do on solid ground. Rebecca Roth helps develop software to safely integrate drivers’ lives into the ride.
Part of this work includes helping develop software for the Smart Grid, an intelligent system that allows two-way communication between the electric company and the homeowner or their electric vehicles – picking charging times from right now to off hours when electricity use is lower and costs less.
“We’re developing software to make everything simpler and greener,” said Roth. “As a coder, I love it when software can make a person’s life easier and make the world a better place.”
Jessica Moreno, Program Manager, V2V Security Credential Management
In the not-too-distant future, our cars will be able to talk to each other, helping to avoid crashes and traffic jams. The 2017 Cadillac CTS is expected to be the first vehicle in the U.S. to implement vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, technology.
Jessica Moreno and her team are working so that when that day arrives, only the necessary information is shared.
“The software that we’re developing helps certify that a vehicle is a trusted and reliable source of information thereby allowing it to communicate with other vehicles on the road,” Moreno explains. “I have two small children and vehicle safety is extremely important to me.”

General Motors to Change Business Model in Russia
DETROIT – General Motors today announced plans to change its business model in Russia. GM will focus on the premium segment of the Russian market with Cadillac and U.S.-built iconic Chevrolet products such as the Corvette, Camaro and Tahoe. The Chevrolet brand will minimize its presence in Russia and the Opel brand will leave the market by December 2015.
“This change in our business model in Russia is part of our global strategy to ensure long-term sustainability in markets where we operate,” said GM President Dan Ammann. “This decision avoids significant investment into a market that has very challenging long-term prospects.”
Opel Group CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said, “We do not have the appropriate localization level for important vehicles built in Russia and the market environment does not justify a major investment to further localize.”
The GM Auto plant in St. Petersburg will halt production by the middle of 2015. GM is planning to idle the plant. Furthermore, the contract assembly of Chevrolet vehicles at GAZ will be discontinued in 2015.
The GM-AVTOVAZ joint venture will continue to build and market the current generation Chevrolet NIVA. GM’s global luxury brand Cadillac will be set up for growth in Russia over the next several years as it prepares for numerous product introductions.
Chevrolet and Opel will work closely with their dealer networks in Russia to define future steps while ensuring the company will honor its obligations to existing customers in the coming years. “We can assure our customers that we will continue to provide warranty, parts and services for their Chevrolet and Opel vehicles. We want to thank our customers and dealers for their loyalty to the Chevrolet and Opel brands,” said Neumann.
“We had to take decisive action in Russia to protect our business. We confirm our outlook to return the European business to profitability in 2016 and stick to our long-term goals as defined in our DRIVE!2022 strategy,” said Neumann. By 2022, the company plans to raise its market share in total Europe to 8 percent and to reach a profit margin of 5 percent.
As a result of the decision to change the business model in Russia, GM expects to record net special charges of up to approximately $600 million primarily in the first quarter of 2015. The special charges include sales incentives, dealer restructuring, contract cancellations and severance-related costs. Approximately $200 million of the net special charges will be non-cash expenses.

GM Announces Disciplined Capital Allocation Framework To Improve business performance
DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced a comprehensive capital allocation framework, as improving business performance and strong capital discipline enable increased returns to shareholders. GM said a foundational element of its approach will be to return all available free cash flow to shareholders while it maintains an investment-grade balance sheet underpinned by a target cash balance of $20 billion.
GM also announced that its Board of Directors authorized the initial repurchase of $5 billion in GM shares to begin immediately and conclude before the end of 2016. GM in February announced its intent to increase its quarterly stock dividend to $0.36 per share effective in the second quarter of 2015 as part of the Board’s regularly scheduled second quarter 2015 dividend declaration process, which would result in an expected dividend payout of approximately $5 billion through year-end 2016.
”As we continue to execute on our plan to become the most valued automotive company, our track record of improved operating performance, strong earnings momentum, and disciplined capital investments provide the foundation for a comprehensive capital allocation framework,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “We will continue to invest in innovative technologies and world-class vehicles that will deliver sustained profitable growth and maximize returns to shareholders.”
