The All-New 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is the First Ever SUV Released by Jaguar

MAHWAH, NJ – September 14, 2015 – The all-new 2017 Jaguar F-PACE is a medium luxury SUV designed and engineered to offer the agility, responsiveness and refinement that Jaguar cars are renowned for, together with the exceptional dynamics and everyday versatility of an SUV.
DESIGN
Designed by the same team as the C-X17 concept vehicle, the F-PACE remains true to the aesthetic of the award-winning concept. Thanks to the flexibility of the Jaguar Lightweight Aluminum Architecture, designers could work hand in hand with the engineers to determine key dimensions such as the wheelbase and track, delivering the proportions and elegant lines that distinguish it instantly as a Jaguar vehicle.
“We designed the all-new F-PACE to be first and foremost a Jaguar. That’s why it has exciting proportions, a dynamic stance, pure surfaces and a beautiful sensuality about it. Its progressive, purposeful appearance has clearly been influenced by the F-TYPE. Every Jaguar car should draw your eye from 200 meters away and I believe the presence of the all-new F-PACE on the road is second to none in this class. The Lightweight Aluminum Architecture gave us the design freedom to create a car with latent poise – a svelte car with attitude,” said Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. “It looks assertive yet not aggressive. But it’s also versatile and equipped with real-world answers to everyday questions. The all-new F-PACE is an all-weather Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings.”
The influence of the F-TYPE is instantly apparent at the rear of the F-PACE, from the design of the LED tail-lights to its muscular rear haunches. The rakish angle of the rear window belies the load space behind it. Jaguar design cues extend to the silhouette of the F-PACE, with a sleek roofline as well as short front and rear overhangs that reflect the vehicle’s agile response. The vehicle’s stance is further emphasized with the fitment of optional 22-inch diameter wheels.
Outside, the taut surfaces and clean lines of the bodysides are formed from a single sheet of aluminum – building upon the brand’s decades-long expertise in designing, engineering and manufacturing vehicles using this lightweight material. The bold, upright front grille is assertive, but also contributes to the aerodynamic efficiency of the performance SUV. The Jaguar signature power bulge extends the full length of the aluminum hood emphasizing the vehicle’s performance capabilities. Altogether, the exterior design cues from the bodyside, hood, front and rear help underscore the vehicle’s athleticism as a performance SUV.
The sleek headlights, available with adaptive full-LED technology2, feature daytime running lights with the signature Jaguar ‘J’ Blade design. The slender LED fog lights available on R-Sport trim levels were developed in-house and use TV screen optics and light tubes to deliver compact packaging, as well as an exceptionally smooth, homogeneous light source.
The F-PACE is a five seater and features a spacious, luxurious interior which utilizes premium materials, craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that gives every Jaguar vehicle its unique sense of occasion.
The ‘Sports Command’ driving position in the F-PACE provides authoritative, confidence-inspiring outward visibility2, while retaining the Jaguar-specific sports car feel; the dramatic curve of the front door top is incorporated into the dash fascia enhancing the cockpit-like feel.
The vehicle’s available leather sports seats are shaped to provide exceptional comfort and support; they are available with 14 different adjustments plus heating and cooling functions. A range of contemporary trim options are also available, including authentic metal finishes such as Meshed Aluminum and beautiful crafted veneers such as Satin Grey Ash.
The instrument panel, similar to those found in the new XE and XF, features two large, deeply-hooded analogue dials and a central TFT display, or an optional 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster featuring the choice of four visual themes and full-screen navigation.9 Ambient lighting, especially with the 10-color option, further enhances the sense of luxury.
The long, 113-inch (2,874mm) wheelbase makes ingress and egress to and from the rear seats easy, while the seat base itself was designed to allow passengers to sit further outboard; resulting in more space for three occupants to fit in the second row. The positioning of the seats, together with the height of the beltline, means that even small children enjoy a good view out. The available four-zone climate control system with B-pillar vents and the electric recline function of the rear seats adds to the passenger experience.
Driver and front seat passengers will also enjoy a center console that offers a 12V socket and up to three USB ports. The rear console can feature up to two more 12V sockets or two additional USB ports.
The focus on package efficiency also means that the F-PACE has a loadspace volume of 23-cu.ft. (650-liters) with a width of 49.4-inches (1,255mm). The 40:20:40 split rear seats allow through-loading and when folded flat, the luggage compartment offers up to 61.4-cu.ft. (1,740-liters) of space. Packaging is further enhanced by the low loading height and flat floor. The floor itself is reversible: one side is carpeted, the other rubberized – making it ideal for sports equipment or pets. The lightweight composite tailgate benefits from power opening and closing functions, and optional gesture control for hands-free operation.
ARCHITECTURE AND BODY STRUCTURE
The F-PACE is the latest Jaguar model, alongside the XE and XF, to benefit from the brand’s expertise in designing and manufacturing aluminum monocoques. In fact, the F-PACE features the largest amount of the Jaguar-developed RC5754 aluminum alloy yet; one third of the vehicle features this lightweight material which comprises up to 75 percent recycled material.
In conjunction with the brand’s Lightweight Aluminum Architecture, new features such as the composite tailgate, magnesium cross-car beam and front-end carrier contribute to its outstanding driving dynamics.
Advanced high strength steels in areas such as the rear floor, are joined using more than 2,600 self-piercing rivets, 238.8-ft (72.8 m) of structural adhesive and more than 560 spot-welds. The resulting torsional stiffness matches that of the all-new XF and, together with the advanced suspension systems, are key to the exceptional blend of ride, handling and refinement of the performance SUV.
The high-pressure diecast aluminum front suspension turrets, have been engineered to accommodate additional ground clearance and suspension travel of the vehicle. The front crossmembers are large; making them stiff to support the vehicle’s elevated, Sports Command driving position. The subframes and subframe mounting points have been engineered to contribute to greater overall stiffness without the weight and packaging penalties that come by simply adding body reinforcements. In fact, wherever possible, every bracket in the body has been optimized so that it contributes to body stiffness, as well as performing its primary function.
CHASSIS
The F-PACE has been engineered to deliver the same outstanding driving experience which sets all Jaguar vehicles apart from the competition. Using the long wheelbase of the Lightweight Aluminum Architecture helped keep the center of mass between the axles, while the chassis high stiffness benefits not only ride, but responsiveness.
“We develop every Jaguar vehicle to offer an unrivalled combination of agility and responsiveness with exceptional ride and refinement – and the all-new F-PACE is no exception,” said, Mike Cross, Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar. “Applying all of the learning from F-TYPE, the steering reacts immediately, giving a truly connected feel. The double wishbone and Integral Link suspension offers the ideal balance of precise handling and body control, making the all-new F-PACE as rewarding to drive as it is comfortable to be driven in.”
Double-wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension, as well as a sophisticated Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system2, deliver exceptional capability on varying road surfaces. Extremely stiff in camber, the double-wishbone suspension allows the front tires to develop lateral force more quickly resulting in sharper turn-in and quicker steering response from the drivers input. The suspension is also tuned to allow the tire to maintain its contact patch throughout the full range of suspension travel, enabling the tires to generate more grip; contributing to enhanced steering feel and control.
Aluminum is used almost exclusively to make the suspension as light as possible, most notably the front knuckles. The intricate, ribbed design is achieved by forging the component from cast blanks; enabling maximum stiffness for minimum weight. Among the other enhancements are bonded bushings for the tubular anti-roll bar – as well as better NVH properties, the bushing design prevents dirt ingress, improving reliability.
The result of years of advanced research and development, Integral Link is the most sophisticated and capable rear suspension system ever put into a Jaguar vehicle. Separating lateral and longitudinal stiffness, the Integral Link allows the suspension to provide the best possible comfort without compromising dynamics.
The bushings which manage longitudinal loads can be made much softer than would otherwise be possible with conventional multilink suspensions, enabling excellent energy absorption and therefore a smoother, quieter ride. At the same time, lateral stiffness can be far higher, making the vehicle more responsive. Caster stiffness has been increased over other Jaguar models, which is felt by the driver as improved stability when braking.
The upper links are aluminum forgings, while the lower arm is hollow-cast aluminum – the optimum lightweight solution for this complex part. The springs and dampers are mounted separately, allowing each to be ideally positioned for the forces acting on the suspension and contributing even more to the dynamics and refinement of the F-PACE. This design is also highly space-efficient, minimizing intrusion into the luggage compartment.
Every Jaguar vehicle is designed to provide a responsive, connected steering feel. The all-new F-PACE is no exception, as this target drove the development of every single component between the steering wheel and the tire contact patch in order to achieve the precision, response and linearity which define Jaguar steering DNA.
Among the measures taken to achieve this include adding a fifth mounting point for the steering rack, and increasing the rotational stiffness of the subframe-to-body connections. High lateral stiffness in the rear axle also helps with initial turn-in because lateral forces at the tire contact patches build very quickly. Aerodynamics have been developed to give a front:rear lift balance closer to that of a sedan than an SUV, contributing to improved feel and stability during high-speed cruising.
The Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system2 in the F-PACE benefits from the addition of closed-loop control. Specially-developed algorithms calculate the forces coming back from the road and use this information to further refine the level of assistance, making the steering even more intuitive.
The EPAS system also features a variable steering ratio – as standard. This is achieved using variable pitch gears on the rack bar and fixed pitch gears on the pinion. By changing the contact point with the rack’s gear teeth from the valleys on-center to the peaks at full lock, the more the driver turns the wheel, the more responsive the steering becomes.2
