Security and Defense Industry Focus – Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, ADT, Johnson Controls and others
The defense industry, including aerospace, is huge and complex. It serves both military and commercial markets. It designs, manufactures, and services everything from commercial planes to jet fighters to single-prop private planes and traffic helicopters, from the space shuttle to mission control software, from radar systems to rocket-guidance systems, from missiles and submarines to aircraft carriers.
Its vast array of products includes tanks, spy satellites, flight simulators, munitions, commercial and private jets, communications satellites, consumer electronics, and (job seekers take note) countless small parts, components, and subsystems. The industry comprises not only the big employers (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon are the big three in aerospace), but also thousands of smaller suppliers—makers of everything from airplane cabinetry to high-tech materials to specialized machine tools for cutting silent submarine propellers.
Today, the industry is significantly smaller than it was in its heyday—and that translates to more competition for fewer jobs. But make no mistake about it: The aerospace and defense industry remains immense.
Companies in the security systems services industry sell, install, and monitor commercial and residential electronic security alarm systems. Major companies include US-based ADT and Johnson Controls, along with G4S (UK), Secom (Japan), and Securitas (Sweden).
Global security services industry revenues total more than $130 billion, according to Statista. Asia (excluding Japan holds the largest share of the market at about 40%, followed by Europe and North America. Emerging markets with rising middle-class populations are expected to see the strongest growth.
The US security systems services industry includes about 7,000 establishments (single-location companies and units of multi-location companies) with combined annual revenue of about $22 billion.

“Altera’s proud to participate in Lockheed Martin’s demonstration along with OUSD-R&E SHIP program. Leveraging decades of leadership in chiplet development and manufacturing has led to the rapid readiness and availability of production quality, SWAP-centric MCP-2 products for future mission requirements.” said John Sotir, Senior Director, Military Aerospace and Government Business and State-of-the-Art Heterogeneous Integration Packaging (SHIP).
What’s Next?
The success of this demonstration shows promise for continued collaboration with industry and commercial partners using U.S.-built semiconductors to achieve DoD objectives.
This technology can be used for future platforms in many different ways depending on the mission at hand. It can deliver targeting information and situational awareness for our allies.
Lockheed Martin will continue to demonstrate Gen12 Electronic Support (ES) and Electronic Attack (EA) capabilities for customers and cultivate near-term transition opportunities into DoD Programs of Record.
Background
The SHIP program focuses on the development, delivery and eventual transition of microelectronics devices into DoD systems. The SHIP program’s objective is to create U.S.-made, trusted microelectronics that enable significant SWaP reductions in DoD systems.
The SHIP program is part of a broader effort to enhance U.S.-based, secure and economically viable capabilities to support critical warfighting missions.
As part of the SHIP program, multiple MCP devices were created in record time by Altera. Lockheed Martin was the early access partner for the transition of the MCP-2 device through the Stimulating Transition for Advanced Microelectronics Packaging (STAMP) contract.
Through the STAMP contract, awarded by OUSD-R&E, Lockheed Martin and Altera worked to develop optimized architectures that leveraged the Altera commercial MCP-2 chip to apply specifically to electronic warfare applications, accelerating the transition of capabilities to the warfighter.

President’s Investing in America Agenda Delivers More Than $142 Million to Bolster Resilience to Drought and Boost Water Supplies
RENO, Nev. — Acting Deputy Secretary of the Interior Laura Daniel-Davis today announced a $142 million investment from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to advance drought resilience and boost water supplies across the country, as part of the Investing in America agenda. The selected projects are expected to provide about 40,000 acre-feet of annual recycled water, enough to support more than 160,000 people a year.
President Biden’s Investing in America agenda represents the largest investment in climate resilience in the nation’s history and is providing much-needed resources to enhance Western communities’ resilience to drought and climate change. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Bureau of Reclamation is investing a total of $8.3 billion over five years for water infrastructure projects, including rural water, water storage, conservation and conveyance, nature-based solutions, dam safety, water purification and reuse, and desalination. Since the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was signed in November 2021, Reclamation has announced more than $4.1 billion for more than 537 projects.
Acting Deputy Secretary of the Interior Daniel-Davis made the announcement after a tour of the Truckee Meadows Water Authority, which is receiving $30 million from today’s announcement to enhance water reclamation infrastructure at the Advanced Purified Water Facility.