GM’s capital allocation framework encompasses three core principles:
High-Return Investment in the Business – GM previously stated it expects capital expenditures in 2015 of $9 billion to invest in future growth, including a more aggressive vehicle launch cadence in the coming years. GM will reinvest in its business with the objective of driving 20 percent or higher return on invested capital (ROIC) through investments in world-class vehicles and leading technology. The company plans to disclose its ROIC performance each quarter beginning with its first quarter 2015 report. The company expects this disciplined capital deployment will strengthen and grow GM’s brands and drive improved financial performance and will result in capital spending in the range of 5–5.5 percent of its annual revenue in the future.
Maintain an Investment-Grade Balance Sheet – GM intends to maintain an investment-grade balance sheet, including a target cash balance of $20 billion. GM believes maintaining an investment-grade balance sheet is critical to support long-term growth and increased earnings at GM Financial, which is a catalyst for improved automotive sales and profitability.
Return Capital to Shareholders – Beyond reinvesting in the business and maintaining an investment grade balance sheet, the company expects to return all available free cash flow to shareholders. Starting in January 2016, GM will develop its annual capital return plans and communicate them to the market during the first quarter of each year.
In 2014, the company established an executive compensation program that aligns management incentives with ROIC and total shareholder return. GM said it is committed to providing greater clarity around its compensation program and will continue to evaluate the program to ensure that strong linkage.
GM reaffirmed that in 2015 it expects its total earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) adjusted and EBIT-adjusted margin to increase, compared to 2014, after adjusting 2014 for the impact of recall costs. The company reiterated that it is on track to meet its 2016 financial targets to achieve EBIT-adjusted margins in North America of 10 percent; to return to profitability in Europe; and to maintain strong margins in China. It also reaffirmed its long-term strategic plan to achieve 9–10 percent EBIT-adjusted margins by early next decade.

Goodyear Concept Tires Offer a Glimpse of the Future…Visionary tire technologies showcased at Geneva Motor Show
GENEVA, Switzerland, – Two groundbreaking concept tires unveiled by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at this week’s 85th Geneva International Motor Show could radically change the role of car tires in the future.
Though the two tires are concept products, the futuristic technologies stretch the imagination and provide a glimpse of what practical innovations may be on the horizon.
The first concept – named “BHO3” – offers the possibility of charging the batteries of electric cars by transforming the heat generated by the rolling tire into electrical energy. The second concept – named “Triple Tube” – contains three tubes that adjust tire inflation pressure in response to changing road conditions, delivering new levels of performance and versatility.
“These concept tires reimagine the role that tires may play in the future,” said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief technical officer. “We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile.”
Additional details on the two concept tires:
BHO3
This tire generates electricity through the action of materials in the tire that capture and transform the energy created by heat when it flexes as it rolls during normal driving conditions. The materials used would optimize the tire’s electricity generation capabilities as well as its rolling resistance.
As demand for electric cars grows, this technology has the potential to significantly contribute to the solution of future mobility challenges. This visionary tire technology could eliminate the vehicle-range anxiety motorists may have with electric cars.
TRIPLE TUBE
This tire features three internal tubes within the tire. Tubes are located beneath the tread and near the inboard and outboard shoulders of the tire as well as the center. The tire relies on an internal pump that moves air from the main air chamber to the three individual air chambers, or tubes. The tire automatically adjusts – on its own – to three different positions based on road conditions.
. The Eco/Safety position – with maximum inflation in all three tubes – offers reduced rolling resistance.
. The Sporty position – with reduced inflation within the inboard shoulder tube – gives drivers dry handling through an optimized contact patch.
. The Wet Traction position – with maximized inflation in the center tube – provides high aquaplaning resistance through a raised tread in the center of the tire.
Although these tires are future concepts, Zekoski says they represent an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy, instilling a forward-looking, market-back mindset in the company’s research and development teams.
“It is more important than ever for us to stay firmly rooted in our market-back innovation process, which calls on us to focus on, and anticipate, the rapidly evolving needs of our customers,” said Zekoski.
Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies. It employs approximately 67,000 people and manufactures its products in 50 facilities in 22 countries around the world. Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry. General Motors Expects Improved Profitability in 2015
DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) expects its total earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) adjusted and EBIT-adjusted margin to increase in 2015, compared to 2014, after adjusting 2014 for the impact of recall costs. The company also anticipates improved automotive results in all regions.
This outlook is based on modest global industry growth expected in 2015, which will result primarily from continued growth in China, Europe and the United States, and ongoing launches of key vehicles.