Meticulously engineered and exhaustively tested at locations around the world, each available wheel and tire combination offers an excellent balance of grip, low rolling resistance, comfort and durability. F-PACE offers a variety of different wheel and tire options; from 18-inch wheels designed specifically to reduce aerodynamic drag to 22-inch wheels which complement the performance and design of the vehicle.
The range of 22-inch wheels was developed for the F-PACE by the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations division. Produced from forged aluminum to make them lighter and stiffer, they not only help to deliver the concept-car look of the C-X17 but also contribute to the high levels of on-road dynamics and traction of the F-PACE.
Another technology first developed for F-TYPE and now applied to the F-PACE is Torque Vectoring by Braking. Designed to make the vehicle even more agile, the system can apply finely-metered braking to the inner wheels to mitigate understeer during corner entry, helping the driver to keep the vehicle on the ideal line through a turn.2 The system works predominantly on the inside rear wheel to avoid any corruption of steering feel, and as a result, system intervention is virtually transparent to the driver.
All models feature monotube dampers as standard. Not only do they contribute to a reduction in unsprung mass but they are also more responsive than conventional twin-tube dampers, and therefore offer greater ride control.
The available Adaptive Dynamics takes this to the next level. By monitoring body movement 100 times a second and wheel movement 500 times a second, the system is designed to provide continuously variable damping to suit the conditions2, delivering a comfortable ride at lower speeds and even better handling at higher speeds.3 Linked to Adaptive Dynamics, Configurable Dynamics, first developed for the F-TYPE, enables the driver to tailor the vehicle’s character by individually selecting dynamic or normal modes for the throttle mapping, transmission shift strategy, steering feel and adaptive damper setting, all using the central touchscreen.
For models equipped with the Jaguar InControl® Touch Pro™ infotainment system1, drivers also gain the Dynamic-i feature, which displays a stopwatch, g-meter and a map of accelerator pedal response.
POWERTRAIN
At launch, U.S. buyers will have their choice of a 3.0l 340hp or 380hp supercharged gasoline V6 mated to an 8-speed transmission with power being routed to all four wheels via a torque-on-demand all-wheel drive system. Later in 2016, a 180hp four cylinder Ingenium diesel engine will also be added to the model lineup. Supercharged V6 gasoline engines
The 340hp and 380hp variants of the supercharged gasoline V6 engine are shared with the F-TYPE sports car. These all-aluminum engines are characterized by their immediate throttle response, linear power delivery and unique intake and exhaust sound.
The 90-degree cylinder bank angle enables the roots-type supercharger to be neatly packaged within the vee. Together with direct injection and variable intake and exhaust valve timing, the supercharger helps the engine generate a high torque output throughout the rev range, delivering strong acceleration at all times.
Both variants are matched to eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive. The 380hp engine is exclusive to the F-PACE S models, and can launch the performance SUV from 0-60mph in only 5.1 seconds, on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.3
Ingenium diesel6: Low fuel consumption, high torque
Available later in 2016, the clean, responsive, Ingenium diesel uses state-of-the-art technologies including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to cut NOx and CO2 emissions.
Designed and manufactured in-house, this state-of-the-art, all-aluminum 2.0-liter engine produces 180hp and 317 lb.ft. of torque; delivering strong acceleration whenever the driver demands it.3 It’s highly efficient too, achieving excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.
Ingenium is one of the first diesel engines to feature variable valve timing: a phaser to the exhaust camshaft enables the after treatment system to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible, reducing emissions. The engine warms up very quickly from cold thanks to a split-cooling system featuring a variable flow coolant pump and a mapped thermostat.
The 1,800bar common rail system and highly efficient variable geometry turbocharger enable clean, quiet, efficient combustion. Using cooled low-pressure EGR in addition to high-pressure EGR reduces pumping losses and therefore improves efficiency still further. Just as importantly, it reduces peak combustion temperatures and reduces the formation of NOx.
ZF® Transmissions
The transmission in the F-PACE was developed with ZF® to deliver exceptional shift quality and efficiency. All six-cylinder engines are paired with the same 8HP70 transmission also found in the Jaguar XE, XF, XJ and F-TYPE models.
While the automatic transmission models have been developed to select the right gear at the right time depending on the mode chosen in the JaguarDrive Control™ system and according to driving style, enthusiasts will make the most of manual shift control using the steering wheel-mounted paddles. S models feature standard satin chrome-finished paddles.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
Like the F-TYPE AWD, the F-PACE features a torque-on-demand AWD system.2 Under normal driving conditions, all of the engine torque is sent to the rear axle, maintaining a rear-wheel drive character, while minimizing parasitic losses in the drivetrain. Whenever greater traction is needed, Jaguar Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD)2 is designed to ensure that precisely the right amount of torque is transferred to the front axle. This process takes no more than 165 milliseconds and is virtually transparent to the driver.
These technologies ensure that the F-PACE delivers the connected steering feel and rear-wheel drive character inherent to Jaguar dynamics DNA, together with handling and performance which fully exploits the benefits of extra traction when required. This could not be realized with a conventional, full-time AWD system.
At the heart of the system is a compact transfer case featuring a multi-plate wet clutch and chain drive to the front axle. The all-wheel drive system is incredibly quick; making the transition from 100 percent rear-bias to a 50:50 torque split in just 165 milliseconds. If there is already a proportion of torque being sent to the front axle, additional torque transfer can take as little as 100 milliseconds.
Torque distribution is controlled by the IDD module, which is integrated into the transfer case. Taking data from the vehicle’s yaw rate, lateral acceleration and steering wheel angle sensors, IDD continuously estimates not only the friction between the tires and the road surface, but also how much of the available grip is being exploited at each contact patch.
This intelligence, coupled to the extremely fast-acting transfer case, enables IDD to employ both pre-emptive and reactive control strategies, maximizing dynamics and traction. If IDD predicts that the rear axle is approaching the limit of available traction, torque will be transferred to the front axle. Torque can also be fed forwards to help mitigate oversteer by providing yaw damping. IDD is also networked to Jaguar Drive Control and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system so that torque distribution can be even further optimized.
Adaptive Surface Response
The AWD system in the F-PACE is enhanced further by the Jaguar Adaptive Surface Response (AdSR) technology. AdSR automatically adapts the maps of the throttle, transmission and DSC system according to the type of surface to maximize traction in a variety of conditions.2
Replacing Winter mode in the JaguarDrive Control system, AdSR operates throughout the vehicle’s entire speed range and is designed to enable finer optimization of the vehicle’s systems to make the most of the available traction, helping the driver to make smooth progress on challenging surfaces.2
AdSR debuted in the new XF and is further enhanced in the F-PACE, featuring three modes, one for low-traction surfaces such as snow and ice, one for medium-traction surfaces such as wet tarmac or gravel and a third mode for high-drag conditions such as deep snow and deep gravel to further exploit the vehicle’s inherent ability. The system automatically switches modes to suit the conditions, leaving the driver free to concentrate on driving.2
So whereas on ice, for example, a very progressive throttle map will be selected, a much more aggressive map is used for deep snow because the engine has to build up torque very quickly to help the vehicle to maintain momentum. If, for example, the road surface changes from a thin layer of snow to a gritted section and then to a section covered with a thick layer of snow, AdSR will select different modes for each surface.2 The transition takes place quickly – around four seconds – and seamlessly.
Inherent ability
Designed to be as light and rigid as possible, the monocoque structure also delivers the short overhangs which are not only essential to the vehicle’ outstanding proportions, but also to the maximum approach and departure angles of 25.5-deg and 25.7-deg respectively.
The ground clearance of 8.4-inches (213mm) is another advantage and one made all the more effective by the smooth underfloor which reduces aerodynamic drag. Similarly, when the architecture was developed, ECUs and other electronics modules were packaged as high up as possible to aid the remarkable 20.7-inch (525mm) wading depth of the F-PACE.2
AWD Testing
The F-PACE has been developed to offer exceptional driving dynamics but its performance on tarmac is just one of its strengths. To ensure that it also delivers in adverse road and weather conditions, the vehicle has been subjected a demanding test program, in locations including the searing heat of Dubai and the freezing cold of Northern Sweden.
More than a quarter of a million test miles were accumulated in these two regions alone, where ambient temperatures can fall as low as -40°F (-40°C) and reach as high as 122°F (50°C). Going to such measures ensures that everything from tires to climate control systems to the infotainment touch-screens function perfectly in extreme conditions.
Among the features at the Jaguar Land Rover winter proving ground in Arjeplog, Sweden are 37-miles (60km) of purpose-designed handling tracks, loops, inclines and split-friction straights. Testing in Dubai included graveled mountain passes and dry river beds known as wadis – the F-PACE is the first Jaguar to be tested in these particularly challenging environments.
This is also the first time that a Jaguar has been evaluated in the mud and ruts of the legendary Eastnor test facility in the UK; until now, only Land Rover vehicles have been developed here. It’s fitting too that the F-PACE was not assessed using existing sedan car test requirements; instead, tests were derived from the uniquely demanding standards set by the Land Rover brand.
This process meant that the engineering team could perfect the calibration of technologies such as IDD and AdSR in the most difficult and demanding conditions. The result of this exhaustive development is a luxury SUV which is designed to be capable on varying road and weather conditions including ice, deep snow, dirt roads and wet grass.2
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS
The F-PACE offers all of the technologies needed to make journeys more convenient, from traction systems to get drivers moving on low friction surfaces, to an emergency braking system.
All Surface Progress Control (ASPC)
