CGTN: China-Africa friendship continues to flourish on vaccine, trade, renewable energy
BEIJING, Nov. 30, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — China-Africa friendship is expected to continue to flourish as cooperation is further deepened in various areas after the ongoing 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Dakar, Senegal.
China will provide an additional one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Africa, carry out 10 projects on poverty alleviation and agriculture, and conduct more programs with Africa in various areas, announced President Xi Jinping on Monday when addressing the opening ceremony of the meeting via video link.
Elaborating on the secret of China-Africa friendship and looking to the future development of their relations, he highlighted unity against the pandemic, deepening practical cooperation, promoting green development, and safeguarding fairness and justice.
Cooperation against COVID-19
“To reach the target set by the African Union of vaccinating 60 percent of the African population against COVID-19 by 2022, China will provide another one billion doses of vaccines to Africa, of which 600 million doses will be provided free,” Xi said.
During the toughest times in China’s fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, African countries and regional organizations such as the African Union (AU) provided strong support to China. After COVID-19 struck Africa, China supplied 50 African countries and the AU Commission with COVID-19 vaccines.
“China will never forget African countries’ profound friendship,” Xi said, adding that China will also carry out 10 medical and health projects for African countries and send 1,500 medical team members and public health experts to Africa.
Earlier this week, the main building of the Chinese-funded headquarters for the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was structurally completed.
Practical cooperation in various areas
China will work with Africa to expand trade and investment, share experience in poverty alleviation, and strengthen cooperation on digital economy and renewable energy, Xi said.
China will send 500 agricultural experts to Africa, work closely with African countries to implement nine major projects on healthcare, poverty alleviation, trade, investment, digital innovation, green development, capacity building, cultural exchanges and security, he added.
Since the founding of FOCAC, Chinese companies have utilized various funds to help African countries build and upgrade more than 10,000 km of railways, nearly 100,000 km of highways, nearly 1,000 bridges and 100 ports, and 66,000 km of power transmission and distribution network, according to a white paper titled “China and Africa in the New Era: A Partnership of Equals” released on Friday.
Building China-Africa community with a shared future
This year marks the 65th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between China and African countries.
Hailing the spirit of China-Africa friendship and cooperation, Xi said it reflects the two sides’ experience of sharing weal and woe and serves as the source of strength for furthering China-Africa ties.
Over the past 65 years, China and Africa have forged unbreakable fraternity in the struggle against imperialism and colonialism, and embarked on a distinct path of cooperation in the journey toward development and revitalization, he said.
“Together, we have written a splendid chapter of mutual assistance amidst complex changes, and set a shining example for building a new type of international relations,” he said.
Xi put forward the principles of China’s Africa policy: sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, and pursuing the greater good and shared interests.
At the initiative of both China and African countries, FOCAC was inaugurated at its first Ministerial Conference in Beijing in October 2000, with the goals of responding to the challenges emerging from economic globalization and seeking common development.
FOCAC now has 55 members, comprising China, the 53 African countries that have diplomatic relations with China, and the AU Commission.

Small Businesses Get Injection Of Support To Tackle Skills Gaps And Labor Shortages
TORONTO, Nov. 8, 2021 /CNW/ – Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in four regions of Canada will get a much needed boost backed by 50 chambers of commerce and boards of trade. Many have faced acute labour market disruption due to the pandemic and need critical access to resources and tools to bolster skill development and talent retention to support future growth.
The Future Skills Centre (FSC) is investing $3.7 million in a partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to launch an online training and learning management platform that will (support at least 200 small businesses in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
The platform will include curated content that builds on work spearheaded by the Diversity Institute and utilizes Magnet’s technical infrastructure to connect users to the content. SMEs will be able to access a wide variety of free resources including ones on leadership, diversity and inclusion, mental health and wellness, digital skills and regulatory compliance. These will be in the form of short courses, e-learning modules and other workforce tools.
SMEs form the backbone of the Canadian economy, employing almost 90 per cent of all Canadians who work in the private sector. Although they drive economic growth, these businesses often cannot stay competitive as they lack the resources to upskill and train their employees – hindering growth, recruitment and retention of new and diverse workers.
This investment is part of FSC’s strategy to test approaches that anticipate and address labour market disruption and invest in research and training partnerships that prepare people for the future of work. FSC recently announced partnerships in key sectors.
QUOTES
“Small businesses are at the heart of communities across the country but they have been the hardest hit by the pandemic. This partnership will help forge a path to economic recovery for them by sharing skills and training content that is cost-effective and customized to meet the unique needs of individual companies. We’re proud to work with the Future Skills Centre and our key partners to deliver vital resources for small businesses through our local chambers of commerce and boards of trade.”
– Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
“As the country’s economic recovery is underway, Canadians need access to skills development opportunities that will help them advance their careers and be better positioned in a digital economy. This project from the Future Skills Centre will help accomplish that while also supporting small businesses and making them, and their employees, more agile to respond to the needs of the labour market and economy.”
– Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion
“We know that many businesses work on tight margins with not much extra time or money to figure out a skills strategy for their workforce. Through this innovative collaboration, we’re working side by side to help small businesses address the challenges they face in shifting to new business models and having a place to turn to for support in learning new skills. Building business solutions by creating digital tools and resources is crucial for the workforce of the future.”
– Pedro Barata, Executive Director, Future Skills Centre
“Even pre-COVID-19, 40 percent of SMEs identified skills shortages as a major competitive challenge. Most SMEs can’t afford the dedicated human resources capacity needed to balance competing demands of supporting recruitment, advancing upskilling and improving diversity and inclusion. This new platform will provide an opportunity to build critical mass to curate training opportunities, build inclusive human resources and share best practices to get SMEs the talent they need.”
– Wendy Cukier, director of Ryerson University’s Diversity Institute and academic research lead of the Future Skills Centre
QUICK FACTS
A centralized digital library will host curated and shareable content such as resources and tools in a number critical topics and unlock organizational human resources capacity for SMEs.
Training content will be identified, sourced and validated to meet the needs of SMEs across Canada, including at least 30% of SMEs led by equity-seeking groups. Training on diversity and inclusion aims to reduce hiring barriers for these groups.
Businesses will develop, submit and digitize their own learning content to share with other SMEs. Content can also be adapted to ensure it meets users’ needs.