CEO Mary Barra, President Dan Ammann, and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Chuck Stevens shared this outlook with investor analysts attending the Deutsche Bank 2015 Global Auto Industry Conference in Detroit.
GM reiterated it is on track to meet its previously announced 2016 financial targets to achieve EBIT-adjusted margins in North America of 10 percent; to return to profitability in Europe, and to maintain strong margins in China.
The company also said its plan puts it on the path to achieve 9- to 10-percent margins by early next decade. The strategic plan, shared during the Global Business Conference in October 2014, includes several major initiatives: lead in product and technology; grow the Chevrolet and Cadillac brands globally; continue growing in China; continue growing GM Financial, and deliver core operating efficiencies.
“We had a pivotal year in 2014, outlining a customer-focused strategic plan for the company and delivering on our commitments by achieving strong core operating performance,” Barra said. “We’ll build on this momentum in 2015 and continue executing our plan to become the most-valued automotive company.”
Among key accomplishments for 2014, Barra noted the following:
Earned the most J.D. Power Initial Quality Study awards for second consecutive year in the United States.
Launched more models in North America with 4G LTE mobile broadband than all other automakers combined.
GM and its joint ventures sold a record 3.5 million vehicles in China, up
12.0 percent from 2013.
Opel/Vauxhall market share in Europe grew for the second year in a row, including increases in 12 European markets.
Achieved five straight quarters of EBIT-adjusted margin growth in North America through the third quarter of 2014 (excluding recalls).
Standard & Poor’s upgraded GM and GM Financial to investment grade.
Returned $2.0 billion to common stock shareholders through dividends.
To support its future growth, GM plans to increase capital expenditures to approximately $9 billion in 2015, reflecting increased investments in products and technologies.
“Overall, 2014 was a very solid year in which we met expectations on core operating performance, despite a number of significant headwinds,” Stevens said.
“Importantly, improvements in 2015 will keep us firmly on track to meet our near-term objectives and demonstrate solid progress toward our targeted margins of 9 to 10 percent by early next decade.”
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. Avenir’s Design-driven Global Collaboration Buick Concept Developed with GM’s Australia, Michigan Studios
DETROIT – The Buick Avenir concept announced today ahead of the North American International Auto Show represents a collaboration of General Motors’ global designers and fabricators, who worked between studios in Australia and the United States to develop the striking design statement.
More than 100 designers, sculptors and fabricators at GM’s design studio near Melbourne, in Australia, and Buick’s North American design center, in Warren, Mich., contributed to the project, which leverages Buick’s styling legacy to explore a vision for a modern flagship sedan.
“The Buick Avenir concept showcases the very best of GM’s advanced design talent and capabilities,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “Developing a concept between studios on opposite sides of the earth is challenging and the Avenir demonstrates how Buick’s strong design heritage linked the teams with a singular vision.”
Approximately 10,000 miles and 16 time zones separated the Melbourne and Detroit-area studios. Designers shared their renderings and communicated via live conference in the middle of the day in Detroit and the beginning of the next day in Melbourne.
“As a brand with one the richest histories of design, Buick’s legacy is recognized and revered around the world,” said Welburn. “The designers in Australia understood the essence of Buick’s design language just as well as those in America, which fostered a more cohesive collaboration between teams, with seamless integration.”
Avenir’s classic rear-wheel drive proportion and exterior design theme originated at GM’s Australia design studio, while the interior theme was penned in the United States, with elements and unique cues, inside and out, shared by both creative staffs.
“Time and distance were variables, but the teams’ understanding of the project brief and the sculptural essence of Buick transcended the time zones,” said Michael Simcoe, vice president of design, GM International Operations. “GM’s global design studios are very well connected and we contribute to each other’s projects all the time. There is a tremendous understanding of the brand’s design language and passion for the future of the portfolio.”
The Avenir concept’s signature sweep-spear body side motif and nod to the “boat-tail” styling of the 1971-73 Riviera are modern interpretations of classic Buick cues proposed by Lead Designer Warrack Leach and the Australia-based staff.
The designers were given the freedom to explore form language, graphic elements and interface. The interior studios proposed a variety of ideas and, in the end, rallied around the sculpture in the interior sketch by Lead Creative Designer Blake Allen in the North American design center.
Construction of the concept took place Down Under, with the support of GM’s fabrication team, which overcame the time-zone challenge with precise communications and in-house craftsmanship.