“The Biden-Harris administration is bringing every resource to bear to ensure that we both minimize the impacts of climate-fueled drought and develop a long-term plan to build resilience and facilitate water conservation,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Daniel-Davis. “Access to clean and reliable water is essential for feeding families, growing crops, sustaining wildlife and the environment, and powering agricultural businesses. We also recognize the incredible potential for economic opportunity and job creation, as we work together to address the intensifying effects of climate change.”
“We must use every tool that works to develop water sources that build resiliency throughout the West,” said Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton. “This funding through Reclamation’s water recycling and desalination construction programs enables partners to develop new water supplies through treatment of water that can be a part of the water supply portfolio.”
Water Recycling Projects
Approximately $85 million from today’s announcement will go to six water recycling projects in California, Hawaii, Kansas, Nevada and Texas that reclaim and reuse wastewater and impaired ground and surface water. Funding can be used for planning, design and construction of water recycling facilities in partnership with local governments.
Desalination Projects
Another $57.5 million from today’s announcement will go to four desalination projects in southern California to increase water management flexibility and make water supplies more reliable through the treatment of seawater or brackish water.
Projects are funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and annual appropriations. View a full list of projects on the Bureau of Reclamation’s website.
Today’s announcement builds on $179 million announced last month for large scale water recycling projects to help communities develop local, drought-resistant water supplies by turning previously unusable water sources into clean, reliable ones. Reclamation’s Large-Scale Water Recycling Program, launched in 2023 as a result of new funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, incentivizes conservation projects at a larger scale, with no cap on project size, and will play an important role in helping communities develop local, drought-resistant water supplies by turning unusable water sources into clean, reliable ones.

Mentorship: A Look at RTX’s Employee Resource Group for the Armed Services Community
When Brandi Carlton became a U.S. Army soldier, she learned right away how hard it can be to work in a male-dominated environment.
As her unit’s maintenance manager, she was tracking vehicle maintenance and service schedules, managing a team of mechanics – and feeling unsure about it all.
“It was a struggle to get past the self-doubts on my ability to lead in an area where I was not the expert,” said Carlton, now an aftermarket planning and strategy specialist at Collins Aerospace, an RTX business.
A mentor – the battalion executive officer – made all that easier, she said, showing her she could successfully lead in the unit. Six months later, she moved up to a new role, free of the self-doubt that had held her back.
Now, as the professional development lead for RTX VETS, the company’s employee resource group for the armed services community, Carlton is driven to help others find meaningful mentorship experiences through leading VAALOR – Veterans and Allies Advancing Leadership, Outreach, and Resilience – the group’s new mentorship program.
“It’s about connecting our veterans to the rest of the community, and ultimately strengthening the team across RTX,” said Carlton of the program, which launched in April 2024 with hundreds of participants companywide. “Within the military, everything is centered around teamwork – that’s ingrained in how we operate.”
The value of veterans and their families
For RTX VETS global chair Charles Moore, showing the value of the company’s veterans and military family members is paramount. The VAALOR program was designed to do just that by opening to all employees – not just those in the military community.
The program pairs every participant with two people: a mentor whose job is one level above theirs, and a mentee one level below, for a six-month session. Participants are expected to meet with their mentor and mentee once a month, and come together in group virtual sessions hosted by RTX VETS.
“We are hoping that in all the pairings there will be some growth and understanding of cultures and the differences and the value a veteran brings to our community,” said Carlton.
“The military is a cultural melting pot and we are thrown in different situations that are often unexpected,” Carlton said of veterans’ experience. “We may live far away from family and not have a support system established, so we have learned to operate in an environment where we are forced to build connections with our team, despite our differences. It’s that resiliency and being able to overcome adversity.”
Moore, a U.S. Army veteran, is also focused on expanding participation in the group’s internal database of these employees, which RTX VETS created and launched in 2023. The database lists the skills and experiences employees acquired in the military and allows managers to find and request veterans with that specific knowledge.
“We haven’t had a business request come in that we haven’t been able to help with,” said Moore, an associate director at Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business. “We are able to connect a business leader with a veteran that has experience with the product they are selling. It connects employees discreetly to their background.”
The group is also developing an internal guide for launch this year that offers advice on navigating life changes common in military families, such as moving to a new state. It will also include tips on career advancement and arranging flexible work schedules to accommodate childcare needs.