Ibrahim Al-Mutrif, the founder of the Saudi American Partners in Development (SAPD), announced ongoing contacts with various business groups to form a business partnership
WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The initiative is moving forward with the aim to develop a new business strategic partnership between companies from both countries. The founder believes both countries shall benefit from the initiative, strongly adding that “the two nations have so much to hold on to, eighty-years of strategic relations, that would not be easy to break and extremely costly to replace.”
The founder succeeded in identifying potential partners, creating shared vision (and mission) and establishing specific roles and responsibilities. An ongoing phase involves contacting selected Saudi groups to join the SAPD initiative. The driving force behind this ambitious initiative is Dr. Ibrahim Al-Mutrif, the Chairman and Co-Founder of The Online Publishers LLC, aka TOP, the President of the Prosperity Well Economic Consulting, the former Deputy Governor of the Saudi General Investment Authority, the Dean of Faculty and Associate Professor of International Relations at KFUPM, the Secretary General of the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the CEO World Trade Center Saudi Holding. Dr. Ibrahim serves as a Board member for the Committee for International Trade and the former VP and Board of Governor’s member of the World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises.

After one-year covid caused delay, the foundation for accomplishing the aims of the SAPD is in place. Dr. Al-Mutrif see no reason why the project cannot takeoff as planned.

Uniquely Affected By The Pandemic, Downtown Economies Still The Biggest Job Centers In Most Regions
RIVERSIDE, Calif., Oct. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The demise of dense downtown areas in the United States has been predicted throughout, and long before, the COVID-19 pandemic. But according to a new analysis released today by the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development, downtowns are far from dying and today continue to be the largest job centers in most regions across the nation.
While the report identifies unique challenges facing downtowns due to pandemic-driven shifts in behavior, these changes are not likely to outweigh the things that have traditionally drawn businesses and workers to centralized urban areas.
“A century ago Henry Ford predicted that cities were ‘doomed’ due to the mass production of cars, and those same predictions have come with every communication innovation since, from telephone to fax to email to Zoom,” said Taner Osman, Research Manager at the Center for Forecasting and the report’s author. “The prized benefits that central cities generally deliver – better access to workers, business services, infrastructure, and networking and innovation opportunities – have made downtowns much more resilient than people believed over the decades and firms still want a presence in these areas despite higher costs.”
The economies of downtowns, or ‘central business districts’ have been doubly affected by the pandemic as they are home to both a hefty share of jobs in industries that suffered large employment losses, such as Leisure and Hospitality, and also to industries where work-from-home trends are strongest.
The most significant effect will likely stem from work-from-home trends. Throughout the pandemic, office workers have been by far the most likely to work from home. At the same time, in the 100 largest regions in the nation, office jobs account for 40% of all positions in central business districts. As more office employees work from home, the pandemic has had the effect of lowering the daytime populations of downtowns, affecting multiple industries beyond the office.
The principal question is whether working from home will become a new normal. “The endurance of work-from-home trends will ultimately depend on worker productivity,” said Osman. Academic research has come down on both sides of this question, with some studies revealing greater productivity at home contrasted against a large body of research that finds face-to-face contact is a key source of productivity.