“Simply put, Avenir is a beautiful piece of sculpture, delivered on a premium proportion that acknowledges the Buick design heritage in a very progressive way,” said Simcoe. “It has been a wonderful opportunity for all involved.”
Buick is an international modern luxury brand offering vehicles with sculpted designs, luxurious interiors and thoughtful personal technologies, along with responsive-yet-efficient performance. Volvo Completes the Acquisition of 45% of Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles
AB Volvo has completed the acquisition of 45% of the Chinese automotive manufacturer, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles Co., Ltd. The purchase consideration amounted to RMB 5.5 billion.

As announced earlier, AB Volvo signed an agreement in January 2013 with the Chinese automotive manufacturer, Dongfeng Motor Group Company Limited (DFG), to acquire 45% of a subsidiary of DFG, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles Co., Ltd (DFCV). DFCV includes most of Dongfeng’s operations in heavy-duty and medium-duty commercial vehicles. To implement the transaction, a number of conditions had to be fulfilled, including approval from the Chinese competition authority and other relevant authorities. All approvals have been received. This transaction will significantly strengthen the Volvo Group’s position in medium-duty trucks while the Group will become one of the world’s largest manufacturers of both medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks.
“This strategic alliance is a real milestone and entails a fundamental change in the Volvo Group’s opportunities in the Chinese truck market, which is the largest in the world,” says Volvo’s President and CEO, Olof Persson. “At the same time, it will provide us with the opportunity to become involved in growing DFCV’s international business in a manner that will benefit us and our Chinese partner.”
In 2013, DFCV’s pro-forma sales amounted to RMB 35 billion (SEK 37 billion) and the pro-forma operating income to RMB 950 million (SEK 1 billion). The total Chinese market for heavy-duty trucks amounted to about 774,000 vehicles in 2013, while the corresponding figure for the medium-duty truck market was 286,000 vehicles. DFCV had a leading position in both the heavy-duty and medium-duty segments, with sales of 120,600 heavy-duty trucks and 51,000 medium-duty trucks, corresponding to market shares of 15.6 and 17.8%, respectively.
During the first three quarters of 2014, DFCV’s sales amounted to RMB 26 billion (SEK 28 billion) and the operating profit to RMB 1.1 billion (SEK 1.2 billion). During the same period, DFCV sold 85,000 heavy-duty and 31,000 medium-duty trucks. On September 30, 2014, DFCV had a net financial asset of RMB 3 billion (SEK 3.6 billion). (2014 un-audited)
AB Volvo’s ownership in DFCV is expected to be recognized as an associated company and will be consolidated as of January 2015 according to the equity method and reported in the trucks segment. The payment of the purchase consideration will impact the Group’s cash flow and net financial debt in the first quarter of 2015 by approximately SEK 7 billion. However, as the purchase consideration has been hedged, the net amount paid for the ownership in DFCV is approximately SEK 5.6 billion.
Information about the inauguration ceremony and press conference:
On January 26, 2015, an inauguration ceremony will be held in Shiyan in China to mark the conclusion of the transaction. In connection with the ceremony, a press conference will also be organized including representatives from DFCV, DFG and the Volvo Group. The ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Chinese time, followed by a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Media wishing to be present, please contact the Volvo Group’s press department.

Jaguar Land Rover Announces 1,300 New UK Jobs To Accelerate Leadership In Lightweight Vehicle Manufacturing
Detroit, USA: Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to create 1,300 new jobs as it continues to accelerate its industry-leading expertise in aluminium and lightweight technologies. The news comes following confirmation that the UK’s largest manufacturing investor will add a further new Jaguar model to its product portfolio. The Jaguar performance crossover, set to go on sale in 2016, follows the Jaguar XE into the new facilities within the world-renowned Solihull plant.
This latest announcement from the Detroit auto show will see Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull manufacturing plant continue to develop its world-class capability in aluminium vehicle construction for which the company is synonymous. It also marks the start of an incredible year for the British manufacturer who will deliver 12 significant product actions in the next 12 months alone.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr. Ralf Speth said: “Today’s announcements once again demonstrate our commitment to the UK and the advancement of a high-tech, high skilled, manufacturing-led economy.
