Kroger Opens Culinary Innovation Center
CINCINNATI, Kroger (NYSE: KR) announced today it has opened its Culinary Innovation Center in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.
“Kroger’s new Culinary Innovation Center is an exciting state-of-the-art test kitchen and education center,” said Daniel Hammer, Kroger’s vice president of culinary development and new business. “As we focus on redefining the customer experience and developing talent through food inspiration and uplift, as outlined in Restock Kroger, this R&D lab will allow us to accelerate product development for Our Brands, produce new recipes for Prep + Pared Meal Kits, explore new restaurant concepts, host food tastings and focus groups, and increase our associates’ culinary knowledge.”
Kroger commenced construction on the 12,000-square-feet, LEED-designed Center in March 2017. The commercial kitchen features multiple cooking stations, spaces and capabilities, including technology that allows video streaming of educational sessions to Kroger associates across the country.
“The Center gives our culinary team a fun, modern space to innovate and experiment with food trends, flavors, and ingredients to create new experiences for our customers,” added Mr. Hammer.
Kroger introduced its first restaurant concept Kitchen 1883 in November 2017 and launched its Prep+Pared Meal Kits earlier in the same year, which are available for purchase in stores and through ClickList. Kroger has plans to rapidly grow the footprint of Prep+Pared Meal Kits in 2018.
“Kroger has operated grocery stores since 1883; we know food. People will always eat, but the way they eat will always change. Our new Center is one more tool we have to keep our pulse on customer trends and expand our foodie culture,” said Mr. Hammer.

SEATTLE, — Meredith Corporation (NYSE: MDP; www.meredith.com), the nation’s leading media and marketing company serving 110 million unduplicated U.S. women and 70 percent of American Millennial women, today announced that Allrecipes.com will now feature AmazonFresh as a retailer embedded within the site’s top recipes. This industry-leading innovation will enable home cooks click to purchase a recipe’s ingredients and have them delivered the same day through AmazonFresh home grocery delivery service. The new feature will help millions of home cooks save time as they plan and prepare meals.
Meredith introduces an updated market positioning and logo that reflect the strength of Meredith’s national and local consumer media brands as well as its expanded portfolio of marketing solutions.
Allrecipes is the world’s largest digital food brand, with 80 million users worldwide and 1.5 billion annual visits. While Allrecipes has long incorporated grocery shopping functionality into its site, including geo-targeted grocery offers from retailers across the country, the introduction of AmazonFresh as a featured retailer represents the next major innovation designed to help home cooks discover and prepare meals with ease. Allrecipes is one of the first major food brands to collaborate with AmazonFresh in this capacity, enabling same-day home delivery of recipe ingredients including fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, in addition to frozen and packaged food items.
Cooks who select AmazonFresh as their grocery retailer of choice have the option to send all of the ingredients and products required to prepare the Allrecipes recipe to an AmazonFresh shopping cart, which will also contain detailed product and pricing information. Allrecipes will curate the food brands selected for each recipe ingredient, and once on the AmazonFresh landing page, consumers can change any food brand in their cart as well as select their preferred delivery time – as early as the same day or next morning. Allrecipes’ shopper marketing capabilities already are a proven leader in driving consumers into stores to purchase, and for the first time this integration will extend Allrecipes’ leadership into eCommerce, which, for CPG companies, is the projected source of over 90% of sales’ growth over the next three years, according to Nielsen.
At launch, AmazonFresh will be integrated into many of the highest-trafficked recipes on Allrecipes.com. Over time, Allrecipes will extend the reach of this enhanced eCommerce functionality into all possible recipes on Allrecipes.
“We are proud to lead the way in food innovation for home cooks and for our brand partners,” said Jon Werther, Meredith National Media Group President. “Millions of busy, family-focused home cooks come to Allrecipes.com every day to discover and plan their meals. Our integration with Amazon will make it it easier for millions of home cooks to order all of the ingredients needed for dinner that night or for a weekly meal plan – and have them delivered to their doorstep within hours. We’re providing an unparalleled level of convenience, and making it that much easier to turn the food inspiration our audience sees on Allrecipes into reality.”
The average U.S. consumer makes 1.5 trips to the grocery store each week, spending 41 minutes per trip, or 53 hours over the course of an average year. In addition to helping home cooks save time grocery shopping, this partnership also addresses the shopping trends emerging within the Allrecipes audience: Allrecipes cooks are 33 percent more likely to take advantage of online grocery services than home cooks who don’t visit Allrecipes.com, according to the brand’s October Holiday Cooking and Entertainment Survey.