The Onyx Initiative Marks its First Anniversary with a String of Successes in Applications, Programming, Partnerships & Career Opportunities for Black Students and Recent Graduates
TORONTO, Oct. 21, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ – The Onyx Initiative, a Toronto-based non-profit established to bridge the pervasive gap in the recruitment and selection of Black college and university students and recent graduates for roles in corporate Canada, is celebrating a slew of achievements since launching one year ago today including exponential growth in the number of participants for its national Scholars Program and increasing support from some of the largest and most prominent companies on the TSX, such as Bell, TD Bank Group, Amazon Canada, Telus, Walmart Canada, PwC, HP Canada, National Bank, Lululemon Canada, and many more.
“It’s an incredible feeling to see our desire to make a real difference in the lives of others evolve into an idea that garnered tremendous enthusiasm and now an organization which in just one year has surpassed our greatest expectations,” said Nigela Purboo, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Onyx Initiative. “While there is still much more work to be done, the good that has been born out of unspeakable tragedies and a global social justice movement is a testament to both the necessity of dismantling systemic inequality and the power of collaboration.”
For the Onyx team, the noteworthy internships and full-time roles that many scholars have secured as a result of the 55 events the organization has curated, to enhance their personal and professional development and connect them with key corporate executives, is as crucial as the premier alliances that have been forged. These events include Employer Discovery Sessions with Rogers Communications, Air Miles, CIBC, Manulife, Nasdaq, Dentsu, and The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, to name a few. As well as Career Hacking webinars focused on resume preparation, optimal interviews skills, mental health and well-being, resilience, and navigating diverse work environments. The programming endeavors also encompass a LinkedIn Learning Club Series, career exploration meetups, and most recently a virtual career fair, in partnership with Technation – an organization with a 60-year history of facilitating career-ready programs; the innovative event drew more than 500 attendees and 35 corporate partners.
“We established Onyx on the simple premise that awareness and access are two of the most formidable barriers to Black youth and professionals getting their foot in the door and acquiring the necessary skills to advance into career-defining, life-changing roles,” said Wayne Purboo, Co-Founder, Onyx Initiative “Ensuring that our scholars have as much exclusive exposure as possible to the opportunities, the gatekeepers, and the decision makers will always be a major priority for our team.”
Amongst Onyx’s ongoing efforts to harness valuable resources that bolster current and future cohorts’ career preparation and longevity is the addition of Executive Fireside Chats with distinguished industry leaders like BlackNorth Founder and Dragons Den Dragon Wes Hall and TD’s Global Executive Officer, Cyber Security and CILAR Chair Claudette McGowan. The monthly chats, which began in September,
will feature a broad base of experienced speakers in a casual, virtual format. The organization’s previously announced 1:1 mentorship matching program, via Ten Thousand Coffees, which is still open for mentor applications (https://www.onyxinitiative.org/apply/mentor/) and the two Career Success coaches who regularly advise the scholars on a myriad of employment-related topics are also a part of this cohesive strategy.
“Our objective since inception has been to remain flexible; we understand that being open to integrated approaches that deliver the kind of comprehensive support that our scholars need is the best way to move our mission forward,” said Nigela. “We are truly fortunate to have so many like-minded allies for whom giving back a measure of what they have received is an integral part of their lives.”
Onyx’s launch in October 2020 was heralded as a significant, necessary endeavour and was accompanied by a full page feature in the Globe & Mail, and interviews on CTV’s Your Morning, CTV News Toronto, CP24, and BNN Bloomberg. This exposure and a robust outreach plan have been the catalyst for the innumerable requests the co-founders have received to participate on panels and deliver keynote speeches at events targeting audiences in sectors ranging from health care and research to higher education and technology.
“The continued interest in these timely and critical discussions is encouraging as it is indicative of the long-term commitment that companies, government officials, and academic institutions have made to stay the course,” said Wayne. “We are confident that with a sustained focus and dedication to true inclusivity and advancement, the cumulative effect of our efforts, in conjunction with our amazing partners, will be a corporate landscape that is more reflective of the diverse Canadian population that all businesses serve.”
Applications for the Onyx Scholars Program are accepted year-round. The selection process for the third cohort will begin in early 2022 with onboarding slated for the spring. For more information, please contact shane.malcolm@onyxinitiative.org.

Deloitte and AuditBoard Announce Strategic Alliance to Drive Greater Risk and Controls Compliance Efficiencies, Reduce Risk, and Extract More Value from SOX and Internal Audit Programs
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Deloitte & Touche LLP, a leader in providing audit, assurance and risk, and financial advisory services to public and private companies, and AuditBoard Inc., the innovative cloud-based platform for audit, risk, and compliance management, today announced a strategic alliance in conjunction with “Audit & Beyond 2021,” AuditBoard’s User Conference, taking place Oct. 19-21 at Terranea Resort in Los Angeles, California.
The alliance brings together AuditBoard’s cloud-based, integrated suite of audit, risk, and compliance solutions with Deloitte’s controls advisory and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and internal control over financial reporting professional advisory services to provide streamlined risk management, SOX compliance, internal audit, and controls management to clients.
The rapid and unprecedented pace of change — and lingering impact brought on by the pandemic — has raised concerns of increased regulation and compliance requirements. Emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and talent model shifts introduce new risks that need to be managed.
AuditBoard’s integrated audit, risk, and compliance solutions connect risk, and centralize and streamline SOX and internal audit workflow, testing, and reporting in a single platform, bringing together internal audit teams, IT compliance teams, external auditors, process owners, and executives to help enterprises automate, effectively manage, collaborate, and report on risk and control data in real time.
Deloitte works with organizations to help them modernize, automate, and ingrain financial governance from the executive board level and senior management level to the execution of transactions while still managing the total cost of compliance. Leveraging emerging technologies to help organizations shift the focus of their controls function from hindsight to foresight, Deloitte’s suite of tech-enabled services can help executives gain a better understanding of their current state of controls, spot trends, identify opportunities, and change behavior.
Few, if any, compliance requirements surpass the governance, risk and controls challenges presented to companies than those within the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Deloitte provides SOX-related services for any SOX program stage, from IPO and SPAC readiness to modernization and optimization of existing end-to-end SOX programs. For private companies planning an IPO or SPAC, Deloitte can assist with building a SOX readiness program that works for most organizations. For existing issuers, Deloitte can help organizations modernize their program through operating model transformation, process enhancement, and technology enablement. An optimized SOX program can deliver critical benefits, including enhanced quality, increased effectiveness and efficiency, deeper insights, and may reduce the total cost of compliance.
“This strategic alliance combines the power of our audit, risk, and compliance platform with Deloitte’s deep audit and advisory domain experience, providing extended value to our shared customers,” AuditBoard President and CEO Scott Arnold said. “We put our customers at the center of everything we do, and this exciting relationship is another example of how we’re working to elevate and empower them, in collaboration with one of the most respected names in the industry.”
“Internal controls compliance is more than just achieving the baseline. It should extract value,” said Lindsay Rosenfeld, managing director and Governance, Risk and Controls service offering leader within Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Accounting Advisory & Transformation Services practice. “Our professional services integrate with AuditBoard’s advanced audit, risk and compliance management technology to provide more effective and efficient solutions for our clients,” said Ashok Parmar, partner within Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Accounting Advisory & Transformation Services practice.