“Jaguar Land Rover is committed to delivering more great products. It is that innovation and relentless quest for new technologies that sets our products apart. We want to offer customers greater choice, with even more exciting vehicles, crafted with that special British flair. We want to improve the quality of life for our customers and for our own employees, creating opportunities for more people to be part of the Jaguar Land Rover experience.”
To support the introduction of its new aluminium and lightweight technologies Jaguar Land Rover has already invested £1.5bn. The new facilities represent the largest single investment in the Solihull plant in its 70 year history and created an impressive ‘factory within a factory’. Incorporating Europe’s largest aluminum body shop and final assembly hall – collectively the size of 22 football pitches, the new state-of-the-art facilities bring the Jaguar brand to Solihull for the first time, and continues to showcase the company’s pioneering leadership in aluminum vehicle construction which dates back to 2003 with the introduction of the seventh generation Jaguar XJ.
As a result of the continued developments at Solihull, Jaguar Land Rover is creating an additional 1,300 new jobs at the site. Applications for the new roles are now being accepted and following its commitment to enhancing employment opportunities for former service personnel in the wake of the Invictus Games, Jaguar Land Rover is welcoming applications from military personnel who are leaving or have left the services.
The expansion of the Solihull site is the outward expression of the continued drive to reinvigorate every aspect of the company. Today, the plant builds world-renowned vehicles such as the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Discovery and is home to the iconic Defender. Most recently, the site has welcomed the first Jaguar in its history, with the introduction of the new Jaguar XE, which begins production in the Spring.
Jaguar Land Rover continues on its path of measured and sustainable growth with record full year retail sales in 2014 of 462,678, double that of 2008. A 2014/15 fiscal year investment of £3.75bn in product creation has seen the introduction of a host of new and exciting products and business expansion. The company’s headcount has increased to 32,000, 10,000 more than were employed just four years ago.
Ends
Jaguar Land Rover is a strong, healthy and vibrant company, well positioned strategically and financially for sustainable growth.
Jaguar Land Rover is over-proportionally investing; the company will spend £3.5 – £3.7 billion on new product creation and capital expenditure in its financial year ending 31st March 2015 and has invested a total of over £10 billion in the last five years.
The company plans 50 product actions over the next five years, of which twelve will be in 2015 alone.
Jaguar Land Rover’s products are in high demand around the globe. Its sales have more than doubled since 2009: in 2014 the company retailed 462,678 vehicles, a nine per cent increase on 2013.
Jaguar Land Rover’s turnover has almost trebled to £19.4 billion in its financial year ending 31st March 2014, with a Profit Before Tax of £2.5 billion.
The company’s headcount has doubled over the past few years to more than 32,000 globally, of which 30,500 are in the UK.
The 1,300 jobs announced for Solihull today are in addition to the 1,700 created in 2013 for the introduction of the Jaguar XE.
The workforce at Solihull has nearly doubled over the past three years, with 9,450 currently employed there.
Last year, Jaguar Land Rover opened its Engine Manufacturing Centre at Wolverhampton, UK, a £500 million investment, which will employ 1,400 when operating at full capacity.
The breakthrough Jaguar performance crossover will be manufactured at the world-renowned Solihull plant. The Jaguar XE, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Discovery and Defender are also built at this facility.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque are manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood plant.
The Jaguar F-TYPE, XF and XJ are built at Castle Bromwich.
In 2014 Jaguar Land Rover opened its first ever overseas manufacturing facility in Changshu, China and started construction of its second, in Brazil.

Monthly Vehicle Health Report and Vehicle Health Alert
Maintaining a vehicle’s healthy status has become much easier with Monthly Vehicle Health Report, a monthly report that is sent to customers’ personal email accounts informing them about their vehicle’s performance status. At a glance, vehicle owners can review and monitor the status of a vehicle’s key systems, including powertrain, oil and fluids, brakes, suspension and safety systems.
Once a month, the vehicle owner will receive an email report that shows the status of their vehicle’s key systems. Within the email, owners will find color-coded icons that will inform of an action that may be needed, such as a green check icon that signifies that no issues are found, a yellow exclamation point will signify that action is suggested and a red x will signify that immediate action is needed. If the vehicle owner would like additional information, they can also login to the owner website where a more comprehensive and detailed report is available.