ADM Wins ‘Most Innovative Food Ingredient’ at Gulfood Excellence Awards
ROLLE, Switzerland, Nov. 20, 2017— Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) has been awarded ‘most innovative food ingredient’ for its natural sweetening solution, Fruit Up® Fiber, at this year’s Gulfood Manufacturing Industry Excellence Awards. The awards recognize best practices and innovation within the food manufacturing industry value chain.
Entries were judged on the additional value the innovations brought to developers, as well as their ability to meet unmet market needs. Growing regulatory pressure, media scrutiny and changing consumer tastes have led many food and beverage developers to focus on reformulation options to reduce the amount of sugar in their products. As a result, reduced sugar alternatives are growing in popularity and becoming a necessity for many companies. Meanwhile, consumers continue to look for clean label products that look, smell and taste great.
Fruit Up Fiber is a source of soluble fiber that provides sweetness with 30 percent less sugar on a dry basis relative to nutritive sweeteners, such as sucrose or glucose. Based on naturally occurring carbohydrates (sugars, sweetening ingredients, polyols and soluble fibers), Fruit Up Fiber can provide developers with a lower sugar, clean label solution for a wide range of food and beverage applications. It has a glycemic index of 40, is also non-GMO, and Halal and Kosher certified.
“Using naturally sourced sweetening ingredients and fibers for sugar reduction gives developers the opportunity to appeal to consumers who are looking to reduce their sugar intake and are also making health and wellness a priority in their eating choices, and Fruit Up Fiber is a great solution to meet this demand,” said Ramesh Sambamoorthy, managing director, Middle East, WILD Flavors and Specialty Ingredients, a business unit of ADM. “We look forward to showcasing how Fruit Up Fiber can help developers create products with a premium positioning and added value across the Middle East region and the world over.”

New Iowa State University Study Finds ADM Flaxseed Oil More Efficient at Enriching Egg Yolks with Omega-3 Fatty Acids
DECATUR, Ill., A recent study conducted by Iowa State University finds Archer Daniels Midland Company’s (NYSE: ADM) flaxseed oil twice as efficient at enriching egg yolks with omega-3 fatty acids when compared to whole, ground flaxseed.
Researchers arrived at this conclusion after examining the egg production, feed intake and egg weight of three distinct groups of laying hens. These groups included a control group placed on a diet without flaxseed oil, a group fed a diet of feed enriched with ADM’s flaxseed oil, and a final group given feed mixed with whole, ground flaxseed. After eight weeks, researchers determined that ADM’s flaxseed oil transferred the omega-3 fatty acids from the feed to the egg yolk two times more efficiently than whole, ground flaxseed.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of this study,” said Dr. Kristjan Bregendahl, poultry technical manager for ADM Animal Nutrition. “By using ADM’s flaxseed oil, egg producers will now be able to improve the efficiency of their feed without compromising the omega-3 content of their eggs.”
“ADM is always looking for ways to better serve our customers and improve their bottom line,” said John O’Donnell, commercial manager at ADM’s flax and canola processing facility in Red Wing, Minnesota. “This study proves customers who use ADM’s flaxseed oil can save money by providing their flock with an effective ration that delivers the same results.”
For more information, contact ADM Animal Nutrition at 866-666-7626, email animalnutrition@adm.com, or visit www.ADMAnimalNutrition.com. Complete findings of this study can also be read in the June issue of Poultry Science.