With an increasing number of startup projects supported by capital from Mainland China and successful landings in the GBA, we believe we can achieve greater synergy to facilitate the development of the GBA as an international technology and innovation hub.”
Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer, HKSTP, said: “HKSTP has always been dedicated to building a vibrant and competitive I&T ecosystem in Hong Kong and GBA by helping startups scale and access a host of resources including industry expertise, partner and investor networks, and R&D support. We are delighted to continue our partnership with Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund to support promising startups and inspire more young talent to begin their entrepreneurial journey through JUMPSTARTER 2022. Together, we will capture new opportunities emerging from GBA to accelerate the development of I&T for a brighter future.”
JUMPSTARTER 2022 is open to startups that have been operating for less than five years and plan to expand into Hong Kong or other cities in the GBA (see below appendix for more requirements).
Another highlight this year is the four online sharing sessions in early November that will target startups from cities in Mainland China, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asia. Successful startups and experts from a variety of industries will be invited to share their experiences during their entrepreneurial period, such as how to solve problems, the reasons for choosing Hong Kong or other cities in the GBA to develop business, analyze the business environment in the region, and the development opportunities of multiple emerging industries.
“Developments in the GBA offer unlimited opportunities, the economic scale is comparable to that of metropolitan areas such as New York, San Francisco and Tokyo, bringing huge development potential for startups. We have noticed the rising demand from startups to explore business and financing opportunities in the GBA. With the help of our partners, we hope to deliver more abundant online and offline resources and sharing activities, which support them to further explore the business environment for startups in these cities. Looking forward, AEF will continue to focus on achieving goals for participants, and encourage more institutions with the same vision to join us in nurturing startups,” Chow added.
Since its establishment, Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund has invested approximately USD80 million into 55 startups^, attracting co-investment funding of about USD2 billion to support these startups. Its investment portfolio covers a wide range of areas, including green technology, educational technology, fintech, medical and healthcare, logistics and e-commerce.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., Sept. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — StartUp Lehigh Valley, a pitch competition for area entrepreneurs developed and hosted by Factory LLC, with financial support from Penn State Lehigh Valley’s LaunchBox, is back for a third year.
After a virtual event in 2020, this year’s competition will be held live at Factory’s headquarters in south Bethlehem and broadcast live on WFMZ-TV 69News. The competition is scheduled for October 27, 2021, from 6:30-8:00 PM.
StartUp Lehigh Valley Entrepreneur Pitch Event Trailer
StartUp Lehigh Valley Entrepreneur Pitch Event Trailer
In a Shark Tank-style event designed to showcase startup companies in the Lehigh Valley community and throughout Pennsylvania, 10 finalists will pitch their products and businesses to a panel of judges in front of a live and virtual audience. Ten thousand dollars in prize money is up for grabs, along with essential resources for startup businesses.
“The StartUp Lehigh Valley pitch competition is designed to showcase the entrepreneurship that’s already happening in the Valley and get the community excited about supporting these local startups,” said Richard Thompson, managing partner at Factory. “We are thrilled to be partnering with WFMZ this year to broadcast the event live and reach more people than ever before. We also want to applaud Penn State Lehigh Valley’s LaunchBox for working with us to pull off this competition, and for providing vital resources to our local entrepreneurs year-round.
“We considered dozens of cities across the U.S. before building our innovation and scaleup facility, and we found exactly what we were looking for here in Bethlehem,” Thompson continued. “The Lehigh Valley has easy access to major airports and cities, a competitive talent pool, top-tier universities, and an exploding logistics industry. It’s perfectly poised to become a hotbed for innovation, and this competition is all about building that entrepreneurial community.”
The grand prize winner will take home $5,000. The first runner up will receive $2,500, and three additional finalists will receive LaunchBox Boost awards of $500 each. The live and virtual audience will also vote for the winner of a $1,000 Audience Choice award. Entrepreneurs have until October 15th to apply and can find all the details at startuplehighvalley.com.
The prize money is presented by lead sponsor Lehigh Valley LaunchBox, a hub of resources for entrepreneurs located at Penn State Lehigh Valley in Center Valley. All participants will have the opportunity to network at the event and are invited to take advantage of LaunchBox’s comprehensive startup services, including free legal counsel, access to grant funding, coaching, and more.
“From the first person to rub sticks together to start a fire to those who sparked the industrial age, innovation has lit our pathway to progress,” said Tina Q. Richardson, chancellor of Penn State Lehigh Valley. “But an idea, no matter how bright, is just an idea until an individual with talent, support – and gumption – captures, creates, packages, and successfully promotes it for profit: the entrepreneur. They are the backbone of our workforce, the root of all business and the reason we formed LaunchBox – to double down on our commitment to foster innovation in our region. We are so pleased to be part of this exciting event and look forward to helping these aspiring entrepreneurs gain exposure and traction through this partnership with Factory, and by connecting them to Penn State’s massive network of startup resources moving forward.”
JPMorgan Chase & Co. also contributed towards the cost of producing the event. The company is committed to supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses that create jobs and build vibrant communities.
“As our firm continues to grow in the Lehigh Valley, we couldn’t be prouder to support Factory’s StartUp event,” said Susan Youngs, relationship executive for JPMorgan Chase Commercial Banking. “JPMorgan Chase has a strong commitment to small businesses and entrepreneurs as they generate jobs, create diverse communities and are vital to prosperous cities. It’s our pleasure to help shine a spotlight on local entrepreneurs.”
Startup founders and entrepreneurs from any industry are welcome to apply to pitch. The only criteria are that participants must be 18 or older and based in Pennsylvania.
The pitch contest will be hosted by Thompson and Nancy Werteen, an anchor and reporter for WFMZ-TV. Each pitch will last for two minutes, followed by a round of questions from the judges.
This year’s panel of judges is comprised of local business leaders and innovators:
Sue Yee is the founder and CEO of Active Data, a digital products and services company focused on event commerce and online ticketing. She has also served on the boards of many area organizations, including the Lehigh Valley Health Network Board of Trustees and the PBS-WLTV 39 Board of Directors.
Dan Bosket is an entrepreneur and owner of several small businesses who also serves as a board member of the Allentown Chamber of Commerce, director of the Community Action Development Corporation of Allentown, and advisor for Lehigh Valley LaunchBox.
Tony Iannelli is CEO and president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. He hosts Business Matters, a local business show broadcast by WFMZ-TV featuring face-paced interviews on hot topics.
Roly Nesi is the founder of ROAR Organic, a refreshing electrolyte beverage enhanced with vitamins and antioxidants. He partnered with Factory and moved ROAR’s headquarters to Bethlehem in 2020.
The in-person audience is limited to 100, and those interested in attending must register in advance at startuplehighvalley.com. Audience members and finalists will be asked to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination.