Leveraging knowledge built up over decades of Land Rover experience in off-road technologies, ASPC delivers a step-change in capability by controlling the throttle and brakes, allowing the driver to concentrate more on the steering.2 Functioning like a low-speed cruise control, ASPC can operate between 2.2mph (3.6km/h) and 19mph (30km/h). After activating the system by pressing a button on the center console, the driver uses the cruise control switches on the steering wheel to set the maximum speed. After that, the system does the work. As well as finely controlling the throttle, ASPC uses the brakes in opposition to the throttle so that from a standstill, only very low engine torque is applied to the driven wheels. The result is smooth, controlled progress with little or no wheel spin.
Low Traction Launch
While ASPC makes the most of the vehicle’s traction capability by taking control of the throttle, some drivers want to achieve similar results while operating the throttle for themselves. The Low Traction Launch function has been designed to do this when the driver selects Low Traction Launch using the touchscreen. Once activated, it changes the throttle map to one which results in a very progressive torque response from the engine, enabling the driver to pull away smoothly.2 Like ASPC, Low Traction Launch is standard on all engines.
Stereo Camera Technologies
The F-PACE features a forward-facing stereo camera at the heart of many of its advanced driver assistance systems. Providing a highly accurate 3D view of the road ahead, the stereo camera is ideal for Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems.2 The F-PACE is the first Jaguar to offer an AEB system with a pedestrian detection function. If the system’s controller determines that a collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian is imminent, it is designed to initiate full braking automatically.2
The stereo camera also provides the intelligence for the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) systems.2 By monitoring the vehicle’s position relative to lane markings either side, LDW can help to prevent drivers from drifting out of lane by triggering a visual warning in the instrument panel and a haptic warning through the steering wheel rim. LKA can guide the driver back towards the center of the lane by applying a small amount of counter-steering through the electric power-assisted steering system. The torque applied to the steering wheel can be easily over-ridden by the driver.
Failure to stay in lane is often due to a lack of concentration but driver fatigue can also be a factor. Such tiredness may be characterized by periods of little or no steering activity followed by sudden or excessive inputs. The Driver Condition Monitoring system is designed to recognize these patterns, and, by also checking the usage of the brake and accelerator pedals, the direction indicators and various buttons on the instrument panel, will show a multi-stage warning in the instrument cluster and give audible warnings to prompt the driver to take a break.2
The Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system available on the F-PACE uses the stereo camera to keep the driver informed of the speed limit – including temporary limits which apply in road construction sites, for example, variable limits on highways, or reduced limits when towing.2 The limit is displayed in the instrument cluster and if fitted to the vehicle, in the head-up display, and camera data is always cross-referenced against GPS data for maximum accuracy. If the driver selects the over-speed warning function, the ring around the sign graphic flashes whenever the limit is exceeded, giving an unobtrusive prompt to slow down.
Further support for the driver comes from the Intelligent Speed Limiter (ISL). This system can use TSR data to adjust the set point and can automatically increase or decrease the vehicle’s maximum speed while the accelerator pedal is pressed. If the TSR system recognizes a higher speed limit ahead, the ISL system is designed to notify the driver and the vehicle can accelerate smoothly up to the new limit. If the speed limit is lower, the vehicle can be slowed down accordingly.2
Laser head-up display
The laser head-up display (HUD) available on the F-PACE can put information such as vehicle speed, turn-by-turn navigation instructions and speed limits right in the driver’s eye line, minimizing the amount of time spent glancing down at the instrument cluster.2 The color images are exceptionally sharp and are adjustable both in height and in brightness; the HUD can also be switched off if desired.
Laser technology offers several advantages over conventional TFT systems including excellent color saturation and higher contrast, so they remain clear even in bright sunlight.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist
As well as reducing driver workload when cruising on the highway, the Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC), when equipped on the F-PACE, can also help to relieve the monotony of driving in heavy traffic, thanks to the queue-assist function. The long-range radar will maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, all the way down to a standstill.2 Press the accelerator again, and the F-PACE will pull away again and track the vehicle in front, at a distance, all the way up to the chosen speed setting.
Blind Spot Monitor and Reverse Traffic Detection
By monitoring the area behind the vehicle, optional radar can assist the driver in other scenarios too. Medium-range sensors warn the driver of other vehicles approaching fast from behind. As they approach the blind spot, a flashing icon appears in the side mirror to alert the driver of the potential danger. As the vehicle enters the blind spot, the icon becomes solid.2
The same medium-radar sensors can help the driver at lower speeds too. When reversing out of parking spaces, other vehicles approaching from either side – which may not be visible to the driver – are detected by the radar. If they present a potential hazard, the driver is given audible and visual warnings.
Park Assist
To assist the driver with parking in small spaces, the F-PACE is available with semi-automated park assist functions for parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers. The vehicle’s ultrasonic sensors first measure the space, and, if the system decides that it’s suitable, will enable the vehicle to steer itself in – the driver just has to control the accelerator and the brakes.2 The system can also steer the vehicle out of parallel spaces.
INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
The F-PACE is equipped with the Jaguar InControl® Touch™ infotainment system as standard1. Featuring an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen, intuitive user interface and crisp clear graphics, it supports smartphone and tablet gestures such as ‘swipe’ to move from one page to another, and ‘drag’ to scroll through maps.
With navigation fitted to the vehicle, entering addresses is quicker and easier than with previous systems and routes are calculated faster thanks to SD card storage of navigation data. Maps are rendered in 2D and 3D graphics, making directions simple and intuitive to follow.
Turn-by-turn instructions can also be shown in the optional head-up display, leaving the driver free to concentrate on what matters most – the road ahead.2
Also available as an option, is the Jaguar InControl® Touch Pro infotainment system.1 Designed and developed in-house around a quad-core processor, a high-speed 60GB solid-state drive (SSD) and an ultra-fast Ethernet network, InControl Touch Pro™ delivers truly world-class performance and an outstanding user experience.
The Jaguar InControl® Touch Pro infotainment system features a 10.2-inch touch-screen. Like a tablet, there are no buttons; all controls are integrated into the bottom section of the touch-screen, making interaction smooth and seamless. The home screen can be customized and widgets can be added – users can even add additional home screens if they wish.1
InControl Touch Pro has been designed to make every journey easier and more enjoyable. Navigation data stored on the high-speed SSD can be accessed in a fraction of the time required with conventional hard drive technology, making the graphics incredibly responsive. Users can zoom in and out of maps using ‘pinch’ and ‘pan’ gestures.1
Even when there’s no GPS signal the system can still help drivers to stay on track with dead-reckoning functionality which analyzes data from the vehicle’s sensors to accurately predict the vehicle’s location.
Using the data connection to access location-based features adds another dimension to the system’s capability. Search for a destination and the system will check if there’s sufficient fuel to complete the journey. If not, this will be flagged and filling stations on the route that are within range are shown on the map: tapping on one of them is all it takes to add it as a waypoint.
It’s also possible to share destination, current location and estimated time of arrival (ETA) with others via email or text message.1 If your ETA slips, the system can automatically follow-up with an update.
Commute Mode learns an owner’s daily drive so that it can offer alternative routes to avoid congestion using historical and real-time traffic information. Approach Mode adds a 360-deg interactive view of your destination alongside the map display when you’re approximately 656-ft (200m away) – it can even show you where the nearest available parking lots are and then direct you to them. A dedicated companion app for iOS® and Android™ devices enables true door-to-door route planning and guidance and can help you to complete your journey on public transport or on foot.
InControl Touch Pro™ is offered in conjunction with a Meridian® 17-speaker, 825W surround sound system which delivers ideal sound reproduction with benchmark low levels of distortion.
The experience is enriched with Gracenote images stored on the SSD drive –– and functions such as ‘Play more like this’ which automatically compiles playlists, or Music Queue, which makes it easy to search for and add songs, albums or artists to a music queue the current track is still playing.
The modules within InControl Touch Pro are connected using ultra-fast Ethernet. This advanced network technology is more than five times faster than competing conventionally wired technologies. Jaguar is one of the very first vehicle manufacturers to use it.
Ethernet’s main advantage is its incredible bandwidth: up to 1Gb/second. The potential to carry such massive amounts of data, together with the performance of the quad-core processor and the solid-state drive means that InControl Touch Pro will be able to offer even greater functionality in the future.
The all-new F-PACE also brings the world debut of Jaguar’s Activity Key. A waterproof, shockproof wristband with an integrated transponder, this wearable technology supports active lifestyles because it allows the keyfob to be securely locked inside the vehicle – invaluable, for example, if you’re going surfing or kayaking.
Locking the all-new F-PACE using the Activity Key will disable any keyfobs left inside the SUV. Activity Key works on the same RF frequencies as the other keys and is used to lock and unlock the vehicle by holding it in close proximity to the J of the Jaguar lettering on the tailgate. Activity Key has no battery, so owners never have to worry about changing it.
InControl suite of technologies
Jaguar InControl® Apps™ enables drivers to access apps on Android™ and Apple® smartphones using the InControl Touch™ and InControl Touch Pro™ infotainment systems.1 After connecting the device using a USB cable and the dedicated port in the center console, compatible apps will be shown on the vehicle touch-screen. Optimized for in-vehicle use to reduce driver distraction, the range of approved third-party apps is growing constantly.
The F-PACE can be equipped to also function as a Wi-Fi hotspot, hosting up to eight devices simultaneously.8 With a paid data plan, the integrated SIM card and the vehicle’s antenna are used to provide a stable, reliable signal.
Jaguar InControl® Remote™ functionality allows users of iOS® and Android™ smartphones to connect to the car remotely to control car functions, including deactivating the alarm, locking or unlocking the doors, and remote heating or cooling the cabin through engine start.