“When you are moving across the country, you have a tremendous amount of unknown,” said RTX VETS global co-chair Lindsay Krueger, an associate director of strategy at Collins Aerospace and also a military spouse. “You only have a little bit of time to figure out a whole new life. RTX VETS can help a spouse navigate this huge life change by mapping out how to continue a career, educate managers, and enable everyone to work through that change together.”
“For a military family member, knowing the company sees the struggle and sacrifice and is trying to find ways to support you is invaluable.”
Another important goal this year is partnering with the company on a campaign directed toward its U.S employee population. The effort will encourage veterans and dependents of active-duty military and veterans in the U.S. to self-identify – part of an effort across the company to better understand several employee populations, as well as improve benefits and services.
“What we learn as a result of the campaign will help U.S. employees with the support they need to thrive,” said Nicole McCormick, a senior manager of DE&I benchmarking for RTX. “It’s another way we’re working to foster an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, respected and protected.”
Seeing the value in yourself
Carlton remembers finding her first mentor as “that one pivotal moment for me,” she said. “It helps you see the value in yourself.”
Now, since joining the company in 2022, Carlton also counts joining RTX VETS as another key moment in her career.
“Being a part of the ERG has really helped me fulfill my desire as a veteran and a military spouse to be part of something bigger than myself,” she said. “It helps me give back to my community and fill that desire to continue a life of service.”

Next Phase of DHS Campaign to Stop Fentanyl Will Focus on Interdiction and Supply Chain Disruption
WASHINGTON –– Following the success of Operations Blue Lotus and Four Horsemen, which stopped nearly 10,000 pounds of fentanyl during their two-month run and led to 284 arrests in those two months, today the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the next phase of its surge campaign to target and prevent fentanyl from entering the United States. The next two Operations, “Artemis” and “Rolling Wave,” will consist of multidisciplined interagency jump teams at strategic locations with an enhanced focus on disrupting the supply chain used in the development and movement of fentanyl.
Operation Artemis, led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), will leverage intelligence and investigative information derived from Operation Blue Lotus to target the fentanyl supply chain and interdict items required in the production of fentanyl. This work will be supported by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Concurrently, Operation Rolling Wave will surge inbound inspections at Southwest Border checkpoints, covering every sector and leveraging predictive analysis and intelligence sharing.
HSI will continue surging resources to Ports of Entry, where 90 percent of fentanyl is trafficked primarily in cars and trucks, while also increasing its coordination of operations to target the fentanyl supply chain under Blue Lotus 2.0. CBP will run a parallel intelligence and analysis operation, Operation Argus, to provide trade-focused analysis in support of Blue Lotus 2.0 and Artemis.
“The intelligence and investigative work being conducted by DHS Agencies and with our federal partners to disrupt the fentanyl supply chain is unprecedented,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “These operations build on the success of Operations Blue Lotus and Four Horsemen, which from March through May prevented nearly 10,000 pounds of fentanyl from entering the United States and yielded invaluable insights into criminal networks. Cartels have been producing synthetic drugs for years, and the DHS workforce is unwavering in its dedication to stopping them. In the past two years, DHS seized more fentanyl than in the previous five years combined, and these operations are an example of how we are broadening that effort.”
These operations build on a tremendous amount of work across DHS:
DHS has initiated major investigative and enforcement operations targeting fentanyl, its chemical precursors, and the supply chain.
HSI and CBP previously established Border Enforcement Security Taskforce (BEST) units at CBP’s international mail facilities (IMFs), express consignment hubs, land border ports of entry, and international airports.
DHS investment in non-intrusive inspection technology (NII), including the deployment of Multi Energy Portals (MEP) in the cargo environment that are significantly expanding our ability to screen traffic through Ports of Entry.
“The men and women of CBP, together with our partners, are working on the front lines of the fight against fentanyl – aggressively targeting and disrupting drug trafficking organizations at the source,” said CBP Acting Commissioner Troy A. Miller. “The new operations will build on the successful pairing of law enforcement partnerships and technological advancements to keep these devastating drugs out of our communities.”
“The incredible efforts and outcomes of Homeland Security Investigations special agents during Operation Blue Lotus was just the beginning of this ongoing fight against the opioid epidemic,” said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deputy Director and Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director Tae D. Johnson. “HSI is continuing this fight against transnational criminal organizations head-on, utilizing every investigative resource available, together with our partners to disrupt and dismantle these illicit narcotics supply chains.”