US Forest Service Actively Involved in California Wildfire Response
Alongside its local, State and Federal partners, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s U.S. Forest Service remains actively involved in response to wildfires in California . While these fires are not on National Forest System lands, the Forest Service provides additional firefighting personnel, incident management teams, and equipment resources to support the State of California and other federal agencies whose resources are challenged by the size, numbers, and severity of these fatal fires.
“The people of California are not in this alone. This is a unified effort that involves the dedication of the whole firefighting community,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tony Tooke. “The Forest Service has boots on the ground and is providing other critical resources in California, as well as other parts of the American West, and we will remain as long as necessary.”
While Cal Fire is leading overall operations, as of Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 the Forest Service has committed over 1,500 firefighters to the effort. Forest Service firefighting resources currently supporting state and local fires include: 12 Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crews specially trained in wildfire suppression tactics; 103 Type 2 crews; 285 engines; 5 dozers; 1 water tender; 55 support vehicles; 23 fixed wing aircraft (includes air tankers, water scoopers, lead planes and air attack); and 8 helicopters (Type 1 and Type 2).
Additionally, over $6.6 million worth of supplies and equipment have so far been mobilized by agency cache warehouses for such items as: water handling equipment, hoses, nozzles, fittings, foam, folding portable water tanks, batteries, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), etc. Additional crews, equipment and aircraft are on order.
Currently, the Forest Service also has 15 large air tankers committed, 2 DC-10 very large Air tankers, 2 C-130s with air tanker modules, 34 helicopters and 3 scooper aircraft for water drops.

Kraft Heinz and Oprah Winfrey Collaborate to Create O, That’s Good!
PITTSBURGH & CHICAGO- The Kraft Heinz Company and media icon Oprah Winfrey today announced the debut of O, That’s Good!, a line of four flavorful soups and four savory sides that bring a nutritious twist on comfort food classics to everyone’s table. O, That’s Good! is the first introduction from Mealtime Stories, LLC, the previously announced joint venture between Kraft Heinz and Oprah Winfrey.
Together, Oprah and Kraft Heinz worked with a team of creative chefs to develop the new refrigerated brand using real ingredients and no artificial flavors or dyes. Families can rediscover their favorite comfort foods with unexpected nutritious twists. For example, in our Original Mashed Potatoes we’ve replaced some of the potato with mashed cauliflower and in our Broccoli Cheddar Soup we’ve replaced some of the cheese with velvety butternut squash – increasing the number of veggies while keeping all of the rich flavor in every bite.
“I love healthy foods and eating from my garden,” said Winfrey. “When Kraft Heinz approached me for a food line, what got my attention is making nutritious comfort foods more accessible to everyone. This product line is real, delicious food with a twist. You’ll feel good about serving it for your family.”
“We are thrilled to bring our collective vision to life with O, That’s Good! Soups and Sides,” said Nina Barton, SVP of Marketing, Innovation and Research & Development for the US business at Kraft Heinz. “With Oprah’s partnership, we’re delivering unbeatable taste and quality that is sure to please everyone at the table.”
Barton added that “refrigerated products are on the rise and we saw an opportunity to drive excitement in this section of the store with convenient soups and sides made with real ingredients and easy preparation.”
Ten percent of Mealtime Stories’ profits will be equally split between charitable organizations Rise Against Hunger and Feeding America to support the fight against hunger. The Kraft Heinz Company Foundation intends to make annual donations on behalf of Mealtime Stories to these charities until the joint venture becomes profitable.
The O, That’s Good! Soups (SRP $4.99) and Sides (SRP$4.49) are rolling out now in the refrigerated section in select grocery stores and will be available nationwide in October 2017.

CINCINNATI, Aug. 28, 2017 — The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) Foundation announced today the commitment of $100,000 to the Houston Food Bank, America’s largest food bank serving 600 hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties, to supply operational support and meals to families affected by the floods. For every social share of the #KrogerCares post, the Foundation will donate $5 to the Food Bank, up to $100,000. Additionally, Kroger is inviting customers to join giving efforts by donating through in-store programs.
“We are quickly mobilizing our resources -food, dollars, vendors, community partners, customers and associates- to do our part to help the Greater Houston community and its residents during this devastating and unprecedented storm, ” said Jessica Adelman, Kroger’s group vice president of corporate affairs. “We know that meals matter, and it’s imperative that we help feed and support Texans during this trying time.”