Bentley Bentayga: The Fastest, Most Powerful, Most Luxurious And Most Exclusive Suv In The World

Crewe, Bentley Motors is today announcing full details of its pinnacle, sector-defining new model, the Bentayga.
The Bentley Bentayga combines unparalleled luxury with effortless performance and everyday usability.
With an all-new W12 powertrain, the Bentayga is the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world. It offers a true Bentley driving experience and showcases innovative technology features.
Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Crewe, the Bentayga’s styling is pure Bentley. Sculptural with an elegant, timeless execution, it perfectly balances athleticism with confidence. From the four round LED headlamps and large matrix grille, to the distinctive power line and muscular haunches, the Bentley DNA is apparent throughout.
The Bentley Bentayga boasts the world’s finest automotive cabin, with unrivalled levels of precision. The detailing in metal, wood and leather – including meticulous tolerances between elements of trim – is the epitome of modern British luxury. This level of perfection is only achievable thanks to the exceptional craft and skill of Bentley’s colleagues in Crewe.
An all-new twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine is at the heart of the new Bentayga. The mighty 12-cylinder unit combines efficiency and refinement with ultra-luxurious levels of power and torque. With 608 PS (600 bhp / 447kW) and 900 Nm (663 lb. ft) delivering a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds) and a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h), the Bentayga is the world’s most powerful and fastest SUV.
Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, comments: “The Bentayga is truly the Bentley of SUVs. It redefines luxury in the SUV sector and offers a genuine Bentley experience in any environment, thanks to a combination of unparalleled attention to detail, go-anywhere ability and cutting-edge technology. With this extraordinary car we are looking forward to an exciting period of strong growth and sales success for Bentley. The Bentayga is the next step in our brand’s bold future.”
The Bentayga will make its full public debut at the IAA Frankfurt Show from 15 to 27 September. Customer deliveries commence in early 2016.
Innovative Features and Advanced Technologies
A suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and infotainment features designed to enhance safety, comfort and convenience make the Bentayga an innovative, advanced and connected luxury SUV.
It offers the widest range of on- and off-road drive settings of any vehicle via Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Mode and optional Responsive Off-Road Setting. Up to eight modes are available, allowing drivers, at the simple turn of a dial, to select the perfect dynamic set-up for any surface or road condition. This versatility is complemented by Bentley Dynamic Ride (electrically activated 48V active roll control) and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS).
Responsive Off-Road Setting allows the customer to select the appropriate vehicle settings for a wide range of off-road surfaces, while the Driver Information Panel displays information on pitch, roll, wheel articulation, steering angle, compass bearing and altitude.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) including Stop & Go, Predictive ACC and Traffic Assist enables the driver to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front. Predictive ACC uses the navigation data, sensors and cameras to predict upcoming corners, city boundaries and speed-limit changes and can then modify the vehicle speed accordingly, improving both comfort and fuel economy.
In urban environments, there are a number of driver aids available on the Bentayga. These systems – such as Traffic Sign Recognition, which detects a wide variety of traffic signs and displays information to the driver; Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, which uses radar technology to detect crossing traffic when reversing out of a parking space; and Top View, a system which uses four cameras to display an overall picture of the vehicle’s surroundings – combine to enhance everyday usability.
The Bentayga is also available with Park Assist – a system that detects suitable parking spaces (both parallel and perpendicular) before autonomous steering takes over to support parking manoeuvres, even in narrow and tricky spaces.
Other innovative systems available on the Bentayga include Electronic Night Vision, which uses infra-red technology to identify potential obstacles ahead, and a Head-Up Display, which reduces driver distraction and increases safety.
The Bentayga’s all-new, cutting-edge 8” touch screen infotainment system boasts class-leading navigation technology, a 60GB hard drive, and a choice of up to 30 languages.
Rear seat passengers benefit from the introduction of the Bentley Entertainment Tablet – a removable 10.2” Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for effortless, high-speed on-board connectivity.
Customers can choose between three different sound systems for the Bentayga: Bentley Standard Audio, Bentley Signature Audio and Naim for Bentley Premium Audio. The latter is the most powerful system in the segment, with 1,950 watts, a network of 18 speakers and super-tweeters for unrivalled recreation of the highest audio frequencies.
Sculptural Form, Sharp Lines and Elegant Execution
The Bentayga’s wheel arches, fenders and bonnet deliver a balance between sportiness and SUV presence. The ultra-sharp Bentley power line and muscular rear haunch display a taut tension in side profile, as part of the largest single-piece aluminium pressing in the automotive world. Trademark Bentley features such as the large matrix grille and B-shaped wing vents afford the Bentayga a modern, dynamic elegance.
The grille is flanked by four distinctive floating all-LED headlamps. The lights sit flush within the seamless superformed aluminium front fenders. Innovative design features, like the discreet headlamp washers contained within the outer lamp’s body-coloured centre, demonstrate remarkable attention to detail.
To emphasise the go-anywhere nature of the Bentayga, the Bentley design team have integrated a stylish skid plate into the lower section of the front bumper, just below the floating wing motif.
At the rear, within the segmented tail lights, a new ‘B’-shaped illumination graphic is incorporated that affords the Bentayga an instantly recognisable and striking night-time signature.
A combination of advanced design, innovative engineering and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies – including the use of lightweight aluminium – has enabled a total weight saving of 236kg compared to a traditional body construction.
As standard, the Bentayga comes with a panoramic glass roof. Making up almost 60 per cent of the total roof surface, the 1.35m2 glass feature is split into two panes. The front panel tilts and slides, and the whole glass surface can be obscured via an electric, full-length roller blind.
Either side of the glass roof are aluminium roof rails that combine two different finishes – a high-gloss black base and bright anodised top section.
A new range of bespoke Bentayga alloy wheels are available, ranging in size from 20” to 22”.
The World’s Finest Cabin, Handcrafted at the Home of Bentley
Step inside the new Bentayga and you find the finest automotive interior in the world, with handcrafted wood and leather throughout – engineered with precision to deliver absolute perfection.
The attention to detail in metal, wood and leather is the epitome of modern British luxury, and is only achievable thanks to the exceptional skill of the workforce in Crewe.
The Bentayga’s cockpit sets new standards for both luxury and precision, with meticulous tolerances between the exquisite veneered woods and metal elements. The dashboard takes the iconic Bentley ‘wing’ design as its inspiration, with the beautifully finished surfaces flowing gracefully from door to door over the top of the instrument binnacles, down under the centre console and back up around the passenger side fascia and foot well.
The hand-selected veneers form pure and elegant surfaces throughout the cabin, and each of the 15 pieces are shaped by Bentley’s artisans from a choice of seven different veneers, and finished with trademark Bentley attention to detail.
Highly polished, handcrafted metal elements adorn the dashboard, centre console and doors. Trademark Bentley knurling on the drive mode selector, gear knob, iconic bulls-eye vents and organ pulls adds sophistication and tactile refinement.
Sumptuous front seats, individually handcrafted in Crewe and featuring 22-way adjustment including adjustable cushion and backrest bolsters, provide superb support and comfort for all conditions. This cosseted feeling is further enhanced with a six-programme massage system, seat heating and ventilation.
Whether selected in four- or five-seat configuration, all of the leather seats in the Bentayga are available with contrast stitching and a quilted diamond design applied to the ‘shoulders’ and bolsters, echoing the design of a finely tailored British hunting jacket.
Bentley specialists individually select only the finest bull hides, all of which are sourced from cool European climates, naturally tanned and never over-printed.. Customers have the choice of 15 colours, in three duo-tone and one single mono-tone colour split.
The four-seat configuration makes the ultimate statement in design, comfort and luxury. The two individual rear seats adjust in 18 different ways and include massage and ventilation functions as well as footrests. The veneered rear console hides additional functionality such as cup holders, generous storage areas and USB charging sockets.
The opulent feeling is completed by the fixed back, dividing the interior cabin from the boot. Also trimmed in the signature diamond quilting and including a ski-hatch, it creates an enclosed rear cabin space that sets new standards in the SUV sector.
A full-length panoramic sunroof with acoustic interlays allows ample natural sunlight to highlight the surfaces and detailing.
Activate the hands-free tailgate and not only is a large, practical storage space revealed, but also another of the Bentayga’s unique features – the optional folding event seat. Ideal for those wishing to stop for a moment and enjoy a spectacular outdoor environment or pursuit, the innovative leather-trimmed folding seat matches exactly the style of the cabin seats and integrates seamlessly into the rear of the car with characteristic attention to detail.
All-New W12 – Efficiency with Unrivalled Power and Torque
At the heart of the Bentayga is the all-new Crewe-built W12 TSI engine. This 6.0-litre twin-turbo unit combines efficiency and refinement with the luxury of unrivalled power and torque.
It is the most technologically advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world and develops 600 bhp (608 PS / 447 kW) @ 6,000 rpm and 900 Nm (663 lb ft) from 1,250 rpm to 4,500 rpm. These mighty outputs result in equally impressive performance figures. The Bentayga is capable of dispatching the sprint to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds) on its way to a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h).
The new W12 uses both direct and indirect fuel injection. Switching seamlessly between the two technologies, the combination of these systems maximises refinement, delivers low particulate emissions and maximises power and torque delivery.
An impressive efficiency figure of 292 g/km CO2 is made possible in part thanks to Bentley’s Variable Displacement system, which shuts down half of the engine under defined conditions. Intake and exhaust valves, fuel injection and ignition are all shut down on defined cylinders, with the engine running as a six-cylinder for improved efficiency.
The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The transmission and four-wheel-drive system has been strengthened to handle the demands and high torque levels of off-road driving.
In Bentley’s advanced application of Start-Stop technology for the Bentayga, coasting is also available, as the engine rests not only when the vehicle is stationary but also at ‘near to stop’ speeds.
In 5th to 8th gear, when the driver releases the throttle (at motorway cruising speed, for example) the car will open the torque converter, dropping the engine to idle and simply allowing the car to roll or ‘sail’. When the throttle is reapplied, or the car starts going downhill and detects an increase in speed, the transmission is re-engaged.
The new W12 sees a 11.9% efficiency improvement compared to the existing powertrain. The Bentayga will also be available as diesel and hybrid variants in the future.
Genuine Luxury with Go-Anywhere Ability
Never before has a vehicle so coherently combined genuine luxury with go-anywhere driving ability.
The development programme for the Bentayga has been the most exhaustive in the Bentley brand’s history, ranging across five continents. From the dirt and gravel of South Africa and the dunes of Dubai, to the muddy fields of Cheshire, and from -30°C in the frozen North Cape to searing 50°C desert heat, the Bentayga’s ability to perform on any surface and even in the most extreme conditions has been proven.
The Bentayga has also driven more than 400 laps of the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, as part of developing the dynamic performance of the chassis and fine-tuning the relevant control and stability systems. The unique features of the Nordschleife, including the high level of topographical change, variety of surface grip levels and wide range of cornering speeds, made it the perfect place to develop the fastest, most powerful SUV in the world.
The Bentayga introduces Bentley Dynamic Ride – the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises an unrivalled 48V system. Inherent in larger vehicles with a higher centre of gravity, this system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.
While conventional anti-roll bars present a compromise between body control and ride comfort, Bentley’s adaptive and reactive system provides variable torsional resistance, allowing the Bentayga to be both dynamically capable and comfortable for all occupants at all times. The pioneering use of a 48V system results in silent, instantaneous responses and sufficient power on hand to deal with all road surfaces.
Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) is also featured on the Bentayga. The new system improves feedback to the driver, while providing isolation from steering kick-back both on- and off-road. EPAS also features a variable rack ratio, permitting light and fast steering while manoeuvring at low speeds, as well as a more subdued response for excellent stability at high speeds.
The Bentayga offers class-leading ride comfort, steering feel and handling thanks to the partnership of a highly sophisticated chassis and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In addition to advanced, multi-mode Traction Control (TCS), the Bentayga also features Hill Descent Control (HDC).
HDC automatically regulates the vehicle’s speed on steep declines, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering and obstacles ahead. It can be pre-set at speeds between two and 30 km/h (going in either direction) and works on gradients greater than five per cent.
As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga comes with multi-mode air suspension. The Bentayga driver has four different modes to choose from: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low. High 2, for example, can be manually selected when tackling more severe off-road surfaces. Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.
Bentley Personalisation Options and Mulliner Bespoke
The Bentayga redefines personalisation and bespoke luxury. Paint, leather, veneer and lifestyle options are unlimited and tailored to the individual.
The standard palette alone comprises 17 exterior paint colours, with up to 90 hues available in the extended range. There are also 15 luxurious carpet options, seven different handcrafted veneers and 15 choices of interior trim hide, which means that customers are able to specify their own choice of luxury finish. In addition, customers can choose between a new range of bespoke Bentayga alloy wheels, ranging in size from 20” to 22”.
Six lifestyle-orientated specification packages will be available from launch, including two styling packs. In addition to these options, the Bentayga is available with the widest range of lifestyle accessories ever offered by the Bentley brand. For example, customers with an interest in watersports may wish to specify the Load-Assist Tray and Wet Gear Stowage options.
As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga can also be handed over to the highly skilled and dedicated craftspeople at Mulliner, who will respond to bespoke customer requirements.
At launch, the Bentayga is available with an exquisite integrated Mulliner Hamper Set, complete with cooler, bespoke fine Linley china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass, and storage area for dry goods. For comfort in the great outdoors, sections of the hamper can be removed and used as seats.
A bespoke mechanical Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling clock can also be specified. The most complex of watch mechanisms, the Mulliner Tourbillon is automatically wound periodically by a dedicated high-precision winding mechanism within the car. This masterpiece is machined in solid gold (customers can select from either rose or white gold), with a choice of either a mother-of-pearl or black ebony face and decorated with eight diamond indexes.