HSI has also deployed additional dedicated teams to every Special Agent in Charge (SAC) office throughout the country performing fentanyl investigation operations, including work to identify transnational criminal organization networks and to target dark web vendors. HSI is also bolstering support for ongoing initiatives including Operations Hydra, which uses computer-based analytic tools to go after TCO chemical supplies; Pelican Bones, which includes a focus on financial tools used by criminal organizations; and Chain Breaker, which targets equipment needed to manufacture pills; as well as additional personnel deployed at express consignment facilities.
In addition to their disruption of fentanyl smuggling, these operations are also designed to continue to improve interagency cooperation and strengthen regional partnerships, shared intelligence, and coordinated operations.
DHS will announce the results of the operations in the coming weeks.

Women CyberSecurity Society and CompTIA Partner to Prepare Women for Careers in Cybersecurity
VANCOUVER, BC — Twenty women are preparing for careers in cybersecurity through a training program offered by the Women CyberSecurity Society (WCS2), Canada’s first and only nonprofit organization dedicated to attracting more women to pursue and excel in cyber careers, and CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the information technology (IT) industry and workforce.
The two organisations have partnered to address the dual challenges of training and certifying more cybersecurity professionals and bringing more women into the tech workforce.
“There is a global shortfall of new professionals entering the cybersecurity sector and one of our key aims for this program is to demonstrate to individuals from all walks of life that it is possible to reskill into cybersecurity as long as you have the passion and tenacity to succeed,” said Lisa Kearney, president and CEO of WCS2.
Women comprise just 10% of Canada’s cybersecurity workforce. Even more alarming, an estimated 50% of women in ICT drop out of the tech workforce in the first four years of their careers. While data shows that working women have been among the demographics hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, the field of cybersecurity offers a unique opportunity for women everywhere looking to skill, upskill and find employment in a new occupation.
“CompTIA is dedicated to resolving the global shortfall of new professionals entering the cybersecurity sector,” said Zeshan Sattar, director of learning and skills certification at CompTIA. “Our partnership with WCS2 is our latest effort to widen participation and increase the diversity of people interested in entering the field.”
The International Women in Cyber Day Scholarship was created to provide training, certification, mentoring and career skills to diverse candidates seeking to advance their cybersecurity careers. Nearly 150 women applied for scholarships. The women selected for the scholarships are at various stages in the careers. Some currently work in technology and are looking for advancement opportunities, while others are transitioning from jobs in different industries to join the tech workforce for the first time.
Between January and March, scholars in this program are working to earn the coveted CompTIA Security+ credential, using CompTIA CertMaster Learn with integrated labs, and CertMaster Practice learning resources to help them progress. Their training is delivered via a series of workshops led by veteran cybersecurity lecturer and IT trainer, Rebecca Harrop.
“We are working closely with the candidates on our flipped classroom program and are looking forward to sharing their successes as they strive to become CompTIA Security+ certified professionals,” CompTIA’s Sattar said.
“Training and certification are key components to advancing and retaining women in cybersecurity careers,” Kearney said. “The WCS2 Career Advancement Program also offers scholars career planning, mentorship, and internship opportunities. Over the next several months, we will be working one on one with each scholarship recipient to ensure they are positioned to succeed and advance their careers in cybersecurity.”

Whilst blockchain analysis tools have helped build trust in blockchains, public and private sector clients are now struggling with managing seized assets like cryptocurrencies”.
“It was through the lens of this emerging challenge we could see that a specific solution for the industry simply didn’t exist. By combining our in-house, experience in crypto investigations and asset forfeiture with strategic partnerships across industry leaders in investigations, analytics and custody, we are marching forward in Asset Reality’s mission to make crypto safer and fairer. Partnering with companies like Digivault and benefitting from the expertise they bring to the table, makes our mission much easier”.
As part of the partnership, Digivault and Asset Reality will also work together to drive greater awareness of industry threats, and advocate for sensible industry compliance standards.
“We seek out partners that share our ethos and focus, so together we can play a critical role in driving the industry forward. Digivault, as part of the EQONEX group, delivers a crucial component in our efforts to help victims of crime and law enforcers, and we are excited to extend our efforts to jointly educate and advocate for ways to enhance the industry,” said Hugo Elliott, co-founder Asset Reality.