Ernst & Young LLP launches first-of-its-kind EY Career Path Accelerator to help eliminate barriers to entry and increase the accounting profession’s talent diversity
NEW YORK, Aug. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Ernst & Young LLP (EY US) has launched the EY Career Path Accelerator, a first-of-its-kind program, providing an alternative path to meeting the 150-credit hour requirement for certified public accountant (CPA) licensure. The accessible and affordable program provides students with job-related learning and skills development to apply to their future careers in the accounting profession. The program is supporting nearly 60 EY US interns in its inaugural cohort.
In order to be eligible for CPA licensure, individuals must complete a total of 150-credit hours of education to sit for the CPA exam. The challenge is that many undergraduate programs typically include only 120-credit hours, leaving students to figure out how to complete the remaining requirements. Some choose to pursue master’s degrees and extend their education for up to a year, but others may have monetary constraints, lack of financial aid or need to enter the workforce as soon as possible.
The EY Career Path Accelerator is designed for students on track to become eligible for CPA licensure who are not pursuing a master’s degree. It provides a series of virtual courses administered by Hult International Business School and hands-on learning through the EY internship program, enabling participants to receive the guidance they need to be successful and equipping them with the future-focused skills and subject matter knowledge that they’ll need upon entering the workforce.
“While there are several different pathways for students to meet the requirements to be eligible for CPA licensure, time and financial resources can limit the choices or feasibility for a significant number of students, particularly those from marginalized or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Ginnie Carlier, EY Americas Vice Chair – Talent. “With this program we’re not only helping students jump-start their accounting careers earlier, but we also hope to attract the next generation of transformative leaders, while equipping them with relevant, future-focused skills and the mentorship necessary to succeed.”
The EY Career Path Accelerator provides students with accredited business and elective courses that can be applied to the 150-credit hour CPA licensure requirement. These additional credits such as data visualization, digital learning and others made available through the EY Career Path Accelerator can be earned on a schedule that is compatible with students’ work or family obligations.
As a leader in the accounting profession, EY US takes a strong interest in maintaining a vibrant and growing pool of transformative leaders. But even as demand for CPAs continues to grow, data from the most recent AICPA Trends Report 20191 shows the number of CPA exam candidates decreased by 7% between 2017 and 2018.
“We believe that addressing barriers to equity and inclusion enhances our ability – as a firm and as a profession – to attract and to grow the next generation of CPAs. This program is one step toward improving diverse representation across the EY organization and within the field of accounting,” added John King, EY Americas Vice Chair – Assurance.
The Ernst & Young Foundation has provided more than $100,000 in need-based financial aid to 75% of the inaugural EY Career Path Accelerator cohort.
Additional program benefits and resources include EY academic counselors to support students throughout the program, opportunities for students to engage in a learning pod community with an EY professional, portable credentials with no obligations or commitments to EY US and integrated learning incorporating targeted skills in business, technology and leadership.