GM Invests $877 Million for Flint Assembly Upgrades – New Body Facility Links Assembly Plant with Flint Metal Center
FLINT, Mich. – General Motors’ oldest assembly plant in North America, a popular destination for pickup truck customers who want to watch their vehicles being built, will undergo transformation in the coming years.
GM officials today announced plans to invest $877 million to build a new body shop for the assembly plant, locating it closer to the Flint Metal Center, which supplies sheet metal and other parts used in the Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickups produced in the assembly plant.
The investment will also cover improvements to the general assembly area inside Flint Assembly, as well as retooling and the installation of new equipment at the plant.
“This investment will allow us to use a more innovative approach to deliver material between two critical facilities, reducing handling and the time it takes to ship parts,” said Cathy Clegg, GM North America Manufacturing and Labor Relations vice president.
Since 2011, GM has announced investments topping $1.8 billion for Flint Assembly. This includes $600 million for plant upgrades and a new standalone paint shop that is under construction and slated to open in 2016. Work on the 883,000-square-foot body shop is expected to begin in the first half of 2016, with completion slated for 2018.
“In the last several years, GM’s investments in the city of Flint have topped $2.5 billion, creating hundreds of construction jobs and an economic boost for the community,” said Flint Mayor Dayne Walling. “This investment not only strengthens the ties between GM and the city, it demonstrates that Flint continues to play an important role in the resurgence of manufacturing in Michigan and the rest of the United States.”
Opened in 1947 as part of a post-World War II building boom by GM’s Flint Assembly has produced more than 13 million vehicles. The plant’s “View Builds,” as they are called, allow customers to see their heavy-duty Silverados or heavy-duty Sierra trucks being assembled and roll off the line after a series of quality checks by members of UAW Local 598.
“While the plant has received numerous awards for initial quality and long-term durability and reliability, our latest investments in the plant will raise the bar in vehicle quality and customer satisfaction,” Clegg said.
For starters, when the new paint shop opens in 2016, trucks will be painted using a wet-coat process that results in a smoother, more durable finish. The new body shop will be constructed north of the Flint Metal Center, reducing transportation time and handling between facilities.
“This announcement is due to the hard work and dedication of our UAW members in Flint,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada, who leads the UAW GM Department. “This proves once again that when we work together in a collaborative approach, UAW members continue to come up with innovative ways to grow the business, which provides jobs and improves the quality of the products we produce. This is both good for the Company and good for our members.”
Today’s announcement completes the $5.4 billion in investments GM and the UAW announced at the end of April. Since June 2009, GM has announced U.S. facility investments of approximately $17.8 billion, including $12.4 billion since the end of the 2011 UAW-GM National Agreement. These investments have created approximately 6,250 new jobs and secured 20,700 other positions.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands. Tommy Johnson Jr. and 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Races to NHRA Northwest Nationals Win
August 10, 2015 , Kent, Washington – Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) and the new 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T closed out the National Hot Rod Association’s three-consecutive events “Western Swing” at the 28th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals with a title win by Tommy Johnson Jr., his second of the year aboard his Make-A-Wish Mopar machine. With the victory, the new Funny Car body made its 13th appearance in the winner’s circle this year after advancing to a 15th final elimination in 16 national events this season.
“On behalf of everyone at Mopar, congratulations to Tommy Johnson Jr. for his second win of the year with his title victory at the Northwest Nationals,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO — Mopar Brand Service, Parts and Customer Care, FCA. “To see DSR win all three Funny Car nationals event titles on the Western Swing and add another coveted win to the resume of the new 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car is a tribute to the team’s hard work and Mopar’s dedication to providing quality products that translate to success on the track for our drivers.”
Seeded fifth, Johnson Jr. defeated fellow Dodge driver Paul Lee and then Chad Head before a semi-final battle against teammate Jack Beckman in a rematch of the final elimination round of last weekend’s NHRA Sonoma Nationals. This time Johnson emerged the victor to advance to final round showdown against Del Worsham.
With a .040-second reaction time, the Make-A-Wish Mopar posted a 4.073 seconds elapsed time pass at 308.00 mph to score a holeshot victory over his competitor’s 4.042/307.51 to earn his second win of the season and 10th career Funny Car Wally. The win puts Johnson third in the standings, 114 points behind points leader Matt Hagan and Beckman to put the DSR teammates 1-2-3 in championship hunt with two events left before NHRA’s “Countdown to the Championship” playoff series begins.
“We’ve got the most consistent car,” said Johnson Jr of his HEMI®-powered 2015 Dodge Charger R/T. “The last seven races including this one, we have been to four finals. We’ve got a good team. We had struggles early in the season, but now we’ve overcome them and we have a good car that can win races. Everybody stepped up to the plate. I’m so happy for the guys. Our Make-A-Wish Dodge is so competitive right now, and this class is so competitive. I’m glad we’re peaking at the right time. We’ll go into the Countdown to the Championship with a lot of confidence.”
After national title wins in Denver and Sonoma, DSR teammate Beckman’s attempted bid to sweep the Western Swing came to an end against Johnson Jr.in the semi-finals. In the span of those three consecutive events, Beckman also earned two No.1 qualifier positions and made history twice in his 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car by setting and then resetting the national elapsed-time record with an unbelievable 3.912-second run, paired with a Pacific Raceways track-record speed of 322.88 mph. The 2012 NHRA champ earned 189 points during the swing to close the gap between his second place position and that of points leader Hagan.
“If you would’ve told me three weeks ago that we would make the two quickest runs in Funny Car history, back up the national record, win two races and close within five points Hagan and (crew chief Dickie) Venables, I would say sign me up for that,” Beckman said. “That being said, it’s disappointing to get that far into the Western Swing, have a chance to sweep and not get it done. I think that we’ve done some amazing things to our Infinite Hero tune-up to put our car in position to be the frontrunner.”
While DSR’s Ron Capps won his all-Mopar first round match-up against stablemate Hagan, his day was cut short by Beckman in the quarterfinals to find himself sixth in points.
The Western Swing was not kind to defending Funny Car champion Hagan. The Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T had its race day shortened against each of Hagan’s DSR teammates during the three week stint, losing to Capps in the first round at Seattle, Johnson Jr. in the second round at Sonoma, and Beckman in the second round at Denver.
“It’s been a tricky Western Swing for this Mopar/Rocky Boots team,” said Hagan who despite the setbacks remains in the Funny Car leader by five points. “It certainly wasn’t the results we were hoping for these last three races. We know what works. We’ve had a lot of success and we’ll have more. We lost some momentum and some ground in the points, but we’ll dig our way back. This thing is very cyclical out here and we’ll win more races this season.”
Seeded sixth for Pro Stock eliminations, Allen Johnson exacted a little bit of revenge in his “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar” Dodge Dart by sending Larry Morgan home early in the first round after losing a dramatic final to his competitor at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals two weeks ago. Johnson continued his drive past Jonathan Gray in quarterfinals to meet up with former teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr. who is competing part-time this season.
Johnson had a 0.031 reaction time to start the semi-final battle, but was hampered by a sudden move out of the groove on his pass to post a 6.572/211.26 loss to Coughlin’s (0.015) 6.521/212.33. Coughlin later fell to Chris McGaha who earned the national title win to post back-to-back victories after his win at Sonoma last weekend. Johnson remains fifth in the Pro Stock standings.
The next stop on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule is the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway, scheduled for Aug 20-23.