In addition to the Monthly Health Report, Uconnect Access customers will have access to Vehicle Health Alert. With this service, vehicle owners will immediately receive an email alert that is sent if one of the key powertrain, oil and fluids, brakes, suspension or safety systems requires attention. Once a warning light of one of these key systems appears in the vehicle dashboard, an alert will be sent immediately to the vehicle owner’s email account that explains what the warning light means, how the vehicle is affected and what action needs to be taken.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra Sees U.S. Auto Economy Expanding in 2015
DETROIT – General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra said today that the company expects light vehicle sales in the United States to reach a range of 16.5 million to 17.0 million units in 2015. The last time industry sales reached 17 million units was in 2001. The industry delivered 16.5 million light vehicles last year.
“The U.S. economy and vehicle sales have been rebounding since 2009, and we believe there is still plenty of room for the auto industry to grow,” Barra said. “The strength of the labor market, better job security and the recovery in home prices have consumers feeling pretty good about the future, so we expect people will continue to replace their older cars and trucks. The recent sharp drop in fuel prices and rising incomes should only add to their confidence.
“The most important change we see coming is the return of younger and first-time buyers to the market.”
Strong real GDP growth is expected to create new job opportunities in 2015 – as many as 200,000 new jobs per month. That should drive higher labor force participation and better job prospects for recent college graduates.
Third party studies reinforce this view, including the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which said in its Job Outlook 2015 report that employers plan to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2015 for their U.S. operations than they did from the Class of 2014.
“A growing jobs market and new vehicles that exceed expectations for fuel economy and high technology are the best ways to rekindle the love affair America’s youth have historically had with cars and trucks,” Barra said.
Barra said Chevrolet is particularly well positioned to attract new customers in 2015, since it has reentered the mid-size pickup segment with the Colorado and launched seven small cars and crossovers in the last four years.
These include the Spark, Sonic and Cruze, which all posted their best-ever annual sales in 2014, as well as the Trax, which began arriving in showrooms in December.
The Trax is a small SUV that offers seating for five with available all-wheel drive and EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 32 mpg on the highway. It also offers an available 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Siri Eyes Free control of the audio system with compatible smart phones.
The emerging small-SUV segment in the United States is estimated to grow more than 80 percent in the next few years. Trax is already on sale in 67 global markets, where it has generated approximately 188,000 sales since its 2012 introduction.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands.

General Motors Bi-Fuel Chevrolet Impala Tested with Bullets and Bonfires
DETROIT – Being able to take a bullet and withstand fires from multiple directions sets apart the compressed natural gas (CNG) tank in the 2015 Bi-fuel Chevrolet Impala from less-strenuous testing of other natural gas-powered vehicles.
A large piece of cast aluminum helps protect the tank valve and connection from certain side impacts. Sheet metal plates on either side of the tank help protect it from loose objects in the trunk or rear seat.
“We designed this system for those ‘what if’ situations,” said Nichole Kraatz, Impala chief engineer. ”The customer shouldn’t even know it’s there. They shouldn’t even think about it. CNG should just be another fuel they use to power their vehicle.”
Durability and safety testing at the tank’s normal operating pressure of 3,600 PSI and higher subjected it to normal and extreme situations, exceeding federal requirements and CNG industry guidelines. For example:
The industry-standard Bonfire Test confirms the CNG tank’s pressure relief valves are operational and help prevent the tank from rupturing in a fire. In addition to placing the tank about four inches above a steady 800-degree Fahrenheit fire, General Motors’ engineers added trunk, back seat and underbody fires to test the pressure relief valves’ ability to sense heat on all sides of the tank. And the tests were done at two different fuel levels.
In the Penetration Test, the tank is filled to its service pressure and is shot with a 7.62 mm armor piercing bullet. In order to pass the test, the bullet has to pass completely through one side of the tank without exiting out the other side. The goal is to have the tank maintain the bullet hole only as the weak structural point, without rupturing.
Front barrier, side impact and rear impact crash tests were conducted on the Bi-Fuel Impala. Some aftermarket CNG-conversion kit manufacturers conduct only a barrier test.
The tank also undergoes long-term structural integrity tests equivalent to 15,000 pressure cycles and hydrostatic bursting tests of up to 8,100 PSI.
The Bi-fuel Impala – a 2015 “Green Car of the Year®” finalist – is the auto-industry’s only manufacturer-produced full-size sedan in North America that runs on both CNG and gasoline. It is available to order now through all Chevrolet dealerships in the US and Canada with delivery expected at the end of this year.