The national jobs index uses a 12-month same-store methodology to gauge small business employment trends on a national, regional, state, metro, and industry basis.
The complete results for July, including interactive charts detailing all data, are available at www.paychex.com/watch. Highlights are available below.
National Jobs Index
The 0.85 percent jump in July matches the rapid growth seen in the overall economy and is the second strongest one-month increase since recovering from the Great Recession in 2010.
At 99.36, the Small Business Jobs Index is up more than one percent during the past quarter and five percent from last year, both strong signs of continuing recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
The national index gained 1.04 percent during the past quarter, improving to 99.36.
National Wage Report
Hourly earnings growth improved to 3.11 percent in July, marking the first month above three percent since last August.
Weekly hours worked growth slowed for the fourth consecutive month, from 0.52 percent in March to -0.58 percent in July.
Weekly earnings growth increased to 2.45 percent in July, up from a two-year low of 2.34 percent in June.
Regional Jobs Index
All regions improved in July, with the West region leading gains at 1.07 percent and the Midwest trailing at 0.46 percent.
The South improved 0.96 percent in July. Its index (100.38) leads regions and topped 100 for the first time since May 2018.
The Northeast is up 5.60 percent from the previous year – the best among all regions. Note: The larger recovery is due to a weaker base level in 2020 caused by the early state shutdowns in the region.
Note: Percentages displayed in the regional heat map reflect 12-month changes.
Regional Wage Report
The West has the highest hourly earnings rate and growth among regions, at $31.14 and 3.49 percent, respectively. The lower the hourly earnings rate, the weaker the growth is compared across all regions.
Weekly earnings growth in the Northeast stands at 2.26 percent in July, nearly one percent lower than hourly earnings growth as weekly hours worked are down year-over-year.
Note: Percentages displayed in the regional heat map reflect 12-month changes.
State Jobs Index
Arizona is the new leader in small business job growth among states at 101.72, slightly edging Texas at 101.64.
Following Arizona and Texas, east coast states North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida round out the top five with indexes around 101.
Washington no longer has the lowest levels of small business job growth among states. Employment growth in the state increased by 2.25 percent in July.
Note: Analysis is provided for the 20 largest states based on U.S. population.
State Wage Report
Missouri ranks first among states for hourly earnings growth for the third consecutive month, at 4.00 percent in July.
Texas ranks first among states in average weekly hours worked (34.10 hours) and year-over-year growth (0.83 percent).
California reported 3.95 percent weekly earnings growth in July, best among states, with one-month and three-month annualized rates above four percent.
Note: Analysis is provided for the 20 largest states based on U.S. population.
Metropolitan Jobs Index
Tampa and Dallas lead metros in small business employment growth, each with indexes above 102.
Since historical reporting began in 2004, the Washington, D.C. index (96.98) ranks lowest among metros.
Atlanta had the second strongest gain in July, increasing 2.28 percent to fourth place among metros at 101.08.
Denver was the only metro index to slow in July, falling 0.47 percent to 98.70.
Note: Analysis is provided for the 20 largest metro areas based on U.S. population.
Metropolitan Wage Report
Los Angeles, and inland neighbor Riverside, top the metros for hourly earnings growth, are both above four percent.
Denver is the only other metro with hourly earnings growth of over four percent.
Baltimore is the only metro with hourly earnings growth below one percent in July.
Boston ranks fourth among metros in hourly earnings growth (3.90 percent), but is 12th in weekly earnings growth (2.79 percent) as weekly hours worked are down nearly five percent during the past quarter on an annualized basis.
Note: Analysis is provided for the 20 largest metro areas based on U.S. population.
Industry Jobs Index
The pace of small business employment growth improved in all sectors in July.
Leisure and hospitality gained 1.91 percent from the previous month, growing its index to 100.31. While the rate of small business job growth is currently far faster than prior to the pandemic, the sector remains critically underemployed.
The construction index (98.40) ranks second to last among sectors and has slowed 2.30 percent during the past quarter. Professional and business services (97.95) are the only sector with a weaker small business employment growth rate.
Note: Analysis is provided for seven major industry sectors. Definitions of each industry sector can be found here. The other services (except public administration) industry category includes religious, civic, and social organizations, as well as personal services, including automotive and household repair, salons, drycleaners, and other businesses. The chart’s dark blue bars reflect the index level and the light blue diamonds reflect the 12-month change.
Industry Wage Report
Leisure and hospitality continue to outperform all other sectors in both earnings and hours worked growth, ranking first in each month since April. Weekly earnings growth is up double digits for the second-straight month.
Except for leisure and hospitality, all sectors have negative weekly hours worked growth year-over-year.
Note: Analysis is provided for seven major industry sectors. Definitions of each industry sector can be found here. The other services (except public administration) industry category includes religious, civic, and social organizations, as well as personal services, including automotive and household repair, salons, drycleaners, and other businesses.