Fiat Chrysler to Pay Largest Ever Vehicle Violations of $105 million for Mishandling Recalls
WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced today that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has acknowledged violations of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act’s requirements to repair vehicles with safety defects and will submit to rigorous federal oversight, buy back some defective vehicles from owners, and agreed to a $105 million civil penalty, the largest ever imposed by the Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The enforcement action comes after a July 2 public hearing at which NHTSA officials outlined problems with Fiat Chrysler’s execution of 23 vehicle safety recalls covering more than 11 million defective vehicles. Fiat Chrysler has since admitted to violating the Safety Act in three areas: effective and timely recall remedies, notification to vehicle owners and dealers and notifications to NHTSA.
“Today’s action holds Fiat Chrysler accountable for its past failures, pushes them to get unsafe vehicles repaired or off the roads and takes concrete steps to keep Americans safer going forward,” said Secretary Foxx. “This civil penalty puts manufacturers on notice that the Department will act when they do not take their obligations to repair safety defects seriously.”
In a consent order issued by NHTSA, Fiat Chrysler commits to take action to get defective vehicles off the roads or repaired. Owners of more than half a million vehicles with defective suspension parts that could cause the vehicle to lose control will have the opportunity to sell their vehicle back to Fiat Chrysler. Owners of more than a million Jeeps that are prone to deadly fires either will have the chance to trade their vehicle in for above its market value, or will receive a financial incentive to get their vehicle remedied.
The consent order requires FCA to notify vehicle owners eligible for buybacks and other financial incentives that these new options are available.
The automaker also agrees to unprecedented oversight for the next three years, which includes hiring an independent monitor approved by NHTSA to assess, track and report the company’s recall performance.
“Fiat Chrysler’s pattern of poor performance put millions of its customers, and the driving public, at risk,” NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said. “This action will provide relief to owners of defective vehicles, will help improve recall performance throughout the auto industry, and gives Fiat Chrysler the opportunity to embrace a proactive safety culture.”
The company must pay a $70 million cash penalty – equal to the record $70 million civil penalty the agency imposed on Honda in January. In addition, Fiat Chrysler must spend at least $20 million on meeting performance requirements included in the Consent Order. Another $15 million could come due if the independent monitor discovers additional violations of the Safety Act or the Consent Order.
Ford Developing Advanced Headlights That Point Out People, Animals In The Dark, And Widen Beams At Tricky Junctions
AACHEN, Germany, – Driving at night, particularly on unlit roads, can be a nerve-wracking experience. Ford is developing new lighting technologies that will enable drivers to more easily identify potential hazards, including pedestrians, cyclists and animals.
Ford’s Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System can widen the beam at junctions and roundabouts to better illuminate hazards that are not in the direction of travel. New Spot Lighting technology helps draw the driver’s attention to pedestrians, cyclists and even large animals in the vehicle’s path or even just off the road.
“Many people who drive at night have had to quickly react to someone or something suddenly appearing in the road – as if from nowhere. Ford’s Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System and Spot Lighting help ensure the driver is quickly alerted to people or animals that could present a danger,” said Ken Washington, vice president, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering.
Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System builds upon Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting System and Traffic Sign Recognition, which are already available in Ford vehicles, to provide drivers with improved visibility at roundabouts, stop, and give way or yield signs.
The system also uses GPS information to better illuminate bends and dips on a chosen route. Where GPS information is not available the technology uses a forward-facing video camera mounted in the rear-view mirror base to detect lane markings and predict the road’s curvature, using the information to illuminate the area more effectively.
In a further evolutionary step, in those instances, the camera stores the information in the navigation system. When next the driver uses the same road again, the headlights adapt to the course of the road automatically to better light the way.
Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System was developed at Ford’s European Research and Innovation Centre in Aachen, Germany, and Ford expects the technology to be available for customers in the near term.
Spot Lighting – currently in the pre-development phase with Ford engineers in Aachen – uses an infra-red camera in the front grille to simultaneously locate and track up to eight people and bigger animals, including larger dogs, at a range of up to 120 metres.
The system can spotlight two hazards for the driver with a spot and a stripe on the road surface, illuminated by two special LED lamps next to the fog lights. The highlighted objects are displayed on the screen inside the car, marked in a red or yellow frame, according to the proximity of the object and the level of danger presented.
“Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting can help make it easier for the driver to travel at night in unfamiliar surroundings, and to more easily see unexpected hazards. At roundabouts, for example, our system helps the driver to clearly see the exits – and check if cyclists and pedestrians are crossing the road,” said Michael Koherr, research engineer, Lighting Systems, Ford of Europe. “Spot Lighting makes potential hazards in the road ahead more easily visible to the driver – whether that is a pedestrian, a cyclist, or even a large animal.”
Road safety reports show that on unlit roads there is a significantly increased likelihood of accidents, and that such accidents could involve personal injuries, or fatalities.* Ford is a leading innovator in lighting technology. Systems currently available on Ford vehicles include:
Dynamic LED Headlights which combines full-LED headlamps offering daylight-mimicking light clarity with Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting System. The system adjusts the headlight beam angle and intensity to match the driving environment. It can choose one of seven settings according to vehicle speed, ambient light conditions, steering angle, distance to the vehicle in front and windscreen wiper activation
Glare-Free Highbeam technology for the adaptive LED headlamps. The system detects vehicles ahead and fades out light that could dazzle oncoming drivers, while retaining maximum illumination for other areas
Auto High Beam Control detects oncoming vehicles and automatically switches to dipped beam, before switching back to high beam once it detects the vehicle has passed

Toyota Financial Services (TFS) Expands Auto Industry’s Only Asset-Backed Green Bond Program
TORRANCE, Calif., – Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to supporting the sale of green vehicles, Toyota Financial Services (TFS) issued the auto industry’s second-ever Asset-Backed Green Bond in the amount of $1.25 billion. TFS revolutionized the Green Bond market by introducing the auto industry’s first-ever Asset-Backed Green Bond in 2014. Green Bonds are an important component of TFS’ broad-ranging funding program and serve to enhance Toyota’s already extensive green commitment.
Proceeds of the TFS Green Bond will be used to fund new retail finance contracts and lease contracts for Toyota and Lexus vehicles that meet specific criteria, including powertrain, fuel efficiency and emissions. There are currently eight vehicles in the Toyota and Lexus portfolio of green vehicles that qualify.
“Investors enthusiastically welcomed the continuation of the auto industry’s sole Green Bond program from Toyota Financial Services,” said Mike Groff, TFS CEO. “The Green Bond itself represents the innovation that TFS brings to the financial marketplace and reflects Toyota’s commitment to environmentally friendly transportation. Its proceeds will enable us to continue to provide Toyota and Lexus customers with attractive financing options for their vehicles.”
To develop the Green Bond, TFS worked closely with Citi, which has a long-standing relationship with TFS and shares its commitment to green innovation. Citi served as the structuring lead manager of the bond, and BofA Merrill Lynch and Credit Agricole acted as joint-lead managers.
The TFS Green Bond program is unique in the auto industry and enhances Toyota’s leadership reputation for green innovation. Toyota currently offers hybrid editions in nearly all of its vehicle categories. Since the launch of the first Prius in 1997, Toyota has sold over 2.4 million hybrid vehicles in North America.
“Citi is proud to support Toyota Financial Services and this innovative transaction,” said Tyler Dickson, Global Head of Capital Markets Origination at Citi. “With growing investor demand for environmentally friendly, energy efficient assets such as the TFS Green Bond, we see a significant opportunity for Toyota to continue its leadership in clean transportation investments.”
TFS will commit to use the proceeds of the Green Bond toward the purchase of retail finance contracts and lease contracts for Toyota and Lexus vehicles that meet high green standards as established by three criteria:
Gas-electric hybrid or alternative fuel powertrain
Minimum EPA estimated MPG (or MPG equivalent for alternative fuel vehicles) of 35 city / 35 highway
California Low-Emission Vehicle II (LEV II) certification of super ultra-low emission vehicles (SULEVs) or higher, which would include partial zero emissions vehicles (PZEVs) and zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs)
Qualifying models from Toyota include: Prius, Prius c, Prius v, Prius Plug-in, Camry Hybrid, and Avalon Hybrid. From Lexus, qualifying vehicles are CT 200h and ES 300h.

FTC Proposes Gramm-Leach-Bliley Rule Amendment to Allow Online Privacy Notices From Auto Dealers That Finance Purchases
The Federal Trade Commission has proposed an amendment to its rules under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act to allow auto dealers that finance car purchases or provide car leases to provide online updates to consumers about their privacy policies as opposed to sending yearly updates by mail.
Under the proposed revision, auto dealers would be able to provide consumers with the privacy policy solely online, as long as the company notifies consumers on a yearly basis that the policy is viewable online. The rule change would require this notification to be part of some other legally required document provided to consumers.
The revised rule still would require dealers to provide consumers with a written copy of the notice upon request. In addition, if a dealer’s privacy policy has changed since a consumer was last provided a written notice, the consumer must be provided a copy of the new policy in writing. Dealers who share consumers’ personal data with third parties in a way that requires a consumer to have the ability to opt-out would not be allowed to provide their privacy policy only online.
The amendments also include clarifications to the language of the rule to reflect the Commission’s authority under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
The FTC will publish a full description of the changes in the Federal Register shortly. The proposed changes will be subject to public comment for 60 days, beginning today and continuing through Aug. 31, 2015, after which the Commission will decide whether to make the proposed changes final. Interested parties can submit comments electronically.
The Commission vote to publish the proposed rule changes was 5-0.
Chevrolet Re-enters Low Cab Forward Truck Market – Six Models Broaden Choices for Fleet and Commercial Customers
DETROIT – Chevrolet announced today it will offer low cab forward medium-duty trucks in the U.S. in 2016, returning the brand to a growing segment of the commercial vehicle market and expanding choices for fleet and commercial truck customers.
The six new models – Chevrolet 3500, 3500HD, 4500, 4500HD, 5500 and 5500 HD – are based on the Isuzu N-Series, which GM will procure from Isuzu and distribute through Chevrolet dealers.
“Bringing low cab forward trucks back to our portfolio strengthens Chevrolet’s commitment to providing commercial customers with more choices and provides customers with a versatile lineup of trucks, vans and crossovers,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales. “This addition helps our dealers satisfy their commercial customers’ needs all in one place.
The new trucks will be offered in regular-cab and crew-cab body styles. A General Motors’ sourced 6.0L V-8 gas engine and six-speed automatic transmission, or Isuzu-sourced 3.0L and 5.2L turbo-diesel engines will be available, depending on the model. The gas-powered models will be assembled in the United States in Charlotte, Mich.
Along with the Isuzu-badged versions, the Chevrolet models will be the only low cab forward trucks in the North American market to offer a gas-powered powertrain. Additional features include:

General Motors Sales Beat Analyst Expectations, Buck Industry Trend
DETROIT – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers in the United States delivered 293,097 vehicles in May 2015, for General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) best May sales since 2007 and its best month since August 2008. Total sales were up 3 percent year over year and retail sales were up 7 percent in a month when most major competitors lost ground. Pickup trucks and crossovers were especially strong sellers.
“Chevrolet has the hot hand in the pickup market thanks to our three-truck strategy,” said Kurt McNeil, General Motors’ U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “Our market share is growing and our strategy is to retain these customers with the best overall ownership experience.”
The Chevrolet Silverado’s estimated retail segment share was 27 percent in May, according to J.D. Power PIN data, up 3 percentage points year over year. Calendar year to date, the truck’s retail segment share is 26 percent, up 1 percentage point.
Demand for the all-new Colorado midsize pickup is rising faster than GM’s ability to increase production, even with the addition of a third production shift in March. With 8,881 sales in May, the Colorado controls about one-quarter of the retail market for midsize pickups and it has been the industry’s fastest-selling pickup for four consecutive months. Its “days to turn” is only 13 days, according to PIN, and retail inventory is 11 days.
Demand is also soaring for Chevrolet crossovers, which had their best sales ever in May. The Equinox was up 30 percent compared to a year ago and the Traverse rose 2 percent. Retail deliveries for the Equinox and Traverse were up 15 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The all-new Trax small crossover also continues to gain momentum, with 5,707 deliveries.
Growth at GMC, which focuses exclusively on trucks and crossovers, is far outpacing the industry. The brand had its best May since 2005, up 12 percent year over year.
The GMC Sierra was up 4 percent. Terrain had its best May sales ever, with sales up 11 percent, the Acadia had its best month ever, with sales up 67 percent, and the new Canyon contributed 2,901 units. Calendar year to date, GMC sales are up 15 percent.
Additional Highlights vs. 2014 (except as noted)
Chevrolet
Chevrolet pickup sales totaled 60,483 units, up 30 percent. Silverado deliveries were up 11 percent and the Colorado had its best month since launch.
Sonic deliveries were up 3 percent, Malibu was up 11 percent and Corvette was up 6 percent, for its best May since 1986.
Chevrolet continued to have the lowest passenger car incentives in the industry on average transaction price (ATP) basis compared to other full-line manufacturers, according to PIN.
Cadillac
The SRX saw a 21-percent increase and Escalade sales were up 6 percent.
GMC
GMC pickup sales were up 19 percent, and the Sierra and Canyon have the highest ATPs in their respective segments, according to PIN.
Buick
Buick sales were up. Enclave deliveries were up 23 percent and the Encore was up 21 percent, for its 17th consecutive year-over-year sales increase.
Fleet and Commercial
Commercial deliveries were up 5 percent in May, with full-size pickups up 9 percent. Deliveries of medium crossovers and the Chevrolet Malibu more than doubled. Through May, commercial deliveries have grown year over year for 19 consecutive months and they are up 24 percent calendar year to date.
State and local government sales were up 29 percent in May, and 23 percent calendar year to date.
GM’s total sales increase in May came despite a planned 7,000-unit decline in rental deliveries. The decline reflects the discontinuation of the fleet-only Chevrolet Captiva, as well as lower production of the fleet-only Chevrolet Impala Limited and lower sales of large SUVs.
June rental deliveries are planned to be down more than 20,000 units, year over year.
GM is prioritizing retail deliveries of large SUVs due to strong demand and low inventories, which currently stand at 62 days supply.
General Motors
May ATPs were approximately $34,000, up $550 per unit year over year, according to PIN. They are up about $1,300 calendar year to date.
Incentive spending as a percentage of ATPs was 10.6 percent in May, equal to a year ago, according to PIN. Industry average spending was 10 percent of ATPs, also equal to a year ago.
GM estimates that the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles in May was 17.6 million units, above GM’s full-year outlook of 16.5 million to 17.0 million units.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. Hyndai is the First Automaker to Launch Android Auto from Google – Integration Available on Best-Selling Sonata
Fountain Valley, Calif., – Today, Hyundai becomes the first car company to launch Android Auto™ on production vehicles. Android Auto is premiering on the 2015 Sonata with Navigation at dealerships nationwide, and will later become available on other Hyundai models.
“Android Auto aligns with Hyundai’s core interior design principles of safety, intuitiveness and simplicity,” said Dave Zuchowski, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “We launched this highly anticipated feature on our best-selling Sonata, adding to our promise of value. With the launch of Android Auto, we provide more owners with the experience of cutting-edge technology.”
Android Auto not only brings a high technology experience to Hyundai owners, but also improves safety. For example, at any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010.1 Android Auto helps keep drivers’ eyes and attention on the road by integrating the advanced driving-related functions of the user’s smartphone with the familiar centralized screen, physical controls and microphone of their car. Furthermore, the smartphone’s screen becomes “locked,” so drivers are not tempted to look down and interact with their phones directly while Android Auto is in use.
Android Auto in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata
AVAILABILITY FOR EXISTING OWNERS
Owners of existing 2015 Sonata with Navigation can get the Android Auto software update free of charge at Hyundai dealers starting today. Later this summer, owners can visit www.hyundaiusa.com/myhyundai and download the Android Auto software onto a USB memory drive. Owners will need a MyHyundai account to start the Android Auto download. A MyHyundai account requires name, address and a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The Android Auto compatible Navigation system with an eight-inch touchscreen display is available on the Sonata Sport, Eco, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models.
ANDROID AUTO
Owners will need the Android 5.0 “Lollipop” operating system or later, and the Android Auto companion app on their compatible phone to integrate Android Auto into Sonata’s screen and controls. A micro USB cable is required to connect the phone to the car’s USB port. The first time an owner plugs his or her phone into their parked Sonata, the phone will prompt the download of the Android Auto companion app from the Google Play. Users of Android Auto will instantly recognize familiar Android phone applications, such as Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, phone calling and Google Play Music upon connecting their Android phone to their Hyundai vehicle. These applications can be controlled by voice, steering wheel controls and touchscreen. Android Auto also will offer many popular third-party audio apps that owners have on their phones, including iHeartRadio, Spotify, TuneIn, NPR, Stitcher, Skype, TextMe and many more. Owners can find out up-to-date information about phone compatibility at https://support.google.com/androidauto.

GM Investing $1 Billion in Warren Technical Center – Investment Expected to Create About 2,600 New Jobs
WARREN, Mich. – General Motors will invest $1 billion in its Warren Technical Center campus, creating approximately 2,600 new jobs to support future business growth at the National Historic Landmark site.
The multiyear project, which is driving new construction on the campus, significant renovations of some existing facilities and expansion of some operations, begins this month with work continuing through 2018.
“This is an investment in our people, our products, and, ultimately, our customers, to make the Tech Center a more advanced, more efficient and more collaborative workplace,” said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development and Purchasing and Supply Chain. “Developing a new vehicle is a total team effort, and every facet of this project will make us a stronger team.”
Under current plans, the investment will create approximately 2,600 new GM salaried jobs in core areas like product engineering, IT and design, all areas critical to support future business growth. GM’s Warren Technical Center is currently home to more than 19,000 employees.
Investment highlights include:
Construction of new Design studios
Construction of a parking deck for Design employees
Rebuilding and renovating some existing R&D facilities
Construction of a multi-story IT building adjacent to the current Michigan IT Innovation Center and a new parking deck for Innovation Center employees
Construction to accommodate additional testing areas at the Advanced Energy Center
Extensive office upgrades including new carpet, paint, furniture, reconfiguration of miscellaneous work areas in most Tech Center buildings, improving the work environment for all campus functions, including the Vehicle Engineering Center or VEC.
In addition, GM previously announced $139.5 million for body shop and stamping facility upgrades at its Warren Pre-Production Operations, part of a $5.4 billion investment in U.S. plants announced April 30.
“This is great news for Warren, the region and our state – it soundly demonstrates GM’s commitment to Michigan and our talented workforce, providing key jobs and career opportunities for today and tomorrow,” said Gov. Rick Snyder. “This is why we’ve focused so hard on creating the competitive economic climate for this kind of investment in our state that will keep our comeback going strong, making Michigan the place to live, work, do business, and play.”
Said Warren Mayor Jim Fouts: “I am very excited about the investment in the GM Tech Center in Warren, which means more jobs and new revenue for police and fire services. This growth has already resulted in proposals for new investments in our downtown, which is directly across the street from the Tech Center.”
Initial construction on the 326-acre Tech Center began in 1949, and it opened in 1956. The campus was designed by world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen and landscape architect Thomas Church. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 2014 by the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. Fourteen years earlier, in 2000, the campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1986, the American Institute of Architects honored the Tech Center as the most outstanding architectural project of its era.

Double-digit Crossover and Truck Gains Drive Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac Sales
DETROIT – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers in the United States delivered 269,056 vehicles in April 2015, up 6 percent year over year. Retail deliveries were up 5 percent, fleet deliveries were up 8 percent and commercial sales were the highest since March 2008.
“At GM, truck and crossover sales have been strong all year, thanks to our increasingly deep and broad product portfolio,” said Kurt McNeil, General Motors’ U.S. vice president of Sales Operations.
GM’s trucks and crossovers posted double-digit sales increases in April, up 13 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Thanks to new products, GM’s estimated share of the retail market for midsize pickups is now 31 percent calendar year to date, according to J.D. Power PIN. For small crossovers, it is 55 percent and for large SUVs it is 74 percent.
“Consumer and commercial customer demand for pickups and utility vehicles has been building since last fall, and that’s a clear sign that the slowdown in GDP growth during the winter months was caused by factors that are mostly transitory in nature,” McNeil said. “The auto industry continues to be on track to have its best sales year since 2006.”
Highlights vs. 2014 (except as noted)
Chevrolet
Chevrolet crossover deliveries were up 51 percent (excluding the fleet-only Captiva, which has been discontinued). Equinox was up 42 percent for its best April ever. Traverse, up 28 percent, also had its best April ever, and the all-new Trax is off to a strong start with 3,451 sales.
Chevrolet pickup sales totaled 52,988 units, up 24 percent. Silverado deliveries were up 8 percent and the all-new Colorado midsize pickup had its best month since launch, with 7,010 deliveries. The Colorado has now been the industry’s fastest-selling truck for three months in a row, with a “days to turn” of only 15 days.
Spark EV sales were a record 920 units, the Sonic was up 14 percent, the SS was up 6 percent and the Corvette Z06 is one of the industry’s fastest-selling car, with a “days to turn” of only 17 days.
Chevrolet is the industry’s fastest-growing truck brand so far this year and Chevrolet passenger car volumes have increased sequentially each month this year.
Cadillac
Cadillac deliveries in April were up 14 percent and the brand’s calendar-year-to-date sales are in line with 2014.
Escalade sales were up 144 percent. The SRX crossover saw a 41-percent increase and the XTS sedan was up 14 percent.
GMC
GMC had its best first-quarter sales since 2005, and followed that up with a 20-percent increase in April.
GMC pickup sales were up 19 percent, with Sierra up 5 percent and Canyon deliveries totaling 2,432 units. The Sierra and Canyon have the highest average transaction prices (ATPs) in their respective segments, according to PIN.
Denali penetration is at record levels, surpassing 23 percent of retail sales.