USDA and SCORE Launch Innovative Mentorship Effort to Support New Farmers and Ranchers
DES MOINES, Iowa, – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with officials from SCORE, the nation’s largest volunteer network of expert business mentors, to support new and beginning farmers. Today’s agreement provides new help resources for beginning ranchers, veterans, women, socially disadvantaged Americans and others, providing new tools to help them both grow and thrive in agri-business.
“Shepherding one generation to the next is our responsibility. We want to help new farmers, veterans, and people transitioning from other industries to agriculture,” said Secretary Perdue. “They need land, equipment, and access to capital, but they also need advice and guidance. That’s what SCORE is all about.”
SCORE matches business professionals and entrepreneurs with new business owners to mentor them through the process of starting-up and maintaining a new business. USDA and its partners across rural America are working with SCORE to support new farming and ranching operations, and identify and recruit mentors with a wealth of agricultural experience.
Secretary Perdue announced the new partnership in Des Moines during the Iowa Agriculture Summit. Perdue was joined by Steve Records, Vice-President of Field Operations for SCORE in signing a Memorandum of Understanding that will guide USDA and SCORE as they partner in the mentorship effort, which will soon expand to other states.
“SCORE’s mission to help people start and grow vibrant small businesses is boosted by this new partnership with USDA. America’s farmers, ranchers and agri-businesses will benefit from the business knowledge and expertise SCORE can offer,” said Records. “The partnership allows both SCORE and USDA to serve more people while providing America’s farmers added support to lead to more sound business operations, create profitable farms with sustainable growth and create new jobs. We are excited at the opportunity to extend SCORE’s impact to our farmers and the agriculture industry.”
SCORE mentors will partner with USDA and a wide array of groups already hard at work serving new and beginning farmers and ranchers, such as the FFA, 4-H, cooperative extension and land grant universities, nonprofits, legal aid groups, banks, technical and farm advisors. These partnerships will expand and integrate outreach and technical assistance between current and retired farmers and agri-business experts and new farmers.
This joint initiative leverages SCORE’s 10,000 existing volunteer mentors and USDA’s expertise and presence in agricultural communities to bring no-cost business mentoring to rural and agricultural entrepreneurs. This initiative will also be another tool to empower the work of many community-based organizations, cooperative extension and land grant universities working with beginning farmers in their communities. SCORE mentorship will also be available to current farmers and ranchers. Anyone interested in being a mentor can get more information and sign up on the USDA New Farmers’ website at https://newfarmers.usda.gov/mentorship.

ADM Opens Soy Processing Capabilities at Oilseeds Plant in Spyck, Germany
SPYCK, Germany,—Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) has successfully crushed its first non-GMO soybeans at its facility in Spyck, northwestern Germany. Located close to the Dutch border, the site was previously only used to crush rape and sunflower seeds. The new switch capacity is part of ADM’s long-term strategy to expand its network of European soy processing plants, enabling it to better service its soybean meal customers and support local farmers in increasing the region’s soybean acreage.
“The extended soybean crushing capacity in Spyck will help us meet customer demand as the European non-GMO soybean market continues to grow,” says Jon Turney, general manager, European soybean crush at ADM. “The additional flexibility that we now have also gives us the ability to quickly respond to changing market dynamics for rape, sunflower and soy in the future.”
ADM also crushes non-GMO soybeans at its facility in Straubing, Germany. In the past year, it has been working with farmers and industry accreditation bodies to create further opportunities to grow and market soybeans across northwest Europe.
“We are committed to growing the soybean industry in this region, and we are working hard to help farmers in France and along the Danube see the value of growing soybeans within their rotation,” said Rene van der Poel, commercial manager for Oilseeds in Germany at ADM.
“It is a great achievement for the team in Spyck to execute this latest step in our growth strategy, both on time and on budget. Flexible crush capacities, scale and carefully managed production costs per unit all remain key to our ongoing success in the region over the long term,” said John Grossmann, president, European crush and origination.”