Jobs Report: Nearly 5 Million New Jobs Posted in Last 30 Days, 1 Million in Last Week Alone
TACOMA, Wash. — With explosive job growth continuing across the U.S., a new analysis being released today by staffing firm PeopleReady finds that nearly five million jobs have been posted in the last month, including roughly one million in just the past seven days. In addition, PeopleReady is releasing a list of some of those jobs seeing the most growth—and says many of the jobs coming back fastest will benefit those who had a tough time finding work during the past year.
“A booming job market is welcome and needed after the last year of job loss and employment uncertainty for many people. While the sudden surge of jobs is creating worker supply challenges, the good news is that many job areas seeing the highest demand are creating opportunities for those workers negatively impacted at the height of the pandemic,” said Taryn Owen, president of PeopleReady. “Right now, we’re seeing both people and businesses needing help navigating what is a new job climate. As we move back to business as usual, connecting people and work has never been more crucial.”
According to the PeopleReady analysis of millions of jobs, some of the fastest-growing jobs in the past 30 days include:
Food and beverage attendants, including waiters, saw job postings rise 365%.
Catering service workers had a 259% increase.
Stockroom associates had a 226% increase.
Personal grocery shoppers jumped 146%.
Line cooks rose 133%.
Delivery drivers are up 100%.
Warehouse associate jobs are also up 100%.
Those who work with PeopleReady in the U.S. during the month of July will be automatically entered into the staffing firm’s Work, Win, Drive sweepstakes, with drawings to win over $100,000 in cash and prizes—including a grand prize drawing for a new Honda Civic similar to the one two-time Indy 500 champ Takuma Sato drove in PeopleReady’s Ride to Work commercial. For more information on the sweepstakes, people can visit peopleready.com/WorkWinDrive.
To connect job seekers with available jobs across many different industries, PeopleReady is holding nationwide hiring events this week. The staffing company has a variety of ways for job seekers to access job opportunities: via app (JobStack) and online (jobs.peopleready.com).

TUEX Working with JABC to Bring New Entrepreneurial Opportunities to Youth in British Columbia
VANCOUVER, BC — The TUEX Foundation is working alongside JA British Columbia to create a Build Your Own Business contest for local schools in British Columbia.
This contest will encourage students to tune into their entrepreneurial spirit and turn their small ideas into big opportunities. With the help from various JABC sponsors and the TUEX Foundation, the contest will be fully funded and the students will have access to resources that will help them build their business ideas. These resources include classes to help understand finances, expert advice from professionals, and avenues to help create prototypes.
Alfred Chien, Co-Founder and CEO of TUEX Education, can’t wait to get the contest started, “We are excited about this initiative with JABC and hope to run multiple contests throughout every school semester for years to come. Students have always had great business ideas, but most don’t have the means to pursue them. Through these contests, we hope to jumpstart the careers of future entrepreneurs with the help and resources they need.”
The plan is to recruit sponsors from now until the end of July, then run the first contest in August before the new school year begins.

U.S. Job Gains Surge to 850,000 as Businesses Work to Fill Record Number of Open Roles and Capitalize on Revenue Opportunities
DALLAS, July 2, 2021 — ThinkWhy, a Dallas-based SaaS company focused on creating a new generation of AI-driven labor market solutions, released its national jobs report and labor forecast for June. The report follows an announcement today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the economy added 850,000 jobs in June, with the unemployment rate at 5.9%. ThinkWhy’s June Report reveals that Los Angeles, New York and Minneapolis metros post most jobs added in first half of 2021 while leisure-hospitality and government sectors show strongest gains in June.

ThinkWhy June Jobs Report shows Surge to 850,000 as Businesses Work to Fill Record Number of Open Roles and Capitalize on Revenue Opportunities
U.S. Job Gains Surge to 850,000 as Businesses Work to Fill Record Number of Open Roles
With 9.3 million jobs open, employers have been scrambling to attract talent since the second quarter began, while trying to seize new revenue and growth opportunities as America’s economy reopens post-COVID. Job creation in April and May at 269,000 and 583,000, respectively, failed to meet economists’ expectations, though the labor market has kicked into higher gear in June. The question is, will the momentum continue?
ThinkWhy’s talent intelligence software, LaborIQ®, reports, forecasts and advises on employment conditions and the impact to jobs, industries and businesses across all U.S. cities. Leveraging 18 trillion data points validated against more than 8.6 million U.S. pay stubs, LaborIQ provides market-driven compensation answers. The multi-tiered data intake process verifies and delivers precise salary recommendations, talent supply and forecasts for more than 20,000 job titles.
“The acceleration in job gain suggests the supply of talent is starting to loosen, but with hiring managers facing a record number of job openings to fill, it’s simply not enough. The labor market will remain tight in the near-term as remote work demand adds complexity to the talent acquisition process,” said Jay Denton, chief analyst for ThinkWhy. “As companies go back to the office, whether full-time or not, a period of disruption will exist as we shift back to previous work norms.”
Numbers recently released by the U.S. Commerce Department show business investment in nondefense capital goods are at an all-time high and consumers are shifting spending back to in-person activities, such as dining and travel. Home price growth remains extremely strong, and the economy is showing widespread, sustainable growth.
The Outlook for Job Recovery
LaborIQ projects a significant acceleration of job growth in the second half of 2021. May and June employment gains suggest talent acquisition professionals will have their work cut out for them as business progresses through the remainder of 2021, a year in which upwards of 73 million hires could take place.
With news headlines focused on the potential rise of the COVID delta variant, the near-term outlook could become cloudier if another spike in virus cases occurs. Overall, the job market is expected to remain strong, especially if more workers rejoin the labor force over the summer months.
“June was the start of a very busy hiring season. With additional unemployment benefits ending in half the states, and business investment and consumer demand through the roof, job gains will remain strong,” noted Denton. “A lack of talent supply, along with any potential disruption from the Delta variant of the coronavirus, will be the biggest obstacle ahead.”
It has been two years since most people were able to take a true summer vacation, and travel has picked up quickly in recent months. As workers take extended time off this season, another hiring slowdown may occur. Whether it is hiring managers, talent acquisition professionals, candidates or others involved in the hiring process, anticipate a lot of out-of-office replies as we get back to a semblance of normalcy.
Top Metropolitan Areas for Job Market Gains
As the nation marches toward a full job recovery in 2023, the losses experienced during the pandemic and rebound have been uneven across geographies. From a pure volume perspective, the following metro areas added the most jobs back to the labor market, in the first five months of 2021. Of note, many of these labor markets were among the hardest hit by the pandemic.
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA (165,000)
New York-Newark-New Jersey, NY-NJ-PA (131,400)
Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI (62,500)
Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, MA-NH NECTA (57,800)
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland, TX (53,100)
Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI (52,700)
San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA (50,500)
Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD (45,600)
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV (45,300)
Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO (44,400)
Industry Recovery Outlook
U.S. industries have been impacted differently by the pandemic and thus, recovery will be uneven across sectors based on varying economic influence. As a result, each city will be impacted differently. Talent acquisition professionals must understand the economic drivers that impact the ability to ramp up hiring and business development.
The service-based economy is bouncing back. Consumer demand and business investment have swelled — signs of improved job prospects and employment growth opportunities. This is good news for Leisure and Hospitality, which was anemic for much of the past year.
LaborIQ expects to see pre-pandemic employment levels return unevenly across the major sectors, extending past 2025.