General Motors Announces $5.4 Billion in U.S. Plant Investments
PONTIAC, Mich. – General Motors announced today it will invest $5.4 billion in U.S plant improvements during the next three years, including details of $783.5 million for three Michigan facilities.
“These investments are evidence of a company on the move, strategically investing in the people, tools and equipment to produce cars, trucks and crossovers that are built to win in the marketplace, with stunning design, quality and breakthrough technologies,” GM North America President Alan Batey said at the Pontiac Metal Center, where $124 million will be invested.
Two other investments detailed Thursday are $520 million for tooling and equipment for future new vehicle programs at the Lansing Delta Township assembly plant, retaining 1,900 jobs, and $139.5 million for a new body shop and stamping facility upgrades at Pre-Production Operations in Warren.
“The common thread among our investments is the focus on product improvements that benefit customers,” said Cathy Clegg, vice president of GM North America Manufacturing. “Together with our UAW partners, we’re working hard to exceed consumers’ ever-increasing quality expectations.”
All major body panel dies will be pre-tested in Pontiac under regular production conditions, enabling stamping plants to produce quality parts in shorter time; pre-production vehicles in Warren will surface issues long before regular production begins; and new products in Lansing will be among the best the company has built, she said.
The $5.4-billion new investment translates to GM investing in U.S. operations about $5 million a day or $150 million every month for the next three years.
“General Motors is investing in Michigan – and Michiganders,” Gov. Rick Snyder said. “Our state’s automotive heritage and expertise is known around the globe, and GM and its workforce are a major part of that. We’re going to continue to ensure the best environment for GM, the auto industry and all other industries to grow and thrive, creating more and better jobs. That includes connecting and developing the talent to keep the economic engine running at full speed long into our state’s bright future.”
GM will detail the remaining $4.6 billion and identify plants involved over the next several months.
Since June 2009, GM has announced U.S. facility investment of approximately $16.8 billion. About $11.4 billion of that has come since the 2011 UAW-GM National Agreement. In total, these investments have created 3,650 new jobs and secured the positions of approximately 20,700 others.
“By working together, the UAW and GM are making a difference in communities across the United States,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada, who leads the union’s GM Department. “These investments represent the power of our collaboration to create jobs and improve competitiveness, quality and our manufacturing base in this country.”

Cadillac Extends the Top of its Range with CT6 – Advanced Technology Is New formula for the Prestige Sedan

NEW YORK – Cadillac tonight held the world premiere of the 2016 CT6, elevating it to the top of its range and creating a new formula for the prestige sedan through the integration of new technologies developed to achieve dynamic performance, efficiency and agility previously unseen in large luxury cars.
CT6 marks Cadillac’s long-awaited return to the global prestige luxury segment, and is one of eight all-new vehicles the brand will launch by the end of the decade as part of its $12-billion product investment to expand and elevate.
“The CT6 is nothing less than an entirely new approach to premium luxury – and an approach only Cadillac can offer,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of Cadillac. “It is a bold endeavor with unmatched dynamism that reignites a passion for driving in large luxury vehicles. In short, it is prestige luxury reimagined.”
Cadillac CT6 takes drivers to a higher threshold of involvement, with technologies that make them more aware of their surroundings, chassis systems – including active technologies – that make the most of control in all conditions, and powertrains led by an all-new Cadillac Twin Turbo engine that rewards with stirring power on demand. Passengers are ensconced in the brand’s ultimate expression of comfort, luxury and connectivity.
The CT6 features one of the industry’s most advanced automotive body structures, an aluminum-intensive architecture that incorporates 11 different materials to achieve strength, performance and efficiency thresholds practically unmatched among the world’s elite luxury performance sedans.
It is one of the world’s lightest and most agile full-size luxury performance sedans, with dimensions and spaciousness on par with BMW’s short-wheelbase 7-Series, but the approximate weight, agility and efficiency of the smaller Cadillac CTS – which is lighter than a BMW 5-Series. The CT6 is lighter than the BMW 5-Series, 6-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
“We reinvented the approach to structural underpinnings in the quest to develop a unique formula for the prestige luxury performance sedan,” said de Nysschen. “Melding that new approach with the dynamics conveyed in our other award-winning rear-driven sedans – including V-Series – results in something that has been lost in the segment: the exhilaration of a true driver’s car.”
Cadillac focused on three pillars that would coalesce to deliver the CT6’s dynamic experience – and do so with higher levels of presence, elegance and technological innovation to help elevate Cadillac around the world.
“Luxury brands are built from the top down,” said Cadillac Chief Marketing Officer Uwe Ellinghaus. “Adding a dynamic, top-of-the-range car is central to Cadillac’s elevation and global growth.”

About the architecture
The body-in-white of the 2016 Cadillac CT6 is structurally lighter and stiffer than any other dynamically similar vehicle such as the BMW 5-Series or Audi A6. That state-of-the-art architecture is the foundation for its benchmark-establishing agility and vault-like solidity and quietness.
The new architecture has a mixed-material structure with all-aluminum exterior body panels. Engineers conducted 50 million hours of computational analysis – including 200,000 structural simulations – in its development, generating 21 patents.
“Every panel of the body-in-white is optimized with innovative joining techniques,” said Travis Hester, executive chief engineer, Cadillac CT6. “It’s an uncompromising approach that provides the best balance of strength, lightness and refinement.”
Thirteen high-pressure aluminum die castings in the lower body construction reduce complexity and are significant contributors to the architecture’s low mass. The CT6 is approximately 218 pounds (99 kg) lighter than a comparable vehicle using predominantly high-strength steel.
GM’s most advanced body manufacturing methods are used to fabricate the structure, including proprietary aluminum spot welding technology that is more efficient and helps reduce weight. Laser welding, flow drill fasteners and self-piercing rivets are also employed, along with roughly 591 feet (180 meters) of advanced structural adhesives.
Chassis and suspension highlights
The CT6’s rigid, lightweight architecture is the foundation for its segment-challenging agility, enhanced by active-on-demand all-wheel drive, active rear steering and Magnetic Ride Control on the available Active Chassis System.
“To put it succinctly, every wheel drives and every wheel steers,” said Hester. “And with Magnetic Ride Control, every wheel’s dampening is adjusted by the millisecond, for responsiveness and driver control unparalleled in the segment.”
The chassis system also balances responsiveness with segment-best isolation for exceptional refinement. In the front, the CT6 features a lightweight, aluminum-intensive high-arm multilink short-long arm front suspension. At the rear is a five-link independent suspension that uses multiple outer ball joints and cross braces for optimal handling and steering precision.
Active rear steering with the Active Chassis System contributes to greater low-speed agility and high-speed stability. In parking lots, the turning circle is only 37 feet (11.4 m), comparable with the CTS, which has a 114.6-inch wheelbase vs. the CT6’s 122.4-inch wheelbase.
Active-on-demand all-wheel drive is also part of the Active Chassis System, making the most of handling and stability in all weather conditions. Its lightweight, compact design and two-gear transfer case enable greater fuel economy than conventional fixed-torque all-wheel drive systems. All-wheel drive is standard on all CT6 six-cylinder models.
Selectable Tour, Snow/Ice and Sport modes allow the driver to tailor the CT6’s advanced chassis system for practically any weather or road condition.
Bold proportions, exquisite attention to detail
A bold proportion dominated by a long hood and sleek upper body distinguishes the CT6, evolves the brand portfolio and reinforces the agility enabled by the lightweight architecture.
“This is a car designed for passionate drivers,” said Andrew Smith, executive director, Cadillac Global Design. “CT6 is low, wide and sleek, which is just what you’d expect in a lightweight performance sedan. There is a great dash-to-axle proportion that reinforces the dynamics of the rear-wheel-drive architecture.”
The “face” of Cadillac evolves with the CT6 through new executions of the grille and signature lighting elements. The vertical light signature, for example, features new LED light blades that frame the front of the vehicle, with forward illumination from technologically advanced Indirect Fire LED headlamps.
Proportion, craftsmanship and technology also define the CT6’s cabin. Cadillac designers aimed to deliver a bold, elegant and spacious interior. That elegance is expressed in curated environments and in surface sculpture featuring authentic materials, exquisite details and elevated executions of the brand’s signature cut-and-sew interiors. The CT6 uses state-of-the-art technology to reward its occupants with high levels of comfort, connectivity and safety.
“Never before has such craftsmanship and technology been so seamlessly interwoven,” said Smith. “The CT6 represents our next step in the continuing evolution of the Cadillac brand portfolio.”
Production and manufacturing
Production of the 2016 Cadillac CT6 begins at the end of 2015 for the North American market at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which underwent a $384-million investment in tooling and other upgrades to support the manufacture of the CT6 and two other products. Chinese-market models will be assembled at an all-new facility in China starting in early 2016.
The CT6 also will be offered in Europe, Korea, Japan, Israel and the Middle East. Production for those markets begins at Detroit-Hamtramck in early 2016.

From Canopy to City: Chevrolet Means Small Business History with Segment Dates to the 1930s
ETROIT – Ever since vendors have peddled produce to passers-by on the streets of busy cities, Chevrolet has provided vehicles that allows them to reach their customers.
Beginning in 1936, Chevrolet sold the Chevrolet Canopy Pickup – a vehicle based on the popular FB-series half-ton pickup truck. Owners could upfit these vehicles with an optional canvas canopy top and side-drop curtains. During its first model year, Chevrolet saw truck registrations top 200,000 units for the first time in company history.
Thirteen years later, the Chevrolet Canopy Express was unveiled. It was one of 345,000 Chevy Trucks built in 1949. Both the 3100 Series (half-ton) and 3800 Series (1-ton) included variants of the Express model. The 3800 was heavier duty and sported a low rear tailgate and waterproof roll-up curtains, allowing sellers easier access and better protection for their products.
“Before super markets became commonplace, vendors brought produce and baked goods to the buying public in city neighborhoods and the suburbs that were beginning to sprout up across the country at that time,” said Greg Wallace, manager, General Motors Heritage Center. “The Canopy Express body type was suited for any job that needed easy access to the bed of a truck.”
Both vehicles were forerunners of the all-new Chevrolet City Express, a smaller, maneuverable cargo van that, like its predecessors, gives companies like Vital Media Security and Smokey D’s BBQ the same selling power their entrepreneurial brethren enjoyed nearly 80 years ago.
“To this day, small business owners need to remain nimble in a crowded business environment and still be able to reach their customers in a timely manner,” said Ed Peper, vice president, GM Fleet and Commercial. “As we’re already seeing with some of our small business customers, the City Express, with its cargo hauling flexibility and efficient fuel economy, allows them to do just that.”
The addition to Chevrolet’s stable of vehicles offers 122.7 cubic feet (3,474 liters) of customizable cargo space, 24 mpg in the city, and an estimated payload capacity of 1,500 pounds.