The all-steel trunk-mounted CNG tank holds approximately 7.8 gallons, sufficient for about 150 miles of driving after which the Impala seamlessly switches to gasoline power.
The complete CNG system is covered by Chevrolet’s five-year, 100,000-mile – whichever comes first – limited powertrain warranty and can be serviced at Chevrolet dealerships throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world’s largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.9 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. 2015 Chrysler 200 Earns Five-Star Overall Safety Rating From U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Auburn Hills, Mich. – The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Five stars is the highest possible safety rating given by NHTSA.
The Chrysler brand’s all-new midsize sedan scored five stars in NHTSA tests that evaluate performance in:
Frontal collisions
Side-impacts simulating a two-vehicle collision
Side-impacts simulating a single-vehicle collision with a pole
These latest test results complement the Top Safety Pick+ rating previously given to the 2015 Chrysler 200 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
“The Chrysler 200’s superior performance in such safety tests validates our continuing efforts to deliver the latest advancements in both passive and active safety technologies,” says Scott Kunselman, Chrysler Group’s Senior Vice President and Head of Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance.
Passive safety systems help mitigate the effects of a crash; active systems help drivers prevent crashes.
“The 200’s robust construction helps absorb energy in the event of a collision,” Kunselman says. “This benefits occupant protection.”
Approximately 65 percent of the all-new Chrysler 200’s body structure consists of hot-stamped, high-strength, advanced high-strength and boron steels. Such construction helps maintain the vehicle’s integrity during collisions.
“The 200’s active-safety equipment shatters the barrier that once restricted advanced driver-assist systems to expensive luxury-brand vehicles,” Kunselman adds.
Among the active safety systems available on the 2015 Chrysler 200 is Full-speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus. It combines camera and radar technologies, which is a first for a mainstream-brand mid-size sedan.
Such redundancy affords greater object-detection precision. Similar systems on competitive vehicles feature one technology or the other.
Full-speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus provides alerts, autonomous braking and, under certain circumstances, slows or brings the all-new Chrysler 200 to a full stop when a frontal collision appears imminent.
NHTSA’s safety ratings web page awards special designations to vehicles equipped with active safety systems, though the systems do not factor into the ratings. Collision-warning systems are a prerequisite to achieve IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status.
The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 boasts 60 safety and security features – the most in its class. Among these is the segment-exclusive Electronic Park Brake (EPB) with SafeHold.
Offered as standard equipment, EPB with SafeHold automatically activates the 200’s parking brake if the driver’s seatbelt is unlatched and his or her door is opened while forward or reverse gears are engaged. This feature is designed to prevent rollaway situations.
Other standard and available features include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), electronic roll mitigation, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, ParkSense rear backup sensors, ParkView rear backup camera, blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross Path Detection and LATCH child seat anchors.
The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 also notched four stars in NHTSA’s rollover resistance evaluation, which is calculated using vehicle dimensions. This result contributed to the car’s overall five-star rating. NHTSA is the only safety agency that evaluates rollover resistance.
Launched in May, the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 charts a new course for mid-size sedan customers. It leapfrogs expectations for a mid-size car with its elegant exterior design and thoughtful, beautifully crafted interior.
The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 delivers an exceptional driving experience, enabled by features such as a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission – which comes as standard equipment – and an available, best-in-class all-wheel-drive system.
Further, it boasts a highway-cycle fuel-economy rating of 36 miles per gallon.
The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 is designed, engineered and built with pride at Chrysler Group’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. Chrysler Group invested more than $1 billion in facility upgrades to produce the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200, including an all-new paint shop and a new, fully robotic body shop.
About Chrysler Brand
The Chrysler brand has delighted customers with distinctive designs, craftsmanship, intuitive innovation and technology all at an extraordinary value since the company was founded in 1926.
Whether it is the groundbreaking, bold design of the Chrysler 300, the simple elegance and extraordinary driving experience of the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 or the family-room-on-wheels functionality of the Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler brand vehicles reward the passion, creativity and sense of accomplishment of its owners. Beyond just exceptionally designed vehicles, the Chrysler brand has incorporated thoughtful features into all of its products, such as the innovative center console with pass through storage and sliding cup holders in the 2015 Chrysler 200, the industry-exclusive Stow ‘n Go® seating and storage system on the Chrysler Town & Country and the fuel-saving Fuel Saver Technology in the Chrysler 300.