About the ADP® National Employment Report™
The ADP® National Employment Report™ is a monthly measure of the change in total U.S. nonfarm private employment derived from actual, anonymous payroll data of client companies served by ADP®, a leading provider of human capital management solutions. The report, which measures nearly 26 million U.S. workers, is produced by the ADP Research Institute®, a specialized group within the company that provides insights around employment trends and workforce strategy, in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics, Inc.
Each month, ADP Research Institute issues the ADP National Employment Report as part of the company’s commitment to adding deeper insights into the U.S. labor market and providing businesses, governments and others with a source of credible and valuable information. The ADP National Employment Report is broadly distributed to the public each month, free of charge.
The data for this report is collected for pay periods that can be interpolated to include the week of the 12th of each month, and processed with statistical methodologies similar to those used by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to compute employment from its monthly survey of establishments. Due to this processing, this subset is modified to make it indicative of national employment levels; therefore, the resulting employment changes computed for the ADP National Employment Report are not representative of changes in ADP’s total base of U.S. business clients.
For a description of the underlying data and the statistical model used to create this report, please see the ADP National Employment Report: Development Methodology.

Essential Administrative Tasks to Keep Your Business Running Smoothly – James Hall
Every entrepreneur hates spending valuable time plugging away at administrative tasks. While you didn’t start a business for the tedious day-to-day work, those frustrating tasks are necessary for keeping your company afloat. The good news is that you can delegate, outsource, and automate nearly every administrative task that’s stealing your time away from the projects you’re passionate about. As a bonus, you’ll gain access to expertise and efficiency upgrades that can help your business run even better!
Many small business owners struggle with financial planning. In fact, cash flow issues are the number one reason small businesses fail!
Cibunet shares some other actionable tips to help you streamline those administrative burdens.
Employee Payroll
Paying employees can eat up a lot of your time, especially if your team members work different hours. A solid payroll process will ensure your employees always get paid the correct amount on time, and can also help you avoid violating labor laws. Take advantage of efficient payroll tools like the QuickBooks timesheet calculator so you can start time card tracking like a BOSS. Just remember to include overtime and breaks to ensure employee wages comply with labor laws. Failure to pay overtime can result in a costly labor lawsuit!
Cash Flow Considerations
Good cash flow management will ensure you always have cash on hand to pay your employees—and all those other expenses. Monitoring cash flow is vital to the success of your business. Even if you’re making sales and reporting revenue, your business can go under if you don’t have the cash to pay your bills. If business financials aren’t your strong suit, consider outsourcing your cash flow management to a professional accountant. A great accountant will help you with cash flow reporting, financial risk management, budgeting, and cash flow forecasting so you can stay on top of your business’s financial position.
Managing Invoices
Staying on top of client invoices is essential for maintaining positive cash flow. Without an efficient invoicing process, it can take a very long time for your business to receive money from customers. Implement invoicing strategies to ensure you get paid as fast as possible! For example, you can use automated invoicing tools to schedule payment reminders for customers and enable automatic payments for recurring invoices.
If you have a lot of cash tied up in unpaid invoices, invoice factoring can help you access working capital to pay your bills. Invoice factoring involves selling your accounts receivable to a factoring company that will assume the role of collecting unpaid invoices from your customers.
Inventory Management
Good inventory management is another important element in maintaining positive cash flow. While inventory has the power to generate cash flow, overstocking inventory that exceeds customer demand will tie up your cash in unsellable stock. On the other hand, understocking will leave your business short on sellable items, also hurting your potential cash flow. This is another area that can benefit from automation. Take advantage of inventory management software that will offer accurate inventory tracking and forecasting so you can avoid creating cash flow issues.
Customer Support
Handling customer inquiries and support tickets is an incredibly important administrative task and one that has the potential to become a huge time sink. To streamline customer support, Talkroute suggests using support ticket software to organize inquiries and delegate tasks to team members. Encourage your customers to find solutions on their own before reaching out for support. A library of user-friendly resources and FAQs can help cut down on customer inquiries and free up your time for more complex customer issues.
As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get lost in your long-term goals. Dreaming about the future of your business is a great way to stay motivated! But don’t neglect the small day-to-day details that keep your business running smoothly. While no one likes administrative tasks, these tedious responsibilities are vital to your long-term success!