The Chrysler brand’s succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand’s standing as the leader in design, engineering and value. The premium for the Chrysler brand is in the product, not the price.

7.8 Million Affected U.S. Vehicles, Impacted by CY 2013 and 2014 Recalls Involving Takata Airbags
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges owners of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors vehicles to act immediately on recall notices to replace defective Takata airbags. Over seven million vehicles are involved in these recalls, which have occurred as far back as 18 months ago and as recently as Monday. The message comes with urgency, especially for owners of vehicles affected by regional recalls in the following areas: Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii.
“Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures. However, we’re leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman.
Consumers that are uncertain whether their vehicle is impacted by the Takata recalls, or any other recall, can contact their manufacturer’s website to search, by their vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm whether their individual vehicle has an open recall that needs to be addressed. Owners that have been contacted by their manufacturer should contact their dealer’s service department and make arrangements for the repair. In addition, consumers can sign up for NHTSA recall alerts, which go out before recall letters are mailed by the manufacturers to the affected owners.

Hey, Doc! Sewage, Beer and Food Scraps Can Power Chevrolet’s Bi-fuel Impala
DETROIT – Trash to fuel, the stuff of the 1980s sci-fi comedy movie trilogy “Back to the Future,” is now a reality. The 2015 Bi-fuel Chevrolet Impala – not a tricked-out DeLorean – really can run on leftovers, table scraps and, oh, yeah, grains from brewing beer.
Cleveland-based quasar energy group uses organic waste to produce a renewable energy source known as biogas, which is then converted into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) – one of two fuels that can power the 2015 Chevrolet Bi-fuel Impala.
Biogas is the raw mixture of gases given off by the breakdown of organic materials kept in an oxygen-less environment. The resulting methane gas is then processed, removing all carbon dioxide and impurities to make Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). When compressed, RNG is a direct replacement for CNG.
Since biogas can be made from most organic materials, quasar insources raw materials, otherwise considered waste, from a variety of industries. For instance, its Columbus, Ohio Renewable Energy Facility processes up to 25,000 wet tons of biosolids from the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities for wastewater.
Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, contributes food waste for CNG-production after it’s been macerated in an industrial-sized InSinkErator Grind2Energy garbage disposal. And don’t forget beer: Anheuser-Busch’s Columbus brewery provides an organic by-product to quasar for conversion to methane gas.
“If you can buy renewable fuel at $1.95 per gallon while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, everybody wins,” said Mel Kurtz, president of quasar energy group. “quasar’s Columbus facility can produce 1.3 million gasoline gallon equivalents of CNG each year.”
That’s enough to fill the CNG tanks of 163,000 Bi-fuel Impalas at least once.
Though CNG fueling stations are prevalent in states like California and Oklahoma, infrastructure in some states is scarce.
“To avoid feelings of range anxiety common in owners of CNG-only vehicles, we made the Impala bi-fuel, allowing our customers to drive on CNG when available and on gasoline when it’s not,” said Nichole Kraatz, Impala chief engineer.
The CNG tank mounted in the trunk has the equivalent capacity of 7.8 gallons of gasoline, which is expected to offer approximately 150 city miles of range on compressed natural gas based on GM testing. With gasoline and compressed natural gas combined, expected range is 500 city miles based on GM testing. EPA estimates are not yet available.
Impala’s bi-fuel system seamlessly switches to gasoline power when the CNG tank is depleted. Drivers who wish to change fuels while driving can do so by simply pushing a button. A light on the instrument panel indicates when CNG is being used, and there is no interruption in the vehicle’s performance.
Operating on CNG can result in an average fuel savings of nearly $1.13 per gasoline-gallon-equivalent based on a national average of $3.24 per gallon of gasoline as reported by AAA and $2.11 per gge of CNG, reported by CNGnow. Also, CNG vehicles typically have 20 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars, according to the California Air Resources Board.
The Bi-fuel Impala is factory-built so its CNG fuel system is validated by GM and covered by GM’s three-year/36,000-mile (whichever comes first) new vehicle limited bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) limited powertrain warranty. The Bi-fuel Impala is the only bifuel-capable sedan on the market to offer a factory warranty.
When the Bi-fuel Impala goes on sale later this year, it will have a starting price of $38,210.
